He looked nothing like the man in the photograph from Dubai. There was no polished smile now, no expensive confidence. His face was expressionless.

Behind me, Maya whispered, “Mom?”

I turned toward her and motioned for silence.

Then Elliot spoke through the from the hallway.

“No. I suppose it isn't.”

I looked through the peephole again.

He was alone.

At least, I couldn't see anyone else.

“What do you want?”

“To give you something.”

“You can leave it outside.”

“I could.”

He looked directly toward the peephole.

“But if you open the door, I can explain.”

I thought about the investigator's warning.

Protect yourself and your daughter.

I didn't Elliot.

Except Elliot wasn't Elliot.

The second man beside my father was older, thinner, and clean-shaven.

The caption on the back read:

Daniel Mercer, 2018.

I stared at the photograph.

The resemblance was obvious.

Elliot had lied about being alone in this story.

He had a brother.

I looked through the told her the truth.

“No.”

She leaned against me.

I showed her none of the photographs.

She didn't need to see them.

But I did need to understand why my parents had been involved.

The flash drive contained only a handful of files.

The first was a spreadsheet.

Names.

Dates.

Amounts.

Transfers.

The second was a scanned contract.

The third was a recorded audio file.

I hesitated before
