Everything smelled new: fresh carpet, paper, cleaning solution, and roasted beans.

Claire walked beside me without touching me.

She seemed to understand that I needed the distance.

"The children's room is still here," she said.

I followed her down a short hallway.

When she opened the door, I stopped.

The room was smaller than I remembered.

That was the first strange thing.

The second was the carpet. It was gray now, not blue.

But the shape of the room was the same.

The shelves near the windows.

The little round tables.

The low reading corner.

And suddenly I remembered sitting on the floor with my legs crossed while a girl beside me argued that I had skipped a paragraph.

"You skipped it," she had said.

"I didn't."

"You did."

"You weren't even reading."

"I was listening."

I blinked.

Claire stood near the doorway.

"What did you remember?"

"She accused me of skipping a paragraph."

Claire smiled.

"That sounds like her."

I walked toward the shelves.

There were adventure books near the window. I ran my fingers along the spines.

One title stopped me.

The Lighthouse at Gull Point.

I pulled it from the shelf.

My stomach tightened.

"I know this."

Claire didn't answer immediately.

"You and Nora fought over that book."

"Why?"

"Because you wanted to finish it first."

I opened it.

A page near the middle had a faint pencil mark in the margin.

I didn't know whether it was Nora's.

But I wanted it to be.

"She read ahead," I said.

"Always."

"I hated that."

"She knew."

I smiled despite myself.

Then the smile faded.

"Tell me what happened to her."

Claire sat at the little table.

I sat opposite her.

She told me about the summer.

Nora had been feeling unusually well. Her doctors had been optimistic enough that their mother allowed her to join the reading program. Claire often drove her there, then waited in the adult section while Nora disappeared among the shelves.

"She liked being there because nobody watched her," Claire said.

"What do you mean?"

"At home, everyone was careful. Too careful. They watched how fast she walked. How long she stood. Whether she was tired."

"But here?"

"Here, she was just a kid."

I looked at the photograph.

"And me?"

"You didn't know she was sick."

"That mattered to her."

"Very much."

Claire told me that Nora once said I was the only child who treated her normally.

I shook my head.

"I must have been awful."

"You were eight."

"Still."

"You made her cry once."

I looked up.

"What did I do?"

"You told everyone she cheated at Uno."

I laughed.

"She did."

"She claimed you were jealous."

"I probably was."

Claire laughed softly.

For the first time that night, the sound didn't feel painful.

Then her expression changed.

"She talked about you after you moved."

I stopped smiling.

"What?"

"You moved away shortly after that summer."

"I don't remember."

"Your family moved out of town. Nora kept asking when you were coming back."

My throat tightened.

"Did she know she was sick?"

"Yes."

"Did she know she was dying?"

Claire looked down.

"Not at first."

She explained that Nora's condition deteriorated toward the end of the summer. Their mother took her to Philadelphia for specialized treatment. Everyone expected her to return.

She never did.

"Nora died four days before Christmas," Claire said.

I stared at the table.

"She was nine."

"Yes."

"Did you keep this photograph all those years?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because it was one of the few photographs where she looked completely ordinary."

That sentence stayed with me.

Not brave.

Not fragile.

Not sick.

Ordinary.

Just a girl holding a book beside a boy who didn't know enough to treat her differently.

I looked at Claire.

"When did you find me?"

"Not until much later."

"How?"

She explained that she remembered my first name, my face, and fragments of information. She remembered my mother driving a red car. She remembered that my family moved away.

But none of that was enough.

Then, years later, she found an old library newsletter containing a photograph from the reading program.

My name was listed underneath.

"That gave you my last name?"

"Yes."

"And then?"

"I found an old school record online. Then another. Eventually I found your social media account."

I stared at her.

"You were watching me?"

"No."

She paused.

"I looked at your public profile a few times."

"How many?"

"Enough that I was embarrassed."

That answer almost made me smile.

"What did you see?"

"Mostly pictures of food and your dog."

"I don't have a dog."

"I know."

I stared at her.

She smiled.

"I was joking."

I shook my head.

"You really are impossible."

"That was one of Nora's favorite complaints about me."

The smile disappeared from my face.

"Nora knew you were looking for me?"

"No."

"Then why look?"

Claire took a long breath.

"Because I wanted to tell you that she remembered you."

I looked away.

"And then?"

"Then I became afraid."

"Of what?"

"Of what you would think."

