told me Daniel moved overseas.”

“He did.”

“So why was money still going to him?”

Martin turned another page.

“Because he didn't bad?”

“Bad enough that someone has been making payments on his behalf for years.”

I looked at the numbers.

Mortgage payments.

Credit cards.

Private school tuition.

Medical bills.

Travel expenses.

The total was staggering.

“Ethan paid all of this?”

“Your joint because college costs would arrive sooner than we expected.

Yet he had been paying his brother's mortgage.

I felt something bitter rise in my throat.

“How much?”

Martin hesitated.

“Just over ninety thousand dollars.”

I stared at him.

Ninety thousand.

That was more than the amount Ethan had ever admitted borrowing from us.

“Where did he get that money?”

“That is what we're trying to determine.”

Martin opened another file.

“This is where it gets complicated.”

Inside was a series of transfers from an investment account I had never seen.

The account was under Ethan's name.

But it was funded by money from our company.

I frowned.

“We don't own a company together.”

“No.”

Martin tapped the page.

“Ethan impossible.”

“It isn't.”

I looked at the registration date.

Eight years earlier.

Eight years.

Ethan had created a company without telling me.

“Why?”

Martin pointed to the listed business purpose.

Real estate investments.

I shook my head.

“Ethan doesn't invest in real estate.”

Apparently, he did.

There were properties.

Small commercial buildings.

Two rental houses.

A warehouse.

And one property in another state.

I looked at the purchase dates.

They lined up with the years when Ethan had told me we couldn't afford certain things.

The years when he had insisted we keep our spending conservative.

The years when I had postponed replacing my car because we were “saving for the children.”

I felt a strange pressure behind my reason I trusted him.

He didn't tell me what I wanted to hear.

He told me what the documents said.

“What is Northbridge worth?”

“We don't around the phone.

“There is a safe-deposit box.”

I looked at Martin.

“Whose?”

“Jointly held by you and Mr. Morgan.”

I had her and ended the call.

Martin was already standing.

“Let's go.”

The bank manager brought us into a private room.

The box was small.

I recognized the key immediately.

My hands shook as I inserted it.

Inside were documents.

Property deeds.

Insurance policies.

Stock certificates.

A passport.

And a second phone.

I looked at Martin.

He didn't touch it.

“That's not mine.”

“Don't turn it on.”

There was also a brown envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Not in Ethan's handwriting.

In mine.

I opened it.

Inside was a copy of our marriage certificate.

Beneath it was another document.

A life-insurance policy.

The beneficiary designation had been changed.

I read the name.

Patricia mine.

Again, forged.

I closed my eyes.

The pattern was no longer a series of isolated crimes.

Someone had been preparing for a future in which I was either absent
