me an invitation.

I could say no.

That mattered more than anything.

We spent the afternoon going through the files.

By evening, we had identified thirty-seven people whose contact information was still current.

Some were elderly.

Some had moved.

Some had families.

One woman had become a social worker.

One man owned a small repair shop.

Another had become a teacher.

Larry had stood beside them at a difficult moment.

Then he had kept watching from a distance.

I wondered how many people had done the same for him without knowing.

Before we left, Margaret handed me a final envelope.

“This was in the witness room.”

My name was written instruction.

Don't build a monument to me.

Build something useful.

I sat on the old bench outside the courthouse.

Daniel sat beside me.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then he said, “What will you do?”

I looked at Larry's photograph.

“I don't know.”

He night, I went home.

I placed all of Larry's letters into one box.

Then the photograph.

Then the notebook.

Then the brass key.

I kept our marriage certificate separate.

That belonged to me.

Not to a foundation.

Not to a courthouse.

Not to Larry's story.

To me.

I sat at the kitchen table until midnight.

Then I opened my laptop.

I searched the old account information.

The fund still existed.

It was small.

Almost forgotten.

But alive.

I stared at the account statement.

There was one recent transaction.

A deposit.

The date was three days before Larry died.

The amount was modest.

But the description caught my eye.

For the first person she chooses to help.

I froze.

Larry had added that after our wedding.

He had expected me to find it.

The next morning, I called the bank.

Then Margaret.

Then Daniel.

We met at the courthouse.

For the first time, the three of us sat together around the table where Larry had spent so many years processing other people's marriages.

I placed the statement in front of them.

“We don't know who the first person
