He checked the alley from the back door, waited until no headlights moved across the wet pavement, then motioned for Noah and me to follow. Every instinct told me to call the police and remain where we were. Samuel argued that whoever had taken Leah had entered a house while four people stood only yards away. Until we understood how, staying still made us easier to find.

I sent Detective Rivera a short message anyway. Leah had been taken. We were moving. I would contact her again when I could do so safely. I did not tell her where Samuel was taking us because I did not know.

Rain soaked my hair before we reached the end of the alley. Noah kept glancing behind us. Samuel moved quickly but without running, taking narrow side streets instead of the main road until we reached a block of old commercial buildings.

He stopped beside a workshop that looked abandoned.

Plywood covered two windows. A metal sign above the entrance hung by one rusted chain. Weeds had pushed through cracks in the loading area.

“This is your safe place?” Noah asked.

“It was Michael’s.”

I looked sharply at Samuel.

“He owned it?”

“Through someone else.”

Of course he did. By then nothing in Michael’s second life seemed to exist under its obvious name.

Samuel unlocked a side door. Dust and old machine oil hung in the air. Behind the main workshop, he opened a narrow storage room containing metal cabinets, file boxes, a folding table, and several objects that looked as though nobody had touched them in years.

A framed photograph sat on one shelf.

Michael and I were children in it. He was eleven, perhaps twelve, grinning without one front tooth while I stood beside him holding a fishing pole almost twice my height.

I ran my thumb along the dusty glass.

“He kept this here?”

Samuel nodded.

The tenderness of the object made me angrier than another document would have. Michael had kept a photograph of me while allowing me to believe he no longer existed.

Noah opened a box before I could stop him. Inside lay a thick ledger with worn corners. Samuel crossed the room immediately.

“That’s what Michael wanted protected.”

He set it on the folding table and opened it.

Numbers filled the pages in compact handwriting. There were dates, addresses, company names, initials, payment amounts, and marks whose meaning we could not immediately understand. Some names were strangers.

Others were not.

Daniel.

Lydia.

Samuel.

Then Noah touched a line with his finger.

“Leah.”

I leaned over him.

My sister’s name appeared beside a date from twelve years earlier.

I turned toward Samuel. “You knew she was involved?”

“No.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

His expression sharpened. “If I knew what that entry meant, I would tell you.”

The page contained another familiar name several lines below.

Mine.

Beside it Michael had written one word.

Protected.

I stared at the letters until they blurred. Samuel suggested the ledger might distinguish members of the network from people under threat, but the marks were inconsistent. Leah’s entry could mean anything—contact, witness, payment, warning.

That uncertainty was almost worse.

A radio on the shelf crackled.

Samuel froze.

He had not touched it.

A voice came through, distorted and low.

“Samuel.”

Noah and I exchanged a look.

Samuel picked up the radio. “Where is Leah?”

Silence.

Then the voice answered that she was alive.

I grabbed the radio from Samuel. “Let me hear her.”

The stranger refused.

“Then I don’t believe you.”

For several seconds there was only static.

Then my sister’s voice came faintly through the speaker.

“Claire?”

My knees nearly gave way.

“Leah. Are you hurt?”

“I’m okay.”

“Where are you?”

“I don’t know.”

Her breathing sounded quick. Somewhere behind her came a metallic scrape.

“Leah, listen to me—”

The other voice returned and cut her off.

We had one hour.

The price was the ledger.

Samuel shook his head hard enough for me to see it in the dim room.

The voice instructed me to come alone.

Then the radio died.

I rounded on Samuel. “I’m taking it.”

“No.”

“She’s my sister.”

“And they may kill both of you the moment you arrive.”

“They may kill her if I don’t.”

“They took Leah because they need something. That gives her value while we still have it.”

I hated him for making sense.

Noah crouched beside the radio. “Was this always here?”

Samuel looked at it.

“No.”

He turned it over. Fresh scratches marked the base. Someone had entered Michael’s hidden workshop before us and planted the radio knowing we would eventually find the ledger.

The safe place had never been safe.

We left within minutes.

Samuel drove us to an aging motel beyond the edge of town. The room smelled of old smoke covered with industrial cleaner. One lamp buzzed near the bed. It was the sort of place where nobody asked questions because nobody wanted questions asked about them.

