His surgical gown had been removed, but one paper wristband remained around his arm from the operating suite. There was a smear of dried blood near his cuff. I did not know whether it belonged to Rosie or whether I wanted to know.

“Cathy, I need you to hear all of it before you decide what you think.”

“Just tell me.”

He leaned against the wall.

“When your dad got sick.”

I frowned. “Dad wasn’t sick.”

“Not where you could see it.”

The words stopped me.

Ben watched my face carefully.

“This was about four years before Rosie and I got married. He called me one afternoon and asked me to come over without telling you or Rosie. I thought something had happened with the house.”

I remembered that period vaguely. Dad had been more tired than usual. Mom said work was wearing him down. There had been appointments he called routine.

Ben continued.

“He told me he’d been diagnosed with a heart condition. Serious enough that he didn’t know what the next decade looked like.”

My mouth went dry.

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

“He didn’t want either of you living around it.”

“That’s not his decision.”

“I know.”

“Did Mom know?”

“Yes.”

The answer landed hard.

Of course she had.

I pictured all those dinners, holidays, phone calls. My parents had carried that secret together while I complained about work deadlines and traffic and whether Daniel was ever going to replace the kitchen faucet properly.

“How serious?”

“Serious enough that he started planning for what happened if he died before Rosie had a stable adult life.”

I understood where the conversation was going before Ben reached it.

“No.”

“Cathy—”

“No. Tell me he didn’t ask you to marry her.”

“He didn’t.”

The certainty in Ben’s voice stopped me.

I searched his face.

“Then what did he ask?”

“He asked whether I’d agree to become one of Rosie’s legal support people if he and your mom couldn’t do it anymore.”

Some of the pressure in my chest released, but not much.

“Support person?”

“Not guardian. Not unless something changed and that became necessary. Mostly financial oversight, medical advocacy if she wanted help, making sure nobody pressured her into signing things she didn’t understand. That kind of thing.”

I thought of Dad’s study. The folder.

“The documents.”

Ben nodded.

“That’s what we were discussing before the wedding.”

“Why you?”

“Because he trusted me.”

A humorless laugh escaped me. “He had a daughter.”

“I told him that.”

I looked at him sharply.

Ben folded his arms. “The first thing I asked was why he wasn’t talking to you.”

“And?”

“He said he would. Eventually. But he worried you’d feel responsible for Rosie’s entire life.”

That sounded painfully like Dad.

“He thought I couldn’t handle it?”

“No. The opposite.”

Ben looked toward the corridor, then back at me.

“He said you’d handle everything. Work, money, appointments, emergencies, loneliness, all of it. And then one day you’d wake up and realize you had built your whole life around keeping Rosie safe.”

I wanted to reject the idea.

I couldn’t.

When we were younger, I had assumed that if something happened to our parents, Rosie would live with me. I had never discussed it with anyone. It simply existed in my head as fact.

Ben must have seen the recognition on my face.

“Your dad knew.”

I sat on the window ledge.

“So he recruited you.”

“He asked me to share responsibility.”

“And you agreed.”

“Eventually.”

“What does eventually mean?”

“It means I told him he was acting like Rosie was still twelve.”

That surprised me.

Ben’s mouth tightened.

“We argued. I told him Rosie deserved to know people were making plans about her future. I told him she should have a say in who helped manage anything. Your dad agreed in principle and then kept delaying the conversation.”

“That also sounds like him.”

“Yes.”

I looked down at my hands.

“But that still doesn’t explain what you meant.”

Ben did not pretend otherwise.

“No.”

He reached into his jacket again.

This time he pulled out an envelope.

Rosie’s handwriting was on the front.

CATHY.

The letters were large and uneven.

My stomach turned.

“When did she write that?”

“Two weeks ago.”

“Why?”

“Because she was scared.”

“She didn’t tell me.”

“She didn’t want you scared too.”

That was so like Rosie that it hurt.

I reached for the envelope.

Ben held it a moment longer.

“She asked me to give you this only if something went badly.”

I took it but did not open it.

“Tell me the rest first.”

He exhaled.

“After your dad asked me to help with Rosie’s future, I started spending more time thinking about what her life might actually look like. Not what everyone assumed. What she wanted.”

I waited.

“One night we went for coffee. You were out of town. Rosie told me she was tired of everybody planning around her.”

I could hear her saying it.

“She said people were always deciding what she’d need, where she’d live, what work she could do. She said nobody asked what she wanted first.”

My eyes lowered.

I had done that too.

Probably more times than I could count.

Ben continued.

“So I asked her.”

“What did she say?”

“A house. A job she liked. Maybe a dog. A husband if she met somebody who loved her. Children if it was possible.”

He gave a faint smile.

“And blue curtains.”

Despite everything, I almost laughed.

“Those horrible curtains.”

“Exactly.”

Then the smile disappeared.

“That conversation changed something for me.”

I felt myself becoming very still.

“I had always cared about Rosie. You know that.”

“Yes.”

“But I had spent years thinking of caring for her as something separate from the rest of my life. Then I realized I was already measuring my future against whether she was in it.”

I said nothing.

“Not because of your dad.”

He looked directly at me.

“Because when I pictured moving somewhere else, I wondered how often I’d see her. When I dated other people, I noticed how they treated her. When something good happened, she was one of the first people I wanted to tell.”

My throat tightened.

Ben looked embarrassed by his own honesty.

“At first I thought it was loyalty. Then I thought it was habit.”

“And then?”

“Then Rosie went on a date with somebody else.”

I blinked.

“What?”

“You didn’t know?”

“No.”

“She was twenty-four. A guy from her work program asked her to dinner.”

