you.”

I turned.

“Tell me now.”

“Three months after Dad died, Eleanor called me.”

“Why?”

“She said Dad had left instructions for me.”

“What instructions?”

“She told me I could become the controlling shareholder if I agreed to certain conditions.”

I stared at him.

“What conditions?”

“That I stop asking questions about the old accounts.”

I felt a chill.

“Did you agree?”

“I didn't sign anything.”

“But you stopped asking.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Because she told me Dad had been involved in something illegal.”

My heart sank.

“What?”

“She said Northbridge was going to expose him.”

“Did you believe her?”

“At the time, yes.”

“And that's when you began moving money?”

He nodded.

“She said I needed cash reserves in case the now.”

I gathered the documents.

“We're going to find her.”

My lawyer arrived shortly after seven.

I showed her the photograph.

She stared at Eleanor's reflection.

“I've met her.”

“Of course you have.”

“No,” she said. “I mean recently.”

I froze.

“When?”

“Two weeks ago.”

“Why?”

“She asked about you.”

“What did she want?”

“To know whether you had opened the estate files.”

My stomach tightened.

“What did you tell her?”

“That I hadn't discussed your private room.

“She's coming after the document.”

“What document?” I asked.

“The one she tried to get from me.”

I turned.

“What?”

Daniel reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a folded sheet.

“I've had this for nine years.”

I took it.

It was a photocopy.

At the top was Michael's signature.

Underneath was a list of names.

Eleanor.

Thomas.

Victor.

Robert.

And Daniel.

Beside each name was a date.

Beside Daniel's name was one sentence.

“Protect him from his own ambition.”

I looked at my son.

He couldn't meet my eyes.

“Dad wrote this?”

“Yes.”

“And you kept it all these years?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I didn't understand it.”

“Did you ever ask Eleanor?”

“I tried.”

“What did she say?”

“That it was a private note.”

I looked at my lawyer.

“Was it?”

She shook her head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because this isn't a note.”

She pointed to the bottom.

“This is an instruction.”

I looked closer.

A reference number had been written there.

417-B.

The same number as the safety-deposit box.

My lawyer picked up the phone.

“I need the bank to preserve the access records.”

“Why?”

“Because someone has been entering those boxes.”

She looked at me.

“And we need to know when.”

The bank sent the records within the hour.

There were only two unauthorized entries.

Daniel's at 7:08.

And another.

Three days earlier.

The name made my stomach drop.

Eleanor Grant.

“She opened box 417,” I whispered.

My lawyer nodded.

“Before Daniel.”

“So she already knew.”

“Yes.”

Daniel sat down.

“What did she take?”

“We don't know.”

I looked at the envelope Michael had left.

The first envelope was still here.

The second was gone.

I remembered it.

The second envelope from box 417 had contained the list of transactions.

Eleanor had taken something else.

“What was missing from the box?”

I called the bank manager.

He checked the inventory.

Then he said something that made me stand.

“The flash drive.”

My lawyer looked at me.

“That's impossible.”

“It was there when I opened it.”

The manager paused.

“According to the access log, Eleanor entered three days before you.”

I stared at the desk.

“She copied it.”

“Most likely.”

Daniel stood.

“Then she knows everything.”

“No,” I said.

“Why not?”

“Because Michael left something she didn't know about.”

I reached into the desk.

The brass key.

I held it up.

“Box 418.”

Daniel looked confused.

“There was no box 418.”

The bank manager had said there was nothing there.

But Michael had deliberately skipped it.

I called the bank.

“I need access to box 418.”

The manager hesitated.

“Mrs. Hale—”

“Now.”

He agreed.

We drove there.

This time, I didn't tell Daniel what I suspected.

When the vault opened, I walked directly to box 418.

The key turned.

Inside was a small black notebook.

Nothing else.

I opened it.

Michael's handwriting filled the pages.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Meetings.

And one phrase repeated over and over.

“Not Northbridge.”

I read the pages quickly.

The money transfers were not being made to Northbridge.

They were being routed through it.

Northbridge was only the middle layer.

The real recipient was another entity.

Hale Family Holdings.

I stared at the name.

“That belongs to us.”

My lawyer shook her head.

“No.”

“What?”

“Hale Family Holdings was dissolved eight years ago.”

“Then how is it receiving money?”

She turned the notebook toward herself.

“It wasn't.”

I looked at the dates.

The payments had continued after the company was supposedly dissolved.

“Then someone was using its identity.”

My lawyer's expression hardened.

“Exactly.”

Daniel looked at me.

“Who could do that?”

I turned another page.

Michael had written one name.

Eleanor.

But beneath it, he had added another.

“Not alone.”

The words were underlined twice.

My lawyer asked, “Who else?”

I kept turning pages.

There were several initials.

T.R.

E.G.

A.C.

And D.H.

Daniel saw his initials.

His face fell.

“Dad thought I was involved.”

“No,” I said.

“Then why?”

“Because he was tracking the money.”

The notebook showed payments made from the company into accounts controlled by each person.

Some were small.

Some enormous.

Daniel's transfers were the largest.

But there was something strange.

Every time Daniel received money, another payment left the account within twenty-four hours.

Someone had been using him as a conduit.

My son had not simply stolen money.

He had unknowingly helped move it.

I looked at him.

“Who told you where to send the money?”

He swallowed.

“Thomas.”

“And who told Thomas?”

“I don't know.”

My lawyer pointed to one entry.

“Look.”

The date was two days before Michael died.

Beside it was a payment of $1.4 million.

The recipient wasn't Northbridge.

It wasn't Daniel.

It was Eleanor Grant.

I felt the room tilt.

“She received the money.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“We need to find out.”

Daniel whispered, “Then she killed Dad.”

“No,” my lawyer said. “We can't conclude that.”

I looked at the notebook.

Michael had written something beside Eleanor's payment.

Not an accusation.

A warning.

“Payment made under duress.”

I read it again.

Then again.

“What does that mean?”

My lawyer didn't know.

But Daniel did.

He looked up.

“Maybe Dad was paying her because she had something.”

“What?”

He shook his head.

“I don't know.”

I turned the page.

There was one final entry.

No amount.

No account number.

Only a date.

The day Michael died.

And beneath it:

“She has the original.”

I stared at those words.

“The original what?”

Nobody answered.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman's voice spoke.

“Claire.”

I recognized her immediately.

Eleanor.

“You found the notebook.”

My heart stopped.

“How do you know?”

“Because Michael always underestimated how quickly you would understand.”

“Where are you?”

“That doesn't matter.”

“What do you want?”

“The original trust agreement.”

“You already have the flash drive.”

“I want the original.”

“Why?”

“Because the copy isn't enough.”

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“You've been stealing from us for years.”

Silence.

Then she said:

“You still don't understand what Michael did.”

“Then explain it.”

“He didn't protect you from Daniel.”

I froze.

“He protected you from me.”

The call ended.

Daniel looked at me.

“What did she mean?”

I stared at the phone.

I didn't know.

But for the first time, I understood why Michael had written those words.

Do not trust her.

Not because Eleanor wanted money.

Because she knew exactly what Michael had hidden.

And she was afraid I would find it.
