One moment I was supposed to be seated beside my father, where I had sat at almost every family dinner since childhood, and the next my card was resting halfway down the table beside an empty chair. Vanessa’s name remained directly opposite our parents.

I noticed.

Of course I noticed.

I simply said nothing.

The Hawthorne dining room had been dressed for celebration. White linen covered the long table. The silverware had been polished until the chandelier broke into thin flashes across every knife. A dozen candles burned between low arrangements of white roses, and from the kitchen came the warm smell of rosemary, roasted garlic, and butter.

Vanessa had chosen everything.

She had even selected the wine.

She moved through the room in a cream-colored dress that cost more than my first car, smiling at everyone who entered as though she were already hosting them in a restaurant bearing her own name. Around her wrist was the bracelet I had given her for her birthday three years earlier.

She caught me looking at it.

“You like it?” she asked.

“I chose it,” I said.

Her smile widened.

“That’s why I knew you’d understand.”

I almost laughed.

Instead, I reached for my water.

My father entered last. He looked tired, though he tried to disguise it beneath his usual public expression—the one he wore whenever important people were around. He had spent forty years building Hawthorne House Restaurants from a single neighborhood dining room into a regional chain with four locations, nearly two hundred employees, and a reputation that had outgrown the family name.

Tonight, however, he was not the one being celebrated.

Vanessa was.

Mother stood as he approached.

“Arthur, finally.”

“Traffic.”

“You're never late.”

“Tonight I was.”

Vanessa kissed his cheek.

“Dad, sit down.
