to.”

She looked at the statements.

“Then why did you believe her?”

I had no good answer.

“Because I trusted her.”

Maya looked at me.

“And not me?”

The question hurt because it was fair.

“I should have trusted you enough to ask.”

She nodded.

That was all she said.

The next morning, Gabriel arrived with Laura.

He brought a box of documents.

“We found something else.”

He placed several envelopes on the table.

They were addressed to me.

My name was written in Maya's handwriting.

I stared at them.

“Where did you get these?”

“Maya found them in her old room at your mother's house.”

She looked confused.

“I found them behind the bottom drawer.”

I picked up the first envelope.

It was dated three years earlier.

The second was from the following year.

The third was only six months old.

None had been opened.

I looked at Maya.

“You wrote these?”

She nodded.

“I thought maybe you would answer.”

“Why didn't you send them?”

“Grandma said you'd already told me not to contact you so much.”

My hands shook.

I opened the oldest one.

Inside was a single sheet of lined paper.

The handwriting was uneven.

She had written about school.

About a science project.

About missing her mother.

About wanting to visit me.

At the bottom she had written, “I hope you're not disappointed in me.”

I couldn't finish reading.

I put the letter down.

Laura quietly turned away.

Gabriel said nothing.

Maya watched me.

“Are you mad?”

“No.”

“Then why are you crying?”

“Because I should have received this.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

The discovery changed the case.

Gabriel photographed every envelope.

He documented where they had been found.

He added them to the evidence file.

Then he asked Maya if she remembered anything else being withheld.

She thought carefully.

“Report cards.”

“What about them?”

“Grandma said you didn't want to see them.”

I looked at Gabriel.

He wrote it down.

We contacted the school.

Within hours, they provided copies of academic records that had never reached me.

Maya's grades were excellent.

Not perfect.

But strong.

Her teachers described her as disciplined, quiet, and unusually concerned about whether assignments would cost money.

One teacher had written a note recommending her for a scholarship.

The recommendation had never been forwarded.

Another teacher had asked for parental contact after noticing Maya frequently skipped lunch.

That message had gone to my mother's phone.

Not mine.

The pattern was becoming undeniable.

This was not one misunderstanding.

It was years of controlled information.

That afternoon, Gabriel filed the first formal requests to obtain the financial records and school documents.

He also advised me to keep Maya away from the confrontation until the proper authorities could review what had happened.

I agreed.

But Maya had one request.

“I want to know what happens to Grandma.”

I looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

“If she loses everything because of me…”

“She isn't losing anything because of you.”

“But she said…”

“I know what she said.”

Maya looked at the floor.

“What if she says I lied?”

I crouched in front of her.

“Then the documents will speak.”

She looked at me.

“Documents can't tell the truth.”

“No.”

I held her gaze.

“But people can preserve it.”

That evening, I received a call from the school.

The counselor said the district had begun reviewing the assistance applications connected to Maya.

There was another problem.

The school had not merely recorded Maya as low-income.

The records showed that my mother had repeatedly renewed the status.

Each renewal required updated financial information.

Each time, she had reported that I provided little or no support.

The latest renewal was only three months old.

I stared at the date.

Three months.

At that time, I had sent Evelyn nearly $4,000 for school-related expenses.

The lie had been renewed while she was using the money.

I forwarded the records to Gabriel.

His response came quickly.

“Do not contact her.”

I didn't.

The next morning, my mother called anyway.

I let it ring.

Then another call came.

Then a text.

“Please come talk to me alone.”

I didn't respond.

A second message appeared.

“You are destroying this family.”

I deleted nothing.

I forwarded everything to Gabriel.

Then Maya walked into the kitchen.

She saw my phone.

“Grandma?”

“Yes.”

“What does she want?”

“She wants to talk.”

“Will you?”

“Not alone.”

Maya nodded.

She poured herself a glass of water.

Then she looked at me.

“Good.”

It was a small word.

But I knew what it meant.

For years, she had watched adults make decisions about her without asking.

Now she was beginning to understand that she could have a voice too.

And that was exactly what I wanted her to learn.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Records From School Exposed a Pattern No One Could