We spread the ledger and copied documents over the blanket.

“If they’re willing to take Leah for this,” Noah said, “there has to be something specific inside.”

He was right.

For nearly an hour we searched page after page. The entries looked chaotic until Noah realized they were not arranged by time.

“They’re grouped by address.”

He turned several pages back.

There was our house.

Under the address were four names.

Daniel.

Lydia.

Samuel.

And my father.

I looked at Samuel. “Why are you listed?”

“Michael questioned everyone who touched the property history. Some of those names are investigators. Some are participants.”

“Which were you?”

“Both, at different times.”

At least he did not pretend otherwise.

The deeper we read, the stranger the ownership became. My father had not been listed as the ordinary owner I remembered from family paperwork. His name appeared as trustee for an old property company dissolved years earlier.

“What company?”

Samuel showed me incorporation records among Michael’s files. The organization had once held several parcels, including the land beneath my home. When it dissolved, some assets were never properly distributed.

“Our house was one of them?”

“Yes.”

“But my parents bought it.”

Samuel was silent long enough that I already knew I would dislike the answer.

“They occupied it. They maintained it. Your father controlled it as trustee. But the underlying land was never transferred to them the way you were told.”

The motel suddenly felt too small.

“Then who owned it?”

Samuel pointed to another notation.

Held for Michael Carter.

Noah stared at me.

“My uncle owned Mom’s house?”

“Not exactly,” Samuel said.

Michael had apparently discovered that the property’s original structure gave members of our family continuing legal interests through my father’s estate. Someone had been attempting to erase those interests through fraudulent transfers.

Daniel was part of that effort.

The insurance scheme had therefore been only one layer. If Noah and I disappeared, Daniel could use the confusion surrounding the estate to pressure remaining claimants and complete transfers that had stalled for years.

“Remaining claimants,” Noah repeated. “Meaning us.”

“And others.”

“Who?”

Samuel turned another page.

My father’s estate.

I told him the estate had been closed after my father died.

“On paper,” he said.

A sound came from the radio.

We had brought it with us after Samuel removed what he believed was the transmitter. Instead of the kidnapper, Michael’s voice played.

It was another prepared recording.

He warned me not to believe anyone claiming Daniel rightfully owned the house. The person responsible for arranging the earliest questionable property transfer was still alive.

Then Michael said a name.

Margaret.

For several seconds I could not connect the name in the recording to the woman in my life.

Aunt Margaret.

My father’s younger sister.

The woman who helped raise me after my mother died.

The woman who brought food when Michael disappeared because I had stopped cooking for myself.

“No,” I said.

Samuel’s face told me he had suspected this.

“You knew.”

“I knew Michael had questions about her.”

“That isn’t what I asked.”

“I did not know what she had done.”

I stood beside the bed, furious at a dead recorder. Michael’s voice returned for one final sentence.

Margaret knew where he was.

The recording clicked off.

Noah sat absolutely still.

“Aunt Margaret knows he’s alive?”

Apparently she had always known more than I did.

Before we could decide what to do, the motel telephone rang.

None of us moved on the first ring.

Samuel answered the second without speaking.

A woman said my name.

I recognized her voice instantly.

“Margaret.”

“You found Michael’s records,” she said.

It was not a question.

I gripped the receiver. “Where is Leah?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where is Michael?”

A pause.

“Closer than you think.”

My throat tightened. “What do you want?”

“You have something that belongs to me.”

“The ledger?”

“No.”

Her voice softened, almost sadly.

“You have the truth, Claire.”

The line disconnected.

I remained holding the receiver after the dial tone began.

Noah asked what she had said.

I placed the phone down carefully.

“My family has been keeping the same secret for twelve years.”

Samuel closed the ledger.

“What are you going to do?”

I thought of Michael’s photograph in the workshop, Leah’s frightened voice over the radio, my father’s name under our property address, and Margaret waiting somewhere while the rest of us stumbled through pieces she already understood.

“We’re going to her house.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: Margaret Finally Told Me What My Father Had Protected, and a Photograph Rewrote the Beginning of My Marriage

Samuel refused to let us leave through the front.
