Sometimes we read. Sometimes we argued about books. Sometimes we sat across from each other without speaking much at all.

The strange thing was that the silence no longer felt threatening.

Before the photograph, silence between us had usually meant anticipation. One of us was waiting for the other to say something important. Afterward, silence became ordinary. Comfortable, even.

I thought that meant the worst was behind us.

I was wrong.

It happened on an ordinary Thursday in October.

Rain tapped against the library windows while Claire searched through a shelf near the children's reading corner. I was sitting at our usual table, looking through an old stack of reading-program records Martha had allowed us to examine.

Most of them were boring.

Attendance sheets.

Book lists.

Names of children who had checked out books.

Then I found one page with a familiar heading.

SUMMER READING CLUB — FINAL WEEK.

My eyes moved down the list.

Nora.

Ethan.

Beside both names was the same small star Martha had shown us months earlier.

But underneath Nora's name, someone had written a number.

17.

I frowned.

Claire noticed.

"What?"

"Do you remember how many books Nora read that summer?"

"Twenty-three, maybe."

"This says seventeen."

Claire came over.

She leaned against the table and studied the page.

"Maybe this was only the final-week count."

"Maybe."

I turned the page.

The next sheet was missing.

I checked again.

There was a torn edge along the binding.

"Something's gone."

Claire's expression tightened.

"You're sure?"

"The page after this should be here."

Martha was helping a mother at the front desk, so we waited.

When she came over, I showed her the ledger.

"Do you know what happened to the missing page?"

She looked at it for several seconds.

"No."

"Was it removed recently?"

"I don't think so."

"Could it have been damaged during the renovation?"

"Possibly."

Claire glanced at me.

I knew that look.

She was thinking the same thing I was.

We had spent months learning not to turn every unexplained detail into a mystery.

But this wasn't nothing.

The page was missing from the exact week Nora left for Philadelphia.

Martha took the ledger.

"I'll check the storage boxes."

She disappeared into the back.

Claire sat beside me.

"You think there's something else."

"I don't know."

"You've gotten very serious."

"I'm looking at a missing page."

"You always get serious when you find missing pages."

"I don't."

She smiled.

"You absolutely do."

I reached for her hand.

"Maybe I just like knowing things."

"That is a dangerous habit."

"For you?"

"For both of us."

Martha returned carrying a cardboard folder.

She placed it on the table.

"I found these."

Inside were several loose papers.

One was a photocopy of an old attendance sheet.

Another was a handwritten note from a librarian.

The final sheet was a children's drawing.

I recognized Nora's handwriting immediately.

She had drawn the lighthouse again.

This time, two figures stood at the top.

One had dark hair.

The other had yellow glasses.

Underneath them was a sentence.

WE ARE GOING TO FINISH IT.

I looked at Claire.

"Finish what?"

Claire shook her head.

"I don't know."

I turned the drawing over.

Nothing.

Then I noticed faint pencil marks near the bottom.

I held it beneath the light.

There were words.

Almost erased.

Meet me after closing.

I felt a chill.

Claire leaned closer.

"Who is she talking to?"

"Maybe me."

"But you weren't here after closing."

"Not that I remember."

Martha heard us.

She took the drawing.

Her face changed.

"I remember this."

"What?"

"Nora asked me whether she could stay late."

"When?"

"The day before she left."

Claire went still.

"Why?"

"She said she wanted to give Ethan something."

I stared at her.

"What?"

Martha looked embarrassed.

"I don't remember."

"You must."

"It was seventeen years ago."

"I know."

She closed her eyes.

"Wait."

She walked away again.

This time she returned with an old key ring.

"There was a storage room behind the children's section."

She placed a small brass key on the table.

"Before the renovation, some children used to leave drawings there."

"Why?"

"They called it the lighthouse room."

Claire looked at me.

"The lighthouse."

Martha nodded.

"We never knew why they chose that name."

She handed me the key.

