him.

“What?”

He pointed toward the counter.

A small pile of money sat there.

Evan's money.

At least some of it.

“The boys came in this morning.”

“Inside the diner?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“They saw Evan hand Carla his paycheck.”

Carla jacket.

That explained the torn shoulder.

I looked at the rip.

My anger rose so quickly I could barely speak.

“What happened next?”

Evan answered.

“I pulled away.”

“You fought them?”

“No.”

Sal gave him a look.

“You did more than pull away.”

Evan looked embarrassed.

“I pushed one.”

“He fell into the tray rack,” Sal said.

I remembered the crash from the phone call.

“The sound I heard.”

Sal nodded.

“The tray hit the floor.”

I breathed out.

“And then?”

“They left.”

“Did they hurt him?”

Evan shook his head.

“Not really.”

I looked at the scrape on his face.

“That doesn't look like nothing.”

He shrugged.

“I was okay.”

I stared at him.

“You are not allowed to decide that being hurt is nothing.”

A tiny smile appeared.

“Okay.”

I looked toward Carla.

She was crying again.

“I told him not to give me the money,” she said.

I shook my head.

“You didn't make him do this.”

“I know.”

She looked at Evan.

“But he kept coming back.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Carla hesitated.

“Because I was ashamed.”

That answer silenced me.

She looked down at her hands.

“I didn't want my hide.

I had once sat at our kitchen table moving bills around until the numbers stopped making sense.

I had once waited until Evan was asleep before crying.

Carla had been doing the same thing in a different house.

And my son had recognized it.

Sal leaned against the counter.

“I didn't know what to do either.”

“What do you mean?”

“I didn't want to embarrass Carla.”

He glanced toward her.

“And I didn't want to betray Evan's trust.”

I looked at him.

“So you let this continue?”

“I watched it.”

His expression hardened.

“I watched your son give away every dollar he earned.”

“Why didn't you stop him?”

“Because I tried.”

He looked at Evan.

“Several times.”

Evan nodded.

“Sal told me to keep some.”

“You should have,” I said.

Evan gave me a guilty look.

“I wanted to.”

“But?”

He looked toward Carla.

“I couldn't.”

I sighed.

“Evan.”

“I know.”

I looked at Sal.

“How much has he given her?”

Sal thought for a moment.

“About fourteen hundred dollars.”

I stared at him.

Fourteen hundred.

For a thirteen-year-old, it might as well have been a fortune.

The bike he'd wanted for nearly a year could have been sitting in our garage.

Instead, every paycheck had gone somewhere else.

I looked at my son.

“Do you still want the bike?”

He hesitated.

“Yes.”

That answer surprised me.

“You do?”

He nodded.

“I still like it.”

I smiled despite everything.

“Good.”

He looked confused.

“Good?”

“You're allowed to want something for yourself.”

His eyes lowered.

“I thought helping her was more important.”

“It was important.”

I paused.

“But that doesn't mean you have to give away everything you have.”

Sal nodded.

“That's what I've been trying to tell him.”

Carla stepped closer.

“Evan saved us.”

She looked at me.

“I don't know how else to say it.”

I shook my head.

“He shouldn't have had to.”

“No.”

Her voice trembled.

“But he did.”

She took a breath.

“The first time he gave me the money, I cried all night.”

Evan looked embarrassed.

“I told him not to tell anyone.”

“I didn't.”

“I know.”

“He never did.”

I looked at my son.

“Why did you keep it secret from me?”

He took a long time to answer.

“Because you would have made me stop.”

I couldn't argue.

If he'd told me the truth six months earlier, I probably would have.

I would have told him to keep his earnings.

I would have explained that we couldn't solve another family's problems.

I would have tried to protect him.

And perhaps, without meaning to, I would have taken away the thing he'd chosen to do.

That realization hurt.

But another thought hurt more.

My son had been carrying an adult-sized responsibility because he believed I needed him to.

I pulled him against me.

He resisted for half a second, then folded into my arms.

“I am proud of you,” I whispered.

He began crying again.

“I thought you'd be mad.”

“I was scared.”

“Of me?”

“Of what could have happened to you.”

He held on tighter.

Sal turned away.

Carla wiped her eyes.

For a moment, the diner was quiet except for the refrigerator humming behind the counter.

Then the front door opened.

Everyone looked up.

A boy stood outside.

He was taller than Evan.

Another boy appeared behind him.

Then a third.

Sal straightened.

Evan pulled away from me.

I saw the fear return to his face.

One of the boys pointed toward the counter.

“That's him.”

My heart began pounding.

Sal stepped between them and Evan.

“You need to leave.”

The boy laughed.

“We just want to talk.”

“You can talk somewhere else.”

His eyes moved toward Evan.

“Tell him to give it back.”

I looked at my son.

“What do they think he has?”

Evan shook his head.

“I don't know.”

Sal's voice became hard.

“There is no money for you here.”

The boy smiled.

“You sure about that?”

His eyes moved toward Carla.

Then toward the cash on the counter.

And I understood.

They hadn't just learned that Evan had money.

They had learned exactly what he did with it.

They knew where he went every Saturday.

They knew who received the cash.

And they had come back because they believed they could take it.

I stood beside my son.

This time, I wasn't leaving him to handle it alone.

“Sal,” I said quietly.

He looked at me.

“Call the police.”

The smile disappeared from the boy's face.

Evan looked at me.

And for the first time since Marcus died, I saw something different in my son's expression.

Not the determination of a little boy trying to become a man.

Relief.

He finally understood that he didn't have to carry everything himself.
