10 – The More We Listened to the Old Recording, the More Clearly We Heard the Choice Nora Had Been Trying to Give Us

The cassette became part of our evenings.

Not every night.

We weren't trying to live inside the past.

But occasionally, after dinner, Claire would take the recorder from the shelf and ask, "Do you want to hear it?"

Sometimes I said yes.

Sometimes she did.

Sometimes we left it alone.

The important thing was that we finally had control over when the memories entered our lives.

One Saturday morning, Claire found me sitting on the balcony with the original photograph.

She sat beside me.

"You still carry that?"

"Sometimes."

"Why?"

I looked at the children in the picture.

"Because I like seeing who I was."

Claire nodded.

"I like seeing who you were too."

I turned toward her.

"Even with that haircut?"

"Especially with that haircut."

I laughed.

She rested her head against my shoulder.

For several minutes, we watched traffic move below us.

Then she said, "Do you ever wonder what Nora would think of us?"

"Yes."

"And?"

"I think she'd make fun of us."

"Definitely."

"Then she'd ask whether we were happy."

Claire was quiet.

"I think I'd say yes."

I took her hand.

"So would I."

That should have been the end of it.

But later that week, Martha called again.

"I found the original reading-program photograph."

"The one we've already seen?"

"No."

"A different one."

I met her at the library alone.

She handed me a photograph larger than the others.

It showed the entire group.

Nora was near the center.

I was beside her.

Claire stood in the back.

I looked at Claire's younger face.

She was smiling.

But she wasn't looking at the camera.

She was looking at Nora.

I turned the photograph over.

A date.

Then another handwritten sentence.

Everyone came back except one.

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Martha shook her head.

"I don't know."

"Could it mean Nora?"

"Possibly."

I looked at the children.

There were twelve.

I counted.

Eleven names were listed.

The twelfth name had been crossed out.

"Who was this?"

Martha frowned.

"I don't remember."

"Can you find out?"

"I'll try."

I took a photograph of the page.

"Why does this matter?"

Martha looked at me.

"I don't know if it does."

That was the honest answer.

And after everything we'd been through, honesty mattered more than certainty.

I went home.

Claire was in the living room.

She saw my face.

"What now?"

I showed her the photograph.

She studied it.

Then she pointed.

"That boy."

"What about him?"

"I remember him."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

We sat together.

Claire closed her eyes.

"He was always with Nora."

"Was he in the reading group?"

"I think so."

"Do you remember his name?"

"No."

She opened her eyes.

"Maybe Daniel."

I searched the library records.

No Daniel.

Then she said another name.

"Lucas."

Nothing.

We decided not to chase it.

Not every missing name needed to become another mystery.

Two days later, Martha called.

She had found the attendance records.

The missing child's name was Lucas Bell.

He had attended only three sessions.

Then his family moved.

That was all.

No tragedy.

No hidden connection.

No secret.

Just a child who moved away.

I laughed when Martha told me.

"All that for a kid who moved."

"That's what happens when you've spent years looking for hidden meanings."

She was right.

The old story had trained us to expect every missing detail to matter.

But life wasn't a mystery novel.

Sometimes a missing person was simply somewhere else.

That realization helped me more than I expected.

For years, I had believed every unanswered question needed an answer.

Now I understood that some questions could remain open without threatening us.

That was a different kind of peace.

A month later, Claire and I attended the library's archive opening.

The old materials were displayed behind glass.

The photograph.

The reading logs.

Nora's drawing.

The cassette recordings.

The book.

A small plaque explained that the collection preserved memories from the summer reading program.

No dramatic story.

No mention of how those materials had changed two lives.

That was exactly right.

The children in the photographs deserved to exist beyond the stories adults later built around them.

I stood in front of Nora's photograph.

A little girl with yellow-painted glasses looked back at me.

Claire stood beside me.

"Do you miss her?"

I thought about it.

"Yes."

"Does it hurt?"

"Sometimes."

She nodded.

"Me too."

I put my arm around her.

A school group entered the room.

Children ran toward the bookshelves.

One girl picked up The Lighthouse at Gull Point.

She carried it to a table.

I smiled.

Claire noticed.

"You're okay?"

"Yeah."

The girl opened the book.

Another child joined her.

They began arguing about who would read first.

Claire laughed.

"That's familiar."

"Very."

We stayed until the children left.

On the way home, Claire said, "I want to do something."

"What?"

"I want to write down everything I remember about Nora."

"Why?"

"So it doesn't disappear."

I nodded.

"I'll help."

We started that weekend.

We didn't write a biography.

We wrote memories.

Nora hated bananas.

Nora loved thunderstorms.

Nora cheated at card games.

Nora could remember entire passages from books.

Nora painted her glasses yellow.

Nora hated being treated as fragile.

Nora loved the library.

Nora made Claire furious.

Nora made me laugh.

The list grew.

Some memories were tiny.

Others were important.

None were perfect.

That was what made them real.

One evening, Claire looked at the pages.

"Do you think we're doing this for her?"

I shook my head.

"Maybe we're doing it for ourselves."

She smiled.

"That's probably okay."

It was.

A few months later, we took a trip to the coast.

Nothing connected it to Nora.

That mattered.

We wanted to prove to ourselves that our life could contain places where her name never appeared.

We walked along the beach.

We ate terrible seafood.

Claire bought a ridiculous souvenir.

A tiny lighthouse.

I laughed when she showed it to me.

"Of course."

"Don't say anything."

"I didn't."

"You were thinking it."

"I was."

She put it on the hotel dresser.

That night, rain hit the windows.

Claire sat beside me.

"Do you think we would have met if Tinder never existed?"

"No."

She nodded.

"That's strange."

"Very."

"One random swipe."

"One birthday."

"One phone falling into a couch."

I smiled.

"One photograph."

"One dead girl's book."

We looked at each other.

None of those things had been planned.

Yet they had brought us here.

The next morning, Claire asked me a question.

"If we had met without Nora, would you still have fallen for me?"

I thought carefully.

"Probably."

"Probably?"

"You were forty-five."

She rolled her eyes.

"I knew you'd say that."

"And I was twenty-five."

"You're avoiding the question."

"No."

I took her hand.

"I would still have fallen for you."

She smiled.

"Good."

We kissed.

Then we went downstairs for breakfast.

The trip was ordinary.

That was exactly what we wanted.

When we returned home, we placed the little lighthouse beside the old photograph.

Two objects from two completely different lives.

One from childhood.

One from adulthood.

Both somehow connected.

Years earlier, I had thought love was supposed to erase the complicated parts of our lives.

I no longer believed that.

Love didn't erase anything.

It made room for the complicated parts without allowing them to take over everything else.

Claire and I still talked about Nora.

We also talked about bills.

Groceries.

Books.

Travel.

Whether the apartment needed repainting.

Who forgot to buy coffee.

Life was not one long emotional reckoning.

Most of it was ordinary.

And ordinary had become precious.

One evening, I took the photograph from the cabinet.

I turned it over.

The old handwriting remained.

Found Ethan today.

Tell him.

I finally understood what Claire had been trying to tell me all those years ago.

She had found me.

But she had never been able to tell me what Nora wanted me to hear.

Now I knew.

Remember me.

But don't live for me.

I put the photograph away.

Claire came into the room.

"What are you doing?"

"Nothing."

She smiled.

"Good."

I pulled her close.

For once, nothing needed solving.
