The ceilings were high, the staircase curved toward the second floor, and the polished floors carried the faint smell of cedar and old furniture. Dust covered the windowsills, but the house itself had been maintained.

Emma stood in the foyer with her mouth slightly open.

“This was Grandpa’s house?”

“Yes.”

She looked at me.

“And Dad grew up here?”

“Yes.”

She turned toward Grant.

“Were you happy here?”

Grant stood behind us, one hand resting against the doorframe.

“Sometimes.”

Emma considered that answer.

“Only sometimes?”

Grant smiled faintly.

“That is probably the most honest answer.”

Evan walked toward the staircase.

“Where was your room?”

Grant pointed upstairs.

“Second door on the left.”

Evan looked at me.

“Can we see it?”

I glanced at Grant.

He nodded.

We went upstairs together.

Grant's old bedroom had been left almost untouched. A faded baseball pennant still hung above the desk. There were scratches on the wooden floor near the closet, and inside a cabinet sat a stack of old school notebooks.

Noah pulled one out.

“You were terrible at geometry.”

Grant laughed.

“I was worse at algebra.”

Liam found an old photograph.

Grant was seventeen, standing beside Harrison beside a fishing boat.

“You were skinny.”

“I was seventeen.”

“You still had hair.”

Grant touched the top of his head.

“Some of us age with dignity.”

Ruby laughed.

It was a small sound, but it changed the room.

For months, the children had been careful around Grant.

That afternoon was the first time they teased him.

He looked at me.

I saw the surprise in his face.

He understood what it meant.

They were beginning to let him in.

Not as the husband who had abandoned me.

Not yet even as their father.

But as Grant.

A person.

A man they could decide whether to trust.

I walked downstairs while they remained in the bedroom.

In the hallway, I noticed a narrow door beneath the staircase.

It was locked.

“What's in there?” I asked.

Grant looked over.

“I don't know.”

“You grew up here.”

“I never had the key.”

That caught my attention.

“Did Harrison?”

“Yes.”

“Maybe Daniel has it.”

Grant shook his head.

“Dad never mentioned the room.”

I looked at the door.

There was something about it that bothered me.

Not because I believed every locked door concealed a secret.

Because Harrison had left the house to the children.

And he had specifically told Daniel there was something they needed to discover for themselves.

I called Daniel.

He answered on the second ring.

“Did Harrison ever mention a locked room beneath the staircase?”

There was silence.

Then he said, “He did.”

Grant and I exchanged a look.

“What did he say?”

“He instructed me not to open it until after the estate was settled.”

I stared at the door.

“The estate is settled.”

“Yes.”

“Do you have the key?”

“I do.”

Daniel arrived an hour later.

The children gathered around the door.

He removed a small brass key from his briefcase.

Grant stepped aside.

Daniel unlocked the door.

The room was smaller than I expected.

It contained filing cabinets, several cardboard boxes, an old desk, and a steel safe.

Dust covered everything.

Harrison had been keeping records.

Not business records.

Personal ones.

Daniel opened the first box.

Inside were copies of letters.

My letters.

Letters I had never received.

I recognized the handwriting immediately.

My hands began to shake.

“Harrison kept all of them?”

Daniel nodded.

“He wanted a record.”

I lifted one.

The envelope had been addressed to me at an apartment where I had lived briefly after leaving Texas.

I had never seen it.

Another was addressed to my military housing.

Another had been sent to an address in Colorado.

None had reached me.

Grant took a step backward.

“Victoria.”

Daniel did not answer.

He didn't need to.

Noah picked up another envelope.

“What's that?”

I took it from him.

“It was meant for me.”

“Why didn't you get it?”

“I don't know.”

Grant looked at Daniel.

“Do you?”

Daniel opened a folder.

“Harrison hired someone to investigate the missing correspondence.”

My chest tightened.

“And?”

“He found evidence that several letters had been redirected.”

“By Victoria?”

“We cannot prove every letter was intercepted by her personally.”

Grant stared at the floor.

“But you can prove some.”

Daniel nodded.

“There are copies of the forwarding requests.”

Grant closed his eyes.

I had spent years believing Harrison's silence meant he had eventually decided I was guilty.

He had not.

He had been trying to reach me.

And someone had made sure I never knew.

Ruby came closer.

“Mom?”

I looked at her.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

It was not completely true.

But I smiled anyway.

“I just wish I had known.”

Evan looked at Grant.

“Did you know Grandpa was trying to contact Mom?”

“No.”

“Why didn't he tell you?”

Grant stared at the boxes.

“I don't know.”

That answer had become familiar.

Not an excuse.

Just an admission of how much he had failed to see.

Daniel opened another box.

Inside was a handwritten journal.

Harrison's journal.

The first page contained a date.

Ten years ago.

Grant sat down.

“What did he write?”

Daniel handed it to him.

Grant read silently.

Then he passed it to me.

I read the entry.

Harrison had written about the night Grant threw me out.

He had arrived at the house after the argument.

He had seen my suitcase beside the front door.

He had tried to stop Grant.

Grant had refused to listen.

Harrison wrote that he had never seen his son so convinced of something so wrong.

The next entry was dated two weeks later.

Harrison had written that he had confronted Victoria.

She had admitted she knew I had been telling the truth.

My stomach tightened.

Grant read over my shoulder.

“She admitted it?”

I nodded.

He stood abruptly.

“She admitted it to him?”

“Yes.”

He looked at Daniel.

“Why didn't he tell me?”

“He tried.”

Grant shook his head.

“I never knew.”

The children had gone silent.

Evan finally spoke.

“So Grandpa knew Dad was wrong.”

“Yes,” I said.

Evan looked at Grant.

“And Dad still didn't find Mom.”

Grant looked at his son.

“No.”

The word was barely audible.

The room seemed smaller.

I closed the journal.

“We should stop for today.”

No one argued.

Before leaving, I looked once more at the steel safe.

“What is inside?”

Daniel looked at me.

“Harrison's final file.”

“What file?”

“The one he told me could only be opened when all five children were present.”

The children looked at one another.

Grant's face tightened.

I felt the old instinct to protect them.

“Do we need to open it now?”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

“Then when?”

“When you're ready.”

I looked at the five children.

They had already heard enough for one day.

“We'll come back.”

Outside, the sun was beginning to set.

Grant walked beside me.

“I never knew.”

“I know.”

“I don't expect you to forgive me.”

“I know.”

He looked toward the house.

“Maybe Dad left that file because he knew I would eventually need to face everything.”

“Maybe.”

We reached the cars.

Grant stopped.

“Savannah.”

I turned.

“If there is anything else in there that hurts you, you don't have to read it.”

I looked at him.

“That decision belongs to me.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

I drove home with the children.

The house remained behind us.

So did the locked safe.

But for the first time, I understood that Harrison had not simply left his grandchildren a house.

He had left them the evidence of a truth their family had spent a decade avoiding.

And the next time we opened that safe, none of us would be able to pretend we did not know what we might find.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Safe Held
