before breakfast.

She opened the door wearing an old gray sweater and looked at me with immediate concern.

"What happened?"

"I found something."

She stepped aside.

I showed her the email.

She read the document twice.

Her expression changed.

"What does it say?"

"Read the bottom."

She did.

Please let Ethan decide for himself what happens next.

Claire sat down.

I remained standing.

"You knew."

"No."

"She wrote this before she died."

"Yes."

"About me?"

"I think so."

Claire looked at the document.

"Maybe she was afraid I would make decisions for you."

"She knew you."

"Apparently."

I sat beside her.

"I think she wanted me to choose."

"Choose what?"

"You."

Claire looked at me.

The question remained between us.

For months, I had been moving toward her.

But I had never said the word aloud.

Not completely.

Not after learning why we met.

Not after discovering the photograph.

Not after finding the hospital records.

I finally understood why.

I didn't want my love for Claire to become a debt.

I didn't want to stay because Nora had once wanted us to meet.

I didn't want to leave because the beginning had been complicated.

I wanted the decision to belong to me.

So I told Claire exactly that.

"I love you."

She didn't move.

I continued.

"But I need you to understand something."

"I'm listening."

"I love you because of who you are now."

She closed her eyes.

"Not because Nora knew me."

"Not because she wanted us to meet."

"Not because you spent years searching for me."

"Not because I feel responsible for your happiness."

Claire's eyes filled.

"I know."

"No."

I touched her hand.

"I need you to know that this is my choice."

She squeezed my fingers.

"It is."

For the first time, there was no question left between us.

We kissed.

Then Claire pulled away.

"There's something I need to tell you."

"What?"

"I didn't tell you everything about the day you met Nora."

I stared at her.

She looked terrified.

"What now?"

"I found a letter from your father."

My stomach tightened.

"My father?"

"Yes."

"Why would he write to you?"

"He didn't."

She went to a drawer and returned with an envelope.

"My mother gave this to me after she died."

I opened it.

The letter was from my father to Claire's mother.

It explained that he had taken me to Philadelphia because I had begged to see Nora.

But there was something else.

He had promised Nora's family that I wouldn't be told how serious her condition was.

The reason was simple.

They wanted me to remember her as my friend, not as a dying child.

I read the sentence again.

It changed everything.

My father hadn't taken me there by accident.

He had protected me from information I was too young to understand.

I looked at Claire.

"Did my father know you?"

"Yes."

"How?"

"Nora's family knew him through work."

I sat back.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?"

"Because everyone thought they were protecting you."

I laughed bitterly.

"Everyone kept protecting me with secrets."

Claire nodded.

"I know."

The pattern was suddenly obvious.

People had hidden things because they thought truth would hurt me.

But the hiding had created something worse.

A blank space where memories should have been.

That afternoon, I called my father.

He answered after a long silence.

"I wondered when you'd ask."

"You knew about Nora."

"Yes."

"You took me to Philadelphia."

"Yes."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because you were eight."

"I deserved to know."

"Maybe."

He sighed.

"You asked to see her. You cried when we left."

I closed my eyes.

"I don't remember."

"You gave her your book."

"I did?"

"Yes."

I looked at the copy on my table.

"She gave it back?"

"No."

My father paused.

"She told you to keep it."

I stared at the pages.

That was the missing piece.

The book I had believed I found years later had actually been with me since the hospital.

I had carried it home.

I had forgotten.

But some part of me had preserved it anyway.

After the call ended, I sat beside Claire.

"Why does this feel like everything is finally in the right place?"

"Because maybe it is."

I smiled.

Then she asked, "Are you angry with your father?"

"I was."

"And now?"

"I think he was trying to do what he thought was right."

Claire nodded.

"That's what everyone was doing."

"Yes."

"And yet we all made mistakes."

"Yes."

We sat quietly.

The following week, we returned to the cemetery.

I brought the book.

Claire brought Nora's yellow-painted glasses, carefully preserved in a small case.

She placed them beside the stone.

"I kept these for seventeen years," she said.

I looked at them.

"They're terrible."

She laughed.

"Nora would agree."

We stood there until sunset.

Then Claire said something that surprised me.

"I don't think we need to come here every year."

I looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because Nora isn't here."

She touched the stone.

"She's with us."

I understood.

Grief had changed shape.

It was no longer a place we visited.

It was something we carried.

Months later, we returned to the Pine Street Library.

Martha had arranged a small display.

The Lighthouse at Gull Point.

The photograph.

A copy of Nora's drawing.

A short note about the summer reading club.

There was no mention of Claire and me.

That was intentional.

This wasn't our love story.

It was Nora's memory.

We sat at our table.

Claire opened the book.

"You know what I think?"

"What?"

"Nora would have hated how serious we've made everything."

"Definitely."

"She'd tell us to stop talking and read."

"She'd cheat."

"Absolutely."

I smiled.

Then Claire reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

"What is that?"

"Your birthday present."

"My birthday isn't for months."

"I know."

She handed it to me.

Inside was a photograph.

Not the old one.

A new one.

It showed Claire and me sitting in the library.

Between us was The Lighthouse at Gull Point.

On the back, she had written:

For the life we choose ourselves.

I looked at her.

"You made this?"

"Yes."

I kissed her.

We stayed there until the library closed.

When we stepped outside, the rain had stopped.

The pavement reflected the streetlights.

Claire slipped her hand into mine.

We walked toward the car.

And for once, neither of us looked backward.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The Story Finally Became Ours When We Returned to the Place It Started, Carrying Nothing But the Truth and One Last Unanswered Memory

I drove to Claire's apartment before breakfast.
