I need to review all administrative access changes made to my property during the last thirty days.”

There was a pause.

“Of course.”

“I also want every remote authorization temporarily frozen.”

Another pause.

“May I ask why?”

“Yes.”

I looked toward the sitting room.

“Because I didn't authorize them.”

The technician became noticeably more formal.

“I'll escalate this to our security administrator.”

“Do that.”

I ended the call.

Five minutes later, my phone rang.

The security administrator confirmed what I had already suspected.

Daniel had been added as a secondary administrator six months earlier.

I had never authorized it.

“Who approved the change?” I asked.

“You did, according to the record.”

“No.”

“I understand.”

“No, you don't.” I kept my voice calm. “Send me the original authorization request.”

“We can do that.”

“And the IP address.”

Another pause.

“Yes, ma'am.”

I hung up.

The room suddenly felt too quiet.

Six months.

Daniel had been trying to obtain access long before I noticed.

I opened my financial records.

Six months earlier, Daniel had started asking unusual questions.

How much did the house cost?

Who handled the insurance?

Why did certain maintenance invoices go through a company rather than directly through us?

At the time, I thought he was simply becoming interested in our finances.

Now I wasn't so sure.

I opened the folder containing our joint accounts.

There were three transfers I didn't recognize.

None was large enough to trigger an immediate alarm.

That was what made them interesting.

$4,800.

$6,200.

$3,950.

Different dates.

Different descriptions.

All routed through the same small consulting company.

I searched the company's name.

My pulse changed.

The registered owner was Daniel's cousin.

I sat back.

So there was more.

Before I could investigate further, Evelyn entered the kitchen.

“You're working again.”

I closed the folder.

“Yes.”

She frowned. “Daniel says you've been distracted.”

“I've had a lot to think about.”

“You should focus on your marriage.”

I looked at her.

“I am.”

She smiled in a way that didn't reach her eyes.

“Marriage requires obedience to each other.”

“Obedience?”

“Compromise.”

“That isn't the word you used.”

Her expression sharpened.

“You've become disrespectful.”

I stood.

“No. I've become less willing to pretend.”

For once, she didn't have an immediate response.

She walked away.

I waited until I heard her bedroom door close.

Then I returned to the office.

The next document I examined was the property insurance policy.

The house was insured under a holding company.

That company belonged to me.

Daniel's name wasn't on the ownership documents.

He was listed only as a resident spouse.

If something happened to the property, he had no authority over it.

I stared at the page.

Then I remembered something he had said two nights earlier.

“If anything happened to this house, we'd have nowhere to go.”

At the time, I thought he meant emotionally.

Now the sentence sounded different.

I opened the security camera archive.

The system stored ninety days of footage.

I searched for the night Daniel had attempted the first administrative change.

At 3:17 a.m., he had entered my office.

The image was grainy but clear enough.

He stood at my desk.

He opened the drawer where I kept the house documents.

He searched for something.

Then he took a photograph of a folder.

I paused the video.

The folder was marked with the trust's legal name.

He had been looking for evidence of ownership.

I rewound.

Watched again.

Daniel removed his phone from his pocket.

He photographed several pages.

Then he looked directly at the camera.

My heart stopped for half a second.

He knew it was there.

He stepped closer.

And smiled.

I froze the frame.

That wasn't the expression of a man who had accidentally entered his wife's office.

He had known exactly what he was doing.

I exported the footage.

Then I checked another camera.

The hallway.

At 3:21, Daniel left the office.

At 3:24, he entered the garage.

At 3:29, he left the property.

I checked the driveway camera.

His car remained parked outside.

He hadn't driven away.

Someone else had arrived.

A dark sedan stopped beyond the gate.

Daniel walked toward it.

The driver handed him something through the window.

A folder.

Daniel returned inside.

I enlarged the image.

The plate was partially visible.

I wrote down the numbers.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message appeared from Daniel.

“Don't go through my things.”

I stared at the screen.

I hadn't.

Not yet.

A second message arrived.

“You wouldn't like what you'd find.”

I read it twice.

Then I looked at the camera feed showing the hallway outside my office.

Daniel wasn't home.

So how had he known I was inside?

<a
