The number was unfamiliar. I almost ignored it. Then I answered.

"Hello?"

"Is this Ethan?"

The voice belonged to Martha.

I straightened.

"Yes."

"I hope I'm not catching you at a bad time."

I looked at the blackened toast.

"Nothing important."

She laughed.

"Good. I need to ask you something."

"What kind of something?"

"A favor."

I turned off the stove.

"What happened?"

"Nothing bad. Actually, I think you'll like it."

That was how Martha always began difficult conversations. She never announced the problem. She gave you a reason to stay on the line.

"The library is creating a permanent archive for the old summer reading programs," she said. "They want to preserve some of the children's materials before everything gets digitized."

I leaned against the counter.

"Okay."

"Nora's materials are part of it."

My hand tightened around the phone.

"I see."

"There are photographs, reading logs, drawings, letters, and a few recorded interviews from families."

I glanced toward the cabinet where we kept Nora's things.

"What do you need from me?"

"There's something missing."

I closed my eyes.

"Of course there is."

Martha laughed softly.

"That's exactly what I thought you'd say."

She explained that the library had found a cassette tape in an old storage box. The label had faded almost completely, but someone had written two names on it.

Nora.

Ethan.

I stopped breathing for a moment.

"I don't remember being recorded."

"Neither did I."

"Have you played it?"

"Not yet."

"Why not?"

"Because I thought you should hear it first."

I looked toward the bedroom.

Claire was still asleep.

"Can you send it to me?"

"I could, but I'd rather you come here."

"Why?"

"Because there's another name written underneath yours."

My stomach tightened.

"Whose?"

Martha hesitated.

"Claire."

I didn't say anything.

"Come when you can," she said.

The line went quiet.

I hung up.

A few minutes later, Claire walked into the kitchen wearing one of my old shirts.

"You look worried."

"Martha called."

Claire stopped.

"What happened?"

I told her.

She listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she looked toward the cabinet.

"Another recording?"

"Apparently."

"Do you want to go?"

"Yes."

"Then let's go."

There was no fear in her voice.

That surprised me.

Years earlier, the discovery of every new clue had felt like a threat. Now it felt different.

We knew what had happened.

Or at least we knew enough.

Nora had died.

I had visited her.

Claire had spent years carrying guilt.

We had fallen in love after finding each other again.

The past no longer had the power to decide our future.

At least, that's what I believed.

We reached the library shortly after noon.

Martha was waiting in the staff room.

On the table sat a small plastic cassette case.

The label was nearly blank.

Nora's handwriting remained visible in one corner.

E.

Underneath it was another mark.

C.

Claire picked it up.

"That's my handwriting."

Martha looked surprised.

"You recognize it?"

"I think so."

"When did you write on it?"

Claire shook her head.

"I don't know."

I looked at her.

"Maybe you didn't."

Martha placed an old cassette recorder on the table.

"The machine still works."

She inserted the tape.

For several seconds, there was only static.

Then a child's voice.

"Okay. You have to answer honestly."

My heart stopped.

Nora.

Her voice was younger than I remembered.

Lighter.

Annoyingly confident.

A second voice followed.

Mine.

"I am answering honestly."

"You aren't."

"I am."

"You just lied."

"I didn't."

Claire covered her mouth.

Martha looked at us.

The recording continued.

Nora asked me what I would do if I could have one wish.

My younger voice answered, "Get a dog."

Nora laughed.

"That's stupid."

"It's not."

"What about you?"

"I'd go somewhere nobody knows me."

"Why?"

"Because everyone thinks I'm sick."

Silence.

Then my younger voice said, "I know."

Nora's tone changed.

"You aren't supposed to."

"I know."

"Who told you?"

"You did."

"I did not."

"You did yesterday."

"I forgot."

"You forget everything."

"I don't."

"You forgot your glasses."

"I painted them."

"That doesn't count."

Claire laughed quietly.

The recording continued for several minutes.

It was ordinary.

Two children arguing.

Two friends talking about books.

Nothing dramatic.

Then Nora asked a question.

"Would you remember me when you're old?"

My younger voice hesitated.

"You're not old."

"That's not what I asked."

"I'll remember."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

The tape crackled.

Then another voice entered.

Claire.

She sounded younger, but it was unmistakably her.

"Nora, your mother is ready."

"Five more minutes."

"Two."

"Three."

"Two."

"Fine."

Nora turned toward me.

"Remember."

"I will."

The tape ended.

Nobody spoke.

Claire was crying.

I reached for her hand.

She squeezed it.

Martha sat quietly.

"I found something else in the box," she said.

She handed Claire a second cassette.

"This one is labeled with your name."

Claire stared at it.

"Mine?"

"Yes."

We played it.

At first, there was only the sound of footsteps.

Then Claire's younger voice.

"I don't know if this works."

A pause.

"Nora says I'm supposed to record this because I forget things."

A small laugh.

"I don't forget."

Then silence.

"I know Ethan is leaving."

My chest tightened.

"He doesn't know yet."

Claire's voice trembled.

"I don't want him to know."

The tape continued.

"I keep thinking if I don't tell him, maybe he won't be sad."

She breathed in.

"Nora says that's stupid."

Claire laughed through tears.

"She's probably right."

Then came the sentence that changed the room.

"If something happens, I want Ethan to remember her as she was before the hospital."

The tape stopped.

Martha looked at us.

"There's more."

She rewound it.

The final section played.

Claire's voice was almost a whisper.

"If I ever find him again, I don't want him to think I came back because of guilt."

She paused.

"I want him to know I came back because I missed him too."

Claire stared at the recorder.

I didn't know what to say.

She had never told me that.

Not directly.

I turned toward her.

"Is that why you searched?"

She wiped her eyes.

"Partly."

"And the rest?"

She smiled.

"I wanted to know whether you remembered."

"I did."

"Eventually."

"Eventually."

We laughed.

The recording had done something neither of us expected.

It hadn't revealed another secret.

It had simply returned two voices to the people who had grown up carrying them.

Before we left, Martha asked if we wanted copies.

"Yes," I said.

Claire nodded.

"Both."

We walked out into the afternoon light.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then Claire said, "I think I've finally stopped being afraid of the past."

I looked at her.

"Good."

"Because now I understand something."

"What?"

"The past isn't asking us to come back."

She took my hand.

"It's asking us to remember where we came from."

I smiled.

We drove home with the tapes on the passenger seat.

That night, we listened to them again.

And again.

Not because we were searching for clues.

Because we liked hearing the voices.

For the first time, Nora wasn't a photograph.

She was a child laughing at my terrible answers.

She was a girl arguing about books.

She was a sister teasing Claire.

She was alive in the only way memory could make possible.

And that was enough.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: The More We Listened to the Old Recording, the More Clearly We Heard the Choice Nora Had Been Trying to Give Us

The call came on a Tuesday morning, nearly three years after Claire and I had moved into our apartment together.
