Your father took you."

"My father?"

"Yes."

I sat down.

My parents had divorced years later.

At the time, I barely remembered my father being involved in anything.

"Why did Dad take me?"

"Because you insisted."

I couldn't breathe properly.

"Insisted on what?"

"Seeing Nora."

I stared at the wall.

Everything I thought I knew about that summer was wrong.

I called Claire.

She arrived within an hour.

I showed her the book.

She read my note.

Her eyes filled.

"You went."

"I didn't remember."

"Why didn't I know?"

"I don't know."

We searched the book together.

Near the final chapter, I found another note.

Nora's handwriting.

You came.

I laughed through my shock.

"You came."

Claire stared at the page.

"I thought you didn't."

"I thought I didn't."

The note continued.

I'm glad.

I don't want you to be scared.

I closed my eyes.

"I was scared."

Claire took my hand.

"What else?"

I turned the page.

There was a drawing of two chairs.

One labeled Nora.

One labeled Ethan.

Between them was a book.

Then a sentence.

We will finish tomorrow.

I looked at Claire.

"But there was no tomorrow."

"No."

We sat on the floor together.

For seventeen years, I had believed I had simply forgotten a girl from a summer reading program.

The truth was more complicated.

I had remembered her so deeply that my mind had buried the memory.

My father had taken me to Philadelphia.

I had seen Nora.

I had promised to return.

And then she died.

Claire found another page.

"There's something here."

It was a hospital visitor log.

My name appeared beside Nora's.

Date.

Time.

Visitor.

Ethan.

Claire covered her mouth.

"You were there."

"Yes."

"But why did you forget?"

I didn't know.

Then my mother called again.

"I remembered something."

"What?"

"After the funeral, you asked me why everyone was crying."

My chest tightened.

"What did I say?"

"You said Nora told you not to cry."

I closed my eyes.

The room went silent.

Claire began crying.

I pulled her close.

For once, there was no need to fix anything.

We simply sat there.

Later that evening, my mother sent me an old photograph.

It showed me outside the hospital.

I was holding a book.

The Lighthouse at Gull Point.

Beside me stood Claire.

She looked younger.

Tired.

And in the background was Nora's hospital window.

I stared at the photograph.

"You were there."

Claire nodded.

"I remember."

"You saw me."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I didn't know whether you remembered."

I looked at her.

"Why didn't you tell me when we met?"

"Because I was afraid."

"Again."

"Again."

I laughed.

"You're very good at keeping secrets."

She smiled sadly.

"I was very bad at knowing when secrets stopped protecting people."

That sentence stayed with me.

We decided to return to the library.

Martha listened to everything.

Then she opened an old filing cabinet.

"I may have something."

She produced a visitor sign-in sheet.

The hospital visit had been recorded because Nora's family had contacted the library afterward.

There was a handwritten note attached.

Nora wanted Ethan to have the book.

Martha looked at me.

"I thought her family took it."

"They gave me the other copy."

I held it up.

Martha smiled.

"Then Nora got what she wanted."

"What?"

"She wanted you to finish the story."

I looked at Claire.

For the first time, the mystery no longer felt frightening.

It felt like a conversation that had taken seventeen years to finish.

That night, Claire and I sat in the children's room.

I opened the book.

She read the first line.

Then I read the second.

We alternated until we reached the end.

The ending was still terrible.

Claire laughed.

"Nora would hate it."

"Absolutely."

I closed the book.

"She was right about something."

"What?"

"The middle matters."

Claire rested her head against my shoulder.

"She was right about a lot."

I kissed her forehead.

The next morning, I received an email from the library.

Martha had scanned another document.

The subject line was simple.

Nora's Final Request.

I opened the attachment.

The first line read:

Please let Ethan decide for himself what happens next.

I stared at the screen.

The request wasn't about the book.

It wasn't about Claire.

It was about choice.

Nora had understood that even as a child.

And suddenly I knew what I needed to do.

<a