"The room doesn't exist anymore. But the old wall is still behind the new shelving."

We moved the shelf enough to reveal a narrow wooden panel.

The key fit.

Behind it was a shallow compartment.

Inside were children's books, drawings, and a small metal box.

Claire looked at me.

"Open it."

I did.

Inside was a cheap plastic bracelet, two marbles, a broken pencil, and a folded piece of paper.

The paper had my name.

Ethan.

I unfolded it.

It was written in Nora's handwriting.

I want you to have this if I don't come back.

Underneath was a drawing of a lighthouse.

And beneath that:

Don't let Claire throw away my things.

Claire covered her mouth.

I laughed softly.

"She knew you."

"She really did."

There was one more line.

She thinks memories hurt too much.

Tell her they don't have to.

Claire sat down.

She cried quietly.

I put the paper in front of her.

"She was trying to help you."

"I know."

"Maybe this is what she meant."

"What?"

"When she told you not to be sad forever."

Claire wiped her face.

"I spent years thinking remembering her meant staying trapped with her."

"And now?"

"Now I think she wanted me to keep living."

We closed the compartment.

The discovery didn't change our relationship.

It changed something inside Claire.

She stopped treating Nora's belongings like fragile evidence.

She began using them.

The bracelet went into a small frame beside a photograph.

The lighthouse drawing became part of a scrapbook.

The letters went into a box that she kept on a shelf instead of hidden inside a closet.

A week later, Claire asked me to meet her at her apartment.

She had something to show me.

When I arrived, the dining table was covered with photographs.

Not of Nora.

Of Claire.

Childhood pictures.

Teenage pictures.

College.

Her first apartment.

Her first job.

I smiled.

"You've been hiding all this?"

"No."

"Then why have I never seen it?"

"I never liked looking at myself."

I sat down.

She placed one photograph in front of me.

Claire at twenty-five.

Exactly twenty years before the birthday when everything changed.

She looked younger than I expected.

"That's the year Nora died," she said.

I looked at the photograph.

"And that's the year you started looking for me."

"Yes."

I realized something.

"You weren't just searching for me."

Claire shook her head.

"I was searching for who I was before she died."

That explained more than anything else.

Her search for me hadn't simply been about Nora.

It had been about a version of herself she had lost.

"I think I understand now."

"Do you?"

"Partly."

She smiled.

"That's enough."

We spent the evening looking through photographs.

For the first time, Claire told me stories about Nora without stopping herself halfway through.

The ridiculous birthday cake.

The argument over a blue sweater.

The time Nora hid Claire's car keys because she didn't want her to leave for work.

I laughed.

"She sounds exhausting."

"She was."

"And you miss her."

"Every day."

"But it doesn't hurt the same."

"No."

Claire looked at me.

"Because now I know missing someone doesn't mean refusing to live."

That night, when I left, she kissed me at the door.

It wasn't dramatic.

It wasn't desperate.

It was simply familiar.

I walked toward my car feeling strangely light.

Then my phone rang.

Martha.

"It's about the storage box," she said.

"What about it?"

"I found one more thing."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"A library receipt."

"For what?"

She paused.

"The day Nora left for Philadelphia."

"What did she check out?"

Martha's voice became quieter.

"The Lighthouse at Gull Point."

I frowned.

"That's the book we found."

"No."

"What?"

"This receipt says she checked out two copies."

I stopped walking.

"Two?"

"One under Nora's name."

"And the other?"

Martha hesitated.

"Ethan."

I looked back toward the library.

I had no memory of checking out that book.

Yet the receipt said I had.

And suddenly, one question mattered more than all the others.

If I had taken a second copy of the book seventeen years ago, where had it gone?

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Second Library Copy Led Me Somewhere I Had Never Thought to Look, and the Answer Forced Me to Reconsider One of My Earliest Memories

For several months, life settled into a rhythm that neither Claire nor I had expected.
