in our kitchen, Lucia invited Felix to spend a weekend at her house.

She claimed she needed help with renovations.

There was nothing unusual about that.

Lucia had always found reasons to need Felix.

A leaking faucet.

A broken shelf.

A cabinet that needed moving.

A light fixture she couldn't reach.

Whenever she wanted him nearby, there was always a practical excuse.

On Friday evening, Felix kissed my forehead before leaving.

“I'll be back Sunday.”

“Drive there.

Mortgage statements.

Payment histories.

Bank transfers.

Renovation invoices.

Tax documents.

Property records.

Income statements.

Copies of every major financial document connected to our marriage.

I closed the drawer again.

Sunday came.

At 4:17 in the afternoon, Felix walked through the front door.

He didn't take off his shoes.

That was the first sign.

He usually complained if there was rain on the floor.

That afternoon, he didn't seem to notice.

He stood in the living room with his hands in his pockets.

I looked at him.

“What happened?”

He swallowed.

“My months.

Someone else had been planning it for years.

He began listing what he intended to take.

The television.

The living room sofa.

The dining set.

The sound system.

The bedroom furniture.

Several appliances.

The expensive coffee machine.

A television mounted on the wall.

Even a few offended.

“I’m taking most of the furniture.”

“If you purchased it, take it.”

“I might take everything.”

I looked directly at changed.

I think he had prepared himself for a completely different woman.

The woman he expected was supposed to cry.

She was supposed to beg.

She was supposed to accuse him of abandoning her.

She was supposed to demand that he reconsider.

Instead, I stepped aside.

“All right.”

He didn't know what to do with that.

The next morning, a moving truck arrived.

Lucia got out of the passenger side.

I saw her through the front window.

She was wearing a cream-colored coat and holding a clipboard.

For a moment, I almost laughed.

She looked like someone supervising an acquisition.

The movers entered.

Lucia followed them into the house without waiting to be invited.

She looked around the living room.

“Start with the sofa.”

One of the movers nodded.

She pointed toward the television.

“That too.”

Then the dining table.

Then the chairs.

Then the sound system.

She moved from room to room with increasing confidence.

Felix followed behind her.

I stood near the staircase.

He wouldn't look at me.

Lucia finally did.

Her expression was almost satisfied.

“You know,” she said, “this wouldn't have happened if you had taken better care of my son.”

I said nothing.

She smiled.

“Some people don't appreciate what they're given until it's gone.”

The movers carried out the sofa.

I watched it disappear through the front door.

The sofa had been purchased by Felix.

That was true.

So I let it go.

The dining set went next.

Then the television.

Then the appliances.

One by one, the house emptied.

The strange thing was that I felt no panic.

For years, I had imagined what it would feel like to lose the things inside this house.

I had assumed the furniture represented security.

That day, I discovered something different.

Furniture was replaceable.

A documented equity position in a property was not the same thing as a sofa.

Lucia didn't know that.

She saw objects.

I saw ownership, contributions, records, and legal consequences.

But I wasn't going to explain any of that yet.

She needed to believe her story.

That belief was part of what would eventually expose it.

A mover carried out the coffee machine.

Lucia glanced at me.

“You should have thought about this before.”

I almost asked her what she meant.

Then I realized she wanted me to defend myself.

I didn't.

She wanted an argument.

I gave her silence.

By noon, half the house was empty.

The walls looked strange without pictures.

The living room echoed.

The kitchen counters were bare.

The bedroom felt unfamiliar without the furniture.

Felix walked toward me.

“I hope you find someone who appreciates you someday.”

He meant it sincerely.

That was almost painful.

He wasn't trying to insult me.

He genuinely believed he was leaving a woman who had depended on him for eight years.

“I’ll be fine,” I said.

He nodded.

Then he left.

Lucia followed him.

The truck pulled away.

I watched until it disappeared around the corner.

Then I closed the front door.

The house was silent.

For the first time in eight years, there was no Felix.

No Lucia.

No moving crew.

No argument.

Just me.

And the house.

I walked into the empty living room.

The floor showed faint rectangles where the furniture had stood.

There was a pale patch on the wall where a painting had protected the paint from sunlight.

The refrigerator hummed in the kitchen.

That was when I allowed myself one long breath.

Then I took out my phone.

I called Diana.

She answered almost immediately.

“Rachel?”

“It happened.”

Her voice became serious.

“When?”

“About ten minutes ago.”

“Are