I understood immediately.

"You were afraid I'd think you were using Nora to get close to me."

"Yes."

"But you did use her."

Claire didn't defend herself.

"Yes."

That honesty made the silence worse.

"At first," she said, "I thought I could meet you, tell you about her, and disappear."

"Then we met."

"Then we met."

I remembered that first coffee.

The sunlight through the windows.

The way Claire had laughed when I mispronounced a street name.

The way she had listened when I talked about my father's absence.

The second coffee.

The third.

The hours.

"You should have told me."

"I know."

"Why didn't you?"

Claire looked directly at me.

"Because I fell in love with you."

I wasn't prepared for that.

She didn't say it dramatically.

She didn't reach across the table.

She simply said it.

And somehow that made it harder to dismiss.

"How long?"

"I don't know."

"That's not helpful."

"Maybe the second month."

"Maybe?"

"I was trying not to."

I looked at her.

"Because of the age difference?"

"Partly."

"Because of Nora?"

"Mostly."

She told me she worried that loving me would contaminate the memory of her sister. She feared I might always wonder whether Claire saw me or merely saw a child she remembered.

"And did you?"

"Did I what?"

"See me?"

She took a moment.

"Eventually, yes."

I wanted to believe her.

I wasn't sure I could.

I stood and walked toward the window.

Outside, people crossed the street carrying umbrellas.

"Why did you write 'Found Ethan today. Tell him'?"

Claire came to stand several feet behind me.

"Because when your profile appeared, I knew immediately."

"And you thought that was a sign?"

"I thought it was a chance."

"A chance to do what?"

"Finish something I never got to finish."

I turned around.

"What?"

"Thanking you."

"For what?"

"For being her friend."

I looked down.

"I don't remember enough to deserve that."

"You don't have to deserve it."

She returned to the table and picked up the photograph.

"Do you remember the last time you saw her?"

I closed my eyes.

A memory surfaced.

Nora was angry.

She had slammed the book shut.

I had said something cruel because I was eight and wanted to win an argument.

Then I had walked away.

"Maybe."

"What do you remember?"

"I told her to finish the book herself."

Claire's eyes softened.

"That sounds like you."

"I was angry."

"She was too."

"Was that the last time?"

"I don't know."

I looked at her.

"You don't?"

"I wasn't there every day."

That answer mattered.

It wasn't polished.

It wasn't designed to comfort me.

It was simply honest.

I sat again.

"What did she say about me in the hospital?"

Claire looked at the floor.

"She said you were annoying."

I laughed quietly.

"Of course."

"She also said you always waited."

"Waited for what?"

"For her."

Claire explained that Nora sometimes lost her place while reading because her eyes became tired. I would stop reading until she caught up.

"I didn't know I did that."

"She noticed."

I looked at the little chair beside mine.

A child-sized chair.

Empty.

For the first time that night, I understood what Claire had been carrying.

Not simply grief.

A memory of someone who had vanished before she could finish becoming herself.

And somehow, I was one of the last people alive who remembered her as a child.

That realization frightened me.

"What do you want from me now?"

Claire answered immediately.

"Nothing."

I looked at her.

"Nothing?"

"I wanted you to know."

"And if knowing changes how I feel about you?"

"I'll live with that."

It was the first time I believed she understood what she had risked.

We left the library shortly after nine.

In the parking lot, Claire stopped beside her car.

"Do you want me to come home with you?"

I thought about it.

"No."

She nodded.

"I understand."

"I need four days."

"Four days?"

"I don't know why. I just need four."

"Okay."

I drove home alone.

That night, I placed the photograph on my kitchen table.

I studied my younger face.

Then Nora's.

Then the handwriting.

Found Ethan today.

Tell him.

I wondered what she had expected me to say.

I wondered what she had wanted Claire to tell me.

Most of all, I wondered whether Claire had really shown me everything.

Four days later, I returned to the library.

I found the same book.

The Lighthouse at Gull Point.

I checked it out.

Inside the front cover, someone had written a name in pencil.

Nora.

I stood there staring at it.

Then I turned the page.

On the inside of the back cover was another message.

This one wasn't Claire's handwriting.

It was a child's.

And it contained my name.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: The Note Inside Nora’s Book Changed What I Thought I Knew About Her, Claire, and the Day Our Paths Had First Crossed

The Pine Street Library looked nothing like the place I remembered.
