marriage certificate in my purse and more questions than when I arrived.

On the subway home, I reread the first page of Larry's letter.

If I gave you a problem you could solve, I knew you'd solve it.

That sentence hurt because it was true.

For two years, I had handed Larry things.

Food.

Socks.

Coffee.

Information about shelters.

Phone numbers.

Once, during a freezing spell, I had spent half my lunch break calling shelters until I found a bed available three neighborhoods away.

Larry had thanked me.

I had never considered that he might have been watching me just as closely as I was watching him.

By the time I reached his old subway stop, I couldn't keep going outside.

Larry's spot was empty.

I sat down anyway.

The city moved around me.

People hurried into the station.

Cars passed.

Someone laughed into a phone.

A train groaned beneath the pavement.

I placed Larry's coffee beside me.

Then I unfolded the next page of his letter.

The first sentence made my throat tighten.

I didn't need a wife to make my life matter, Sarah.

The next line was worse.

But I did want to know what it felt like, just once, to have somebody choose that word with me.

I stopped reading.

My fingers trembled.

Then I forced myself to continue.

I knew if I'd told you the truth, you might still have said yes.

I looked at the empty place beside me.

“So why didn't you?” I whispered.

The answer was written directly underneath.

Because then I'd have to hear you decide whether loneliness was a good enough reason.

I closed my eyes.

For the first time since Larry died, I understood that the mystery wasn't why he had needed a wife.

The mystery was why he had chosen me.

And I had a feeling the rest of his letter was about to answer that.

<a
