words.

I stood in the middle of my kitchen with the phone pressed against my ear, staring at the photograph on the table.

“My sister may not be the person we originally thought she was.”

“What does that mean?”

The investigator exhaled.

“I can't discuss the entire investigation.”

“You just told me something that changes everything.”

“I understand.”

“Then tell me what you can.”

He paused.

“The transfer was unusual.”

“How?”

“It moved through more than one financial institution.”

My eyes went to the stack of documents.

“Was that deliberate?”

“We don't know.”

“You said the money is still there.”

“We believe a substantial portion is.”

“Can it be returned?”

“Potentially.”

I gripped the edge of the counter.

“Then why isn't it already back?”

“Because the receiving institution has to verify the claim and comply with the investigation.”

“How long?”

“I can't give you a timeline.”

I closed my eyes.

After everything, I had expected the worst.

Now I had something almost as difficult.

Hope.

It was easier to despair than to wait.

“There's something else,” he said.

“What?”

“Your sister's communications indicate she may have believed someone was monitoring the transaction.”

I looked at the photograph again.

“Who?”

“We don't know.”

“Elliot Mercer?”

Silence.

That silence told me more than his words had.

“You know that name.”

“I didn't say that.”

“You didn't have to.”

“Ms. Vance, please don't investigate this yourself.”

“I need to understand what happened to my family.”

“Your priority should be protecting yourself and your daughter.”

That sentence made me stop.

“Why?”

“I can't elaborate.”

The call ended.

I stood there for several seconds.

Then I locked the front door.

I checked the windows.

I didn't know whether I was being foolish or cautious.

For the first time, I understood why the investigator had sounded so serious.

Maya was sitting at the table.

“Is my aunt in trouble?”

“I don't know.”

“Is she coming back?”

“I don't know that either.”

She looked at the photograph.

“That's the man I saw.”

I turned.

“What?”

“Elliot.”

“You've seen him?”

She nodded.

“Where?”

“At Aunt Monique's house.”

“When?”

“Before she left.”

I sat across from her.

“What did you see?”

Maya thought carefully.

“He was talking to Aunt Monique in the driveway.”

“Was Chad there?”

“No.”

“What were they saying?”

“I couldn't hear everything.”

“Anything?”

“He said something about a deadline.”

My stomach tightened.

“What else?”

“He said she couldn't change her mind.”

I leaned back.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“You were working.”

I almost smiled at the absurdity of it.

My daughter had apparently been collecting pieces of an adult mystery while I was answering emails and trying to get dinner on the table.

“Did Monique look scared?”

Maya nodded.

“She was crying.”

That changed everything.

Monique had not looked frightened in the photograph from Dubai.

She had looked excited.

But maybe the photograph had been staged.

Maybe the entire trip had been.

I searched the files again.

There were hotel confirmations.

Flight tickets.

Business documents.

Messages.

Then I noticed something I hadn't seen before.

A reservation had been made under Monique's name for a hotel in Dubai.

But another reservation had been made under Chad's name at a different hotel.

Same arrival date.

Different location.

Why?

I printed both.

Then I found a third reservation.

Elliot Mercer.

Same city.

Same week.

Different hotel.

Three people.

Three reservations.

And yet Monique had sent me a photograph suggesting she and Chad were together.

I called my sister.

She didn't answer.

I tried again.

Nothing.

Then I received a message.

“Stop calling me.”

I stared at the words.

I typed back.

“Are you safe?”

The response came almost immediately.

“No.”

I froze.

Another message appeared.

“I shouldn't have taken your money.”

I read it again.

Then:

“But I didn't have a choice.”

My fingers hovered over the screen.

“Who made you?”

No response.

I sent another message.

“Is it Elliot?”

The typing indicator appeared.

Then disappeared.

Appeared again.

Disappeared.

Finally, one word arrived.

“Yes.

I couldn't breathe.

I called her immediately.

This time she answered.

Her face appeared on the screen.

She was sitting somewhere dark. A hotel room, perhaps. The lighting was poor. Her makeup was gone. Her hair was pulled back, and there were dark circles beneath her eyes.

“Where are you?”

“I can't tell you.”

“Are you alone?”

She looked over her shoulder.

“Yes.”

“Where's Chad?”

She closed her eyes.

“I don't know.”

My heart dropped.

“What do you mean you don't know?”

“He left.”

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

“Why?”

“He found out the money was frozen.”

I stared at her.

“Did he know you were stealing from me?”

Monique looked away.

“I thought I was helping him.”

“You stole $150,000.”

“I know.”

“You left me with nothing.”

“I know.”

“You left your niece watching her mother fall apart.”

Her face crumpled.

“I know.”

For the first time since this began, I saw genuine shame in her expression.

But I wasn't ready to forgive her.

“Why did you do it?”

She wiped her eyes.

“Elliot said Chad owed him money.”

“For what?”

“I don't know.”

“Then why would you give him mine?”

“Because he said if I didn't, Chad would be arrested.”

I stared at her.

“Arrested for what?”

“I don't know.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I don't expect anything.”

Her voice broke.

“I was stupid.”

“No. You were selfish.”

She nodded.

“I was.”

There was no argument.

That made it harder.

“Where is my money?”

“I don't know.”

“The bank says it's being held.”

Monique looked startled.

“They found it?”

“Yes.”

She whispered something I couldn't hear.

“What?”

“I thought Elliot had it.”

“What does that mean?”

“He told me the money would be transferred into an account he controlled.”

“Did you see the account?”

“No.”

“Then how did you know it wasn't there?”

“He showed me a confirmation.”

I remembered the documents.

The intermediary company.

Elliot.

Everything was connecting.

“What was the real plan?”

Monique stared at the floor.

“I was supposed to transfer the money, fly to Dubai, and wait.”

“For what?”

“He said once the funds cleared, Chad and I would receive our share.”

“What share?”

“Half.”

I felt sick.

“So this was an investment scam?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Then what?”

She hesitated.

“I think Elliot was moving money for someone else.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“Monique.”

“I swear.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“He said there were people who could destroy Chad if we didn't cooperate.”

I wanted to believe her.

But I remembered the months of lies.

The stolen money.

The secret planning.

The hotel.

The photographs.

I couldn't separate fear from guilt anymore.

“Why did you warn me in that photograph?”

Her face changed.

“You found it?”

“Yes.”

She looked terrified.

“I wasn't warning you about Elliot.”

My stomach dropped.

“Then who?”

Monique leaned closer to the camera.

Her voice fell to a whisper.

“Mom and Dad.”

I couldn't speak.

“What?”

“Don't trust them.”

The call ended.

I stared at the blank screen.

For several seconds, I couldn't move.

Then someone knocked on my front door.

Three slow knocks.

Maya looked up from the table.

I looked at the door.

Neither of us spoke.

Another knock came.

I moved toward the hallway.

“Mom?”

I raised one finger.

Stay quiet.

I approached the door without making a sound.

Through the peephole, I saw a man standing in the hallway.

Tall.

Dark hair.

A faint scar near his chin.

Elliot Mercer.

And in his hand was an envelope with my name
