Water began rushing through the pipes.

Sophie had been home less than a minute.

At first, I thought nothing of it. Children changed habits all the time. At ten, Sophie had already abandoned several strange phases. She had once refused to wear socks with seams. For a while, every sandwich had to be cut into four squares. She had gone through a period when brushing her hair was apparently an unreasonable demand imposed by a cruel government.

So when she began showering immediately after school, I let it go.

She played outside. Her classroom opened onto a dusty playground. Her uniform sometimes came home with grass stains, pencil marks, or crumbs from lunch. Maybe she had suddenly become conscious of being dirty.

Except Sophie had never cared about cleanliness before.

This was the same girl who once walked into breakfast with purple marker across her cheek and seemed genuinely surprised when I pointed it out. She could wear the same sweatshirt three days in a row if I didn't intervene. Mud on her shoes was not a problem in her mind; it was proof that the shoes had been used correctly.

Yet now, every weekday afternoon, the bathroom was the first place she went.

No snack.

No story about school.

No complaint about homework.

No mention of Maya, her best friend.

She simply disappeared behind the locked door.

The pattern continued for weeks.

One Tuesday, I waited outside while water poured into the tub.

“Sophie?”

The water stopped.

“Yes?”

“Everything okay?”

There was a pause.

“Yeah.”

“You've been in there a while.”

“I know.”

“Do you need anything?”

“No.”

I rested my hand against the door.

“You know you can talk to me about anything, right?”

“I know, Mom.”

Her voice sounded pleasant.

Too pleasant.

Then the water started again.

That evening, she sat across from me at dinner and pushed peas into a neat little pile beside her potatoes.

“How was your spelling test?” I asked.

“Fine.”

“Maya doing okay?”

“Fine.”

“Anything interesting happen?”

“No.”

She took a bite.

I watched her for a moment.

“And how are you?”

She looked up, slightly annoyed.

“Fine.”

I smiled.

“Okay.”

I let it go.

Parents are good at explaining away things that don't make sense. We tell ourselves children are tired. Growing. Moody. Private. We find ordinary explanations because ordinary explanations are comforting.

Sophie was getting older.

School was boring.

Her uniform was uncomfortable.

She liked showers.

None of those explanations was unreasonable.

Together, though, they bothered me.

One afternoon, while we folded towels on my bed, I finally asked.

“Can I ask you something?”

Sophie nodded and kept folding.

“Why do you always shower the second you get home?”

Her hands stopped.

Only for a moment.

Then she picked up another towel.

“I like being clean.”

The answer arrived too quickly.

Not because she was sweaty.

Not because she'd fallen in mud.

Not because something had spilled on her.

Just: I like being clean.

She gave me a smile.

It wasn't the smile she made when something genuinely amused her. It was small, careful, almost practiced.

“Okay,” I said.

She relaxed immediately.

That bothered me more than the answer.

That night, after she fell asleep, I stood alone in the bathroom.

Nothing looked wrong.

Her towel hung over the rack. Her pajamas were crumpled near the hamper. Shampoo bottles crowded the edge of the bathtub. A few strands of hair curled around the drain.

I felt foolish.

What exactly was I looking for?

There was no evidence of anything unusual.

Still, I couldn't shake the feeling that I had missed something.

A week later, the bathtub stopped draining properly.

At first, the water simply disappeared more slowly than usual. Then Sophie complained that it was collecting around her feet.

Saturday morning, she was out with my sister buying art supplies, so I decided to clear the drain.

I pulled on rubber gloves, found an old towel, and took a plastic drain tool from beneath the sink.

The cover came off easily.

Hair and soap residue had collected underneath.

“Disgusting,” I muttered.

I pushed the tool deeper.

It caught on something.

I pulled.

A wet, gray knot came up from the drain, tangled with hair and soap.

Then I noticed a piece of fabric caught inside it.

I frowned.

It wasn't a washcloth.

I pulled again, more carefully this time.

Several inches of pale blue material emerged.

I carried the mess to the sink and rinsed it beneath cold water.

The soap disappeared.

The pattern appeared.

Pale blue.

Thin white lines.

Small checks.

I knew that fabric.

I saw it every weekday morning when Sophie dressed for school.

It was part of her uniform.

I stared at the torn piece in my gloved hand.

There were plenty of innocent possibilities.

Her skirt could have snagged on something.

She could have ripped it playing outside.

Maybe she'd cut the fabric herself because it bothered her.

Then I turned it over.

Near one edge was a dark brown stain.

I brought it closer to the window.

My stomach tightened.

It looked like blood.

For several seconds I didn't move.

The faucet continued running.

I shut it off.

The bathroom became completely silent.

My mind began throwing explanations at me.

Maybe Sophie had fallen.

Maybe she'd scraped her knee.

Maybe she'd cut herself and forgotten to tell me.

But if she'd been hurt, why had she hidden the fabric?

Why was part of her uniform inside the bathtub drain?

Why did she rush home every afternoon and scrub herself?

And why had she looked relieved when I accepted her explanation?

I placed the fabric inside a plastic food-storage bag.

I didn't know why.

Something in me simply said not to throw it away.

Then I picked up my phone.

School.

Whatever was happening seemed connected to school.

The main office answered after several rings.

“Westfield Elementary.”

“Hi.
