it?”

“I still have it.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Marcus told me not to.”

I stood.

“What did the will.”

He arrived twenty minutes later.

The envelope was old.

Yellowed at the edges.

My name was written across it in Marcus's handwriting.

I couldn't open it.

Not at first.

I sat at the kitchen table holding it.

My husband's handwriting had always looked slightly hurried.

This looked different.

Careful.

Deliberate.

As though every letter had been written while he was afraid of making a mistake.

Evan came downstairs.

“What is that?”

I showed him.

He recognized it immediately.

“Dad.”

I nodded.

We opened it together.

Inside was one page.

Marcus had written that if Daniel ever returned, I needed to understand one thing.

The money Daniel had stolen was not the reason he was dangerous.

The records were.

They contained proof of who had participated.

But Marcus had made another discovery.

Daniel had been using innocent people as intermediaries.

People who believed they were simply receiving or passing along money.

People like Carla.

People like Evan.

My hands shook.

I kept reading.

Marcus explained that he had hidden the flash drive because Daniel was searching for it.

But he also wrote that one person had unknowingly become the safest link in the chain.

A person Daniel would never suspect.

A child.

Evan looked at me.

“What does that mean?”

I couldn't answer.

Then I read the final paragraph.

Marcus had written that if Daniel ever returned, I should never let Evan believe that helping others was something he needed to be ashamed of.

He had seen how compassionate Evan was becoming.

He had worried that someone might exploit it.

My eyes blurred.

At the bottom of the page was one final sentence.

It was about the money.

Marcus had written that if Evan ever began saving his own money for someone else, I should make sure he understood the difference between kindness and responsibility.

I covered my mouth.

Evan read the sentence over my shoulder.

Then he cried.

“I think Dad knew me.”

I put my arms around him.

“He did.”

“And he knew I'd do this?”

“Maybe.”

We stayed there for a long time.

Then my phone rang.

Ramirez.

“We found the second man.”

My heart tightened.

“Who is he?”

She paused.

“His name is Paul Mercer.”

The name meant nothing to me.

But Sal knew it.

When I called him, he went silent.

“Sal?”

Finally he said, “Paul was Marcus's supervisor.”

I looked at Evan.

“What does that mean?”

Sal's voice dropped.

“It means Daniel wasn't working alone.”
