letter.

A real letter.

Handwritten.

I almost didn't open it.

Inside, he described the family as it had been before the galas became elaborate.

He remembered small dinners.

Paper plates.

My mother cooking too much food.

All of us fighting over the last piece of pie.

He wrote that somewhere along the way, they simply said he was sorry.

I read the letter twice.

Then I placed it in a drawer.

I wasn't ready to answer.

Months passed.

My business grew.

I hired two new employees.

We moved into a larger office.

I took on a major charity event that raised far more money than the Whitaker Gala ever had.

This time, the organizers asked me to speak.

I almost declined.

Then I accepted.

The event was held in a renovated theater.

When I stepped onto the stage, I saw hundreds of people.

I thought about my family.

Not with bitterness.

With distance.

I spoke about planning.

About details.

About how an event could look