“Michael?”

Ben nodded.

I remembered Michael vaguely. Tall, cheerful, obsessed with trains.

“What happened?”

“Nothing bad. Dinner went fine.”

“Then what?”

“I hated it.”

This time I did laugh, softly and involuntarily.

Ben almost smiled.

“I sat in my car outside my apartment feeling angry at a guy who had done absolutely nothing wrong.”

“Jealous?”

“Completely.”

“So that’s when you knew.”

“That’s when I stopped lying to myself.”

The machinery behind the operating-room doors seemed louder suddenly.

I looked at the envelope in my hands.

“And Dad?”

“Your dad didn’t know any of that when he first talked to me.”

“But eventually?”

“Eventually I told him I was thinking about asking Rosie out.”

I could already imagine the conversation.

“What did he say?”

“He stared at me for about thirty seconds and asked whether I understood the difference between loving someone and feeling responsible for them.”

My eyes burned.

That was exactly the question I had asked myself for years.

“What did you tell him?”

“That I wasn’t sure yet.”

Ben’s honesty struck me harder than some perfect romantic answer would have.

“So you waited.”

“Almost a year.”

I remembered that year. Ben taking Rosie for coffee. Ben showing up at the garden center. Ben and Rosie laughing in corners I had never paid attention to.

“Did she know?”

“Eventually.”

“Who asked who out?”

“She did.”

That startled another small laugh from me.

“Of course she did.”

“She told me I was taking too long.”

That was also completely Rosie.

I looked down again.

“So when you proposed…”

“I proposed because I wanted to marry her.”

“Not because Dad asked.”

“No.”

“Not because you promised at prom.”

“No.”

“Not because you felt sorry for her.”

Ben’s expression hardened.

“Never.”

The answer came so quickly that shame moved through me.

He softened when he saw it.

“Cathy, I know people wonder.”

“I wondered.”

“I know.”

“For years.”

“I know that too.”

My head lifted.

“How?”

“Because you watched me like I was under investigation for the first year of our marriage.”

Despite the fear hanging over us, I covered my face.

“Oh God.”

“It was subtle.”

“No, apparently it wasn’t.”

“Not really.”

I let my hands fall.

“Why didn’t you say something?”

“Because you were trying to protect her.”

“From you.”

“From anybody who might hurt her.”

He sat beside me on the ledge.

“I never hated you for it.”

We were silent for several seconds.

Then the most important question returned.

“Why did Rosie want me told now?”

Ben’s face changed.

“Because there’s another part.”

Of course there was.

I gripped the envelope.

“What?”

“After we got married, your dad revised his estate plan.”

“Okay.”

“He set up a trust for Rosie.”

“That makes sense.”

“Yes.”

Ben hesitated.

“And he made you the primary trustee.”

I stared at him.

“Me?”

“He always intended to.”

“But you said—”

“He wanted me involved as support. He never wanted me controlling her money.”

A strange relief moved through me.

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

“He planned to. Then his health improved, everybody got busy, and he kept postponing it.”

I shook my head.

“Unbelievable.”

“Rosie knew about the trust.”

That stopped me.

“Rosie knew?”

“We made sure she did.”

A small, painful realization followed.

Rosie had been included in decisions I had assumed others made for her.

Perhaps I was the one who had remained outside.

Ben continued.

“Your dad told her the trust was there to protect her, not control her. She chose you as trustee.”

I swallowed.

“She chose me?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Ben gave me a tired look.

“You really have to ask?”

Before I could answer, running footsteps sounded in the corridor.

A nurse appeared.

“Mr. Mercer?”

Ben stood instantly.

The color drained from his face.

The nurse approached quickly.

“The surgeon needs to speak with you.”

“Is she alive?”

The question came out raw.

The nurse paused.

“Yes.”

Ben’s knees nearly buckled.

“But she’s still critical,” the nurse added. “The bleeding has been controlled for now. She’s being moved to intensive care.”

I closed my eyes.

Alive.

The word moved through me like warmth returning to a frozen limb.

Ben pressed his fist against his mouth.

The nurse continued.

“The next several hours are important.”

“What about the babies?”

“Both remain in neonatal intensive care. They’re stable at the moment.”

Ben nodded repeatedly.

“Can I see Rosie?”

“Briefly, once she’s settled.”

He looked at me.

I held up the envelope.

“Go.”

He hesitated.

“Read it.”

I nodded.

Ben followed the nurse.

I remained beside the window.

For several minutes I simply stared at Rosie’s name on the envelope.

Then I opened it.

Inside was one sheet of paper.

The first sentence made my chest tighten.

Cathy, please do not be mad at Ben because he loves me.

I pressed my lips together.

The second sentence was harder.

And please stop thinking everybody has to save me.

I read those words three times.

Rosie had seen me more clearly than I had seen myself.

Her letter continued in simple, direct language.

She wrote that Ben had told her everything about Dad’s early request before they ever began dating. She had known about the trust. She had known that our parents worried about her future.

She had also known about me.

I reached the middle of the page.

I know you think you are my big sister so you have to fix things. But sometimes you fix things I didn’t ask you to fix.

A tear fell onto the paper.

I wiped it away immediately.

She wrote about the babies.

She wrote that she was afraid something might happen during delivery.

She wrote that if she died, she wanted Ben to raise their children.

That should have been obvious.

Then I reached the line that changed everything.

But if Ben cannot do it alone, I want you with him. Not instead of him. With him.

I stopped breathing.

Below that, Rosie had added one final paragraph.

Dad made plans because he was scared. You make plans because you are scared too. I don’t want my babies growing up scared of losing people.
