him.

“Yes.”

“Even though I lied?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because being proud of your heart doesn't mean ignoring your mistakes.”

He nodded.

“That makes sense.”

“Good.”

He closed his eyes.

I watched him until he fell asleep.

The next morning, I called Officer Ramirez.

She came to the house with another officer.

I showed her the photograph.

Her expression changed immediately.

“Don't delete this.”

“I won't.”

“Don't respond to the number.”

“I haven't.”

She photographed my phone screen.

Then she asked whether anything unusual had happened overnight.

“No.”

She inspected the exterior of the house.

The photograph had been taken from across the street.

There was no obvious camera.

No note.

No sign of anyone nearby.

But she found something else.

A cigarette butt near the sidewalk.

I watched her bag it.

“Could be nothing,” she said.

“But it could also matter.”

She looked at me.

“We're going to take this seriously.”

I appreciated that.

Later that morning, Sal called.

The police had reviewed the diner footage.

They had identified the three boys.

Two had already been questioned.

The third hadn't been located yet.

But the footage showed something unexpected.

The boys weren't alone when they first entered the diner.

A man had been sitting near the back.

He left shortly before they approached Evan.

“Do you recognize him?” Ramirez asked me when she showed me the image.

I stared at the screen.

No.

Then I looked again.

Something about him seemed familiar.

Not his face.

His jacket.

Dark blue work jacket.

Reflective strip near the shoulder.

I had seen one like it before.

“Where?” Ramirez asked.

I couldn't remember.

Then it came to me.

Outside the sporting-goods store.

Weeks earlier.

I had been waiting for Evan while he looked through the bicycle display.

A man had been standing near the entrance.

Same jacket.

Same posture.

Same habit of keeping one hand in his pocket.

I told Ramirez.

She wrote it down.

“Did you speak to him?”

“No.”

“Did he speak to Evan?”

“I don't know.”

She nodded.

“We'll look into it.”

That afternoon, I called Carla again.

She answered on the first ring.

“Did you recognize the man from the diner?”

“No.”

I described him.

She was silent.

Then she said, “Wait.”

“What?”

“I've seen that jacket.”

“Where?”

“At the community center.”

“What community center?”

“The one near my apartment.”

“What was he doing?”

“I thought he was maintenance.”

My heart sank.

“Was he there often?”

“Yes.”

“Could he have known your family?”

“I don't know.”

I told Ramirez.

She said she'd check.

By late afternoon, we learned the man wasn't employed by the community center.

That changed everything.

Someone had been using the location to watch Carla.

And possibly Evan.

The investigation became larger than I had imagined.

But there was one thing I couldn't understand.

Why would anyone care about a thirteen-year-old washing dishes and giving away sixty dollars a week?

It wasn't enough money to make sense.

Unless the money wasn't the point.

That thought stayed with me.

I went through Evan's room.

Not secretly.

I told him what I was doing.

We checked his backpack, school notebooks, old receipts, and the envelopes he'd kept.

Nothing.

Then I remembered something.

The first day he'd told me about the job, he'd said Sal paid sixty dollars.

But the amount he'd given Carla every week didn't always equal sixty.

Some weeks were eighty.

Some were one hundred.

I asked him about it.

He looked embarrassed.

“I worked extra.”

“For what?”

“Cleaning.”

“What else?”

“Taking out trash. Mopping.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I wanted to earn more.”

I looked at the envelopes.

The larger amounts were clustered around the weeks when Carla's son's medication was due.

That wasn't random.

Evan had been keeping track of her needs.

But then I noticed something else.

One envelope had a different date.

It was marked three weeks earlier.

The amount was two hundred dollars.

I looked at him.

“Where did this come from?”

He shook his head.

“I don't remember.”

“You don't remember two hundred dollars?”

He frowned.

“I think Sal gave me extra.”

Sal denied it when I called.

“I never gave him two hundred.”

I stared at the envelope.

“Then where did it come from?”

Sal went quiet.

“I don't know.”

That was the first answer he'd given me that truly frightened me.

Because it meant there was money in my son's records that neither of us could explain.

I asked Evan again.

He looked uncomfortable.

“Maybe somebody gave it to me.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“Evan.”

He closed his eyes.

“I found it.”

“Where?”

“Behind the diner.”

My heart stopped.

“When?”

“A few weeks ago.”

“Why didn't you tell anyone?”

“I thought someone dropped it.”

“What did you do with it?”

“I gave it to Carla.”

I stared at him.

“You gave away money you found?”

He nodded.

“Did you see anyone nearby?”

He hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“The man.”

My stomach dropped.

“What man?”

“The one from the picture.”

I felt cold.

“What did he say?”

Evan swallowed.

“He asked me what I was doing.”

“What did you tell him?”

“That I was cleaning.”

“Did he give you the money?”

“No.”

“Did he know you found it?”

“I think so.”

“What happened after?”

“He walked away.”

“Did he follow you?”

“No.”

“Are you sure?”

“I didn't see him again.”

I looked at Sal.

He had gone pale.

“What?”

Sal stared at Evan.

“The money you found.”

“What about it?”

“I thought it was missing.”

“Missing from where?”

He looked toward the office.

“From the cash drawer.”

Silence filled the diner.

I stared at him.

“You had two hundred dollars missing?”

“Yes.”

“And Evan found exactly two hundred?”

“Yes.”

I looked at Evan.

“Did you tell Sal?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“I thought it wasn't his.”

Sal shook his head slowly.

“It was.”

My mind raced.

The boys.

The envelope.

The photograph.

The man.

The missing money.

Something wasn't fitting.

Then Sal said something that made all of us stop.

“The man wasn't watching Evan because of Carla.”

I looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“Because I remember him.”

“From where?”

Sal's face had gone name.

“Daniel.”

I had never heard it before.

But Evan reacted immediately.

His face changed.

“You know him?”

I looked at my son.

“Evan?”

He shook his head.

“I've heard that name.”

“Where?”

He stared at the old cash register.

“Dad
