through her attorney.

I almost refused.

Then I changed my mind.

Not because I wanted an apology.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because there was one question I had carried for ten years.

Why?

Why had she done it?

I had known she wanted Grant.

I had known she had lied.

But I had never understood why she had been willing to destroy so many lives to get what she wanted.

We met in a quiet conference room.

Grant came with me.

Victoria entered last.

She looked older.

The woman who had once seemed completely certain of herself now moved carefully, as though every step required consideration.

She sat across from us.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then she looked at me.

“I know you don't owe me forgiveness.”

“No.”

“I know I can't change what happened.”

“No.”

She nodded.

“I still wanted to explain.”

“Then explain.”

She looked at Grant.

“I loved him.”

Grant's expression remained neutral.

“I know.”

“I thought he loved me too.”

“He loved Savannah.”

Victoria's eyes dropped.

“I knew.”

The admission was quiet.

“I knew before I started.”

I stared at her.

“Then why?”

She took a breath.

“Because I couldn't accept that he would always choose you.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“It is the only one I have.”

She looked at me.

“You had everything.”

I almost laughed.

“I had a husband who believed you over me.”

“You had his love.”

“And you destroyed it.”

“Yes.”

Grant spoke for the first time.

“Why did you keep going after the divorce?”

Victoria looked at him.

“What do you mean?”

“The letters.”

Her face changed.

“I don't know what you're talking about.”

Grant placed the file on the table.

“You redirected them.”

She stared at the papers.

“You intercepted messages from Major Reed.”

Silence.

“You paid the hotel employee.”

Silence.

“You knew the children existed.”

Victoria closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

I felt the answer more than I heard it.

“How long?”

“Three years.”

“Three years before Harrison died?”

“Yes.”

“You knew about my children for three years?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell Grant?”

She looked at him.

“Because I knew he would go looking.”

Grant stared at her.

“And you didn't want that.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because if you found them, you would eventually find her.”

I felt the room go cold.

“You were afraid I would tell the truth.”

“Yes.”

Grant leaned back.

“And you thought you could keep lying forever.”

Victoria looked at him.

“I thought if enough time passed, nobody would care anymore.”

I looked at her.

“That is what you were counting on.”

“Yes.”

She began to cry.

I did not move.

For years, I had imagined this moment.

I had imagined satisfaction.

There was none.

Only sadness.

Not for Victoria.

For the people she had hurt.

For Harrison.

For the children.

For the younger version of myself who had stood in that house begging Grant to believe her.

Grant looked at me.

“Do you have anything else to ask?”

I nodded.

“One thing.”

Victoria looked at me.

“Did you ever regret it?”

She wiped her eyes.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Not immediately.”

I appreciated the honesty.

“When?”

“When I saw Evan.”

My chest tightened.

“You saw him?”

“Once.”

“When?”

“He was about four.”

I stared at her.

“Where?”

“Outside a school.”

“You followed him?”

“I was visiting someone nearby.”

“Why didn't you come to me?”

“Because I was ashamed.”

I shook my head.

“You were afraid.”

“Yes.”

“There's a difference.”

She nodded.

“Yes.”

Grant stood.

“We're finished.”

Victoria looked at him.

“Grant.”

He stopped.

“I loved you.”

He did not answer.

She looked at me.

“I am sorry.”

I held her gaze.

“I believe that you are sorry.”

She seemed surprised.

“But I will never give you the comfort of saying it made things right.”

Her lips trembled.

“I understand.”

We left.

Outside, the afternoon air felt warmer than it had inside.

Grant and I walked toward the parking lot.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

“You don't have to be.”

“I know.”

We stopped beside the car.

I looked back at the building.

“For ten years, I thought I needed her to admit what she did.”

Grant waited.

“I don't think I did.”

“What did you need?”

“I needed to know I hadn't imagined what happened.”

He looked at me.

“You never did.”

“I know that now.”

We drove home separately.

That evening, the children were gathered in the living room.

Evan had just returned from college.

Noah was visiting for the weekend.

Liam was repairing something at the dining table.

Ruby was editing photographs.

Emma was sitting on the floor with a notebook.

They looked up when I entered.

Emma smiled.

“You're late.”

“I had somewhere to go.”

“Was it bad?”

I smiled.

“No.”

She studied my face.

“Then it was important.”

“Yes.”

She returned to her notebook.

Life continued.

That was the strange thing.

The past could shake you.

It could reopen doors.

It could force old questions into the light.

But eventually, someone still had to make dinner.

Someone still had to wash the dishes.

Someone still had to ask whether the laundry had been moved.

That night, we ate together.

Grant joined us later.

He brought dessert.

Emma accused him of buying it instead of making it.

“I was busy.”

“You were at the bakery.”

“That's a form of work.”

“No, it isn't.”

Everyone laughed.

I watched them.

Five children.

One father learning how to be present.

One mother who had finally stopped waiting for the past to give her permission to live.

And one empty chair that belonged to Harrison.

We still talked about him.

Not every day.

But often.

We remembered the things he had done right.

We remembered the things he had failed to do.

We remembered that love could coexist with regret.

Later that night, after everyone had gone home, I stood alone in the kitchen.

Grant came beside me.

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“For letting me become part of this.”

I looked at him.

“They chose.”

“Yes.”

“That matters.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

I looked around the room.

This house had once represented betrayal.

Now it held laughter.

It held photographs.

It held school certificates.

It held five sets of memories.

It held a family that had not been destroyed by the lie.

Changed, yes.

Scarred, certainly.

But not destroyed.

Grant reached for the light switch.

“Ready?”

I nodded.

We turned off the kitchen light.

Before leaving, I looked once toward the hallway.

For a second, I imagined Harrison standing there, watching the children argue over dessert.

Then I smiled.

Maybe that was enough.

Not because the past had been repaired.

It hadn't.

But because the truth had finally become stronger than the lie.

And because ten years after I had been thrown out, I was no longer standing outside the Whitmore family looking in.

I had built my own place at the table.

The children had built theirs.

And Grant had learned that love was not something another person owed him simply because he had once been loved.

It was something he had to protect when it mattered.

That lesson had cost all of us ten years.

But the remaining years were ours.

And this time, nobody else would decide what we did with them.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: Years Had Passed, Yet One Final Letter From
