changed.

I stood.

Six members of the Ashford Industries board entered the foyer.

Behind them came Raymond Fletcher, the police commissioner, followed by two pale.

Miriam whispered, “That's impossible.”

“No.”

“You sold those shares.”

“I didn't.”

“We checked.”

“You checked the wrong records.”

I placed the document on the console table.

“The trust still controls thirty-eight percent of the voting drive.

“Security footage,” I said.

Miriam's face changed.

“What footage?”

“The cameras Daniel installed throughout the property after the burglary eighteen years ago.”

Garrick looked at Sienna.

“You knew about this?”

She shook her head.

“I didn't.”

“Then who gave you access?”

“The trust archive did.”

Helena Price entered the foyer carrying another folder.

Garrick saw her.

He stopped breathing.

“No.”

Helena looked at him.

“Hello, Garrick.”

Miriam stared.

“Helena?”

Three years earlier, Helena had been Ashford Industries' vice president of compliance.

She had resigned abruptly.

The official explanation had been an internal disagreement.

The real reason was buried in a report sent directly to me.

Helena had suspected financial misconduct.

At the time, she had not possessed enough evidence.

Now she did.

She placed the folder on the table.

“I found the missing approvals.”

Garrick's face tightened.

“You signed a confidentiality agreement.”

“I signed one protecting legitimate company information.”

She opened the folder.

“I never agreed to conceal fraud.”

Malcolm took the first page.

“What are we looking at?”

“North Coast Procurement.”

Sienna's face went pale.

I looked at her.

She already knew that name.

Helena continued.

“Ashford Industries paid North Coast for consulting services that were never performed.”

“How much?”

“Four-point-eight million dollars.”

Miriam stepped forward.

“That company is legitimate.”

Helena looked at her.

“Then you won't object to us examining the ownership records.”

Silence.

Helena slid another page across the table.

Malcolm read it.

Then looked up.

“North Coast Procurement is owned by Miriam Ashford.”

Garrick turned toward his mother.

“You told me the accounts were clean.”

Miriam's expression hardened.

“They were.”

Helena shook her head.

“No. They weren't.”

Garrick's eyes moved toward Sienna.

“What did you tell them?”

Sienna didn't answer.

He stepped forward.

Raymond blocked him again.

“Stay there.”

Garrick looked furious.

“I have done nothing.”

“Then you'll have nothing to fear from an investigation.”

Helena removed a photograph from the folder.

She placed it on the table.

It showed Garrick standing in the Ashford executive garage.

He was handing an envelope to Victor Shaw, the company's outside audit manager.

Malcolm stared at the photograph.

“Is that Victor?”

“Yes.”

“What's in the envelope?”

“We don't know yet.”

Garrick said nothing.

Miriam's hands began to shake.

I looked at Sienna.

“What happened last Thursday?”

She looked down at her sling.

Garrick spoke immediately.

“She was upset.”

“I didn't ask you.”

Sienna swallowed.

“I found bank statements in his office.”

Garrick closed his eyes.

“They were private.”

“They had his mother's name on them.”

Miriam said, “You had no business looking.”

Sienna's voice grew steadier.

“I asked him what North Coast was.”

“And?”

“He grabbed me.”

Garrick interrupted.

“I restrained her.”

Raymond turned.

“Let her finish.”

Sienna breathed in.

“He twisted my arm behind my back.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I heard something crack.”

I kept my face still.

Inside, something was burning.

“He pushed me against the wall,” she continued. “Then he told me that if I ever tried to interfere with his promotion, he'd make sure everyone believed I was unstable.”

Garrick shook his head.

“That is not what happened.”

Sienna looked at him.

“It is.”

Miriam spoke quickly.

“She was hysterical.”

“No,” Sienna said.

Everyone looked at her.

Miriam's voice sharpened.

“You were.”

Sienna's chin lifted.

“You told Garrick not to leave bruises where people could see them.”

The room became silent.

Garrick looked at his mother.

Miriam stared back.

For the first time, neither seemed to know what the other would say next.

Then Helena opened another file.

“There is more.”

Garrick whispered, “What?”

“The company general counsel received an email from Sienna two months ago.”

Sienna looked surprised.

“I asked about conflict-of-interest disclosures.”

Helena nodded.

“The question was forwarded to Garrick.”

Garrick's expression changed.

“That's confidential.”

“No,” Helena said. “It was company information.”

She turned another page.

“The same night, seven years of North Coast correspondence were deleted.”

Malcolm looked toward Garrick.

“By whom?”

Helena answered.

“Garrick's credentials.”

Garrick's face went blank.

I could almost see the calculations behind his eyes.

He was no longer trying to convince us that nothing had happened.

He was trying to decide what could still be saved.

Then Raymond looked at Sienna.

“Would you like medical attention?”

Garrick immediately answered.

“She doesn't need it.”

Raymond didn't even look at him.

“I asked her.”

Sienna hesitated.

I leaned close.

“You don't have to protect anyone tonight.”

Her lips trembled.

Then she nodded.

“Yes.”

She looked directly at Raymond.

“I want a doctor.”

Garrick's chair struck the floor as he stood.

“No.”

Raymond's expression hardened.

“Sit down.”

Garrick didn't.

Two detectives moved closer.

And for the first time that evening, the man who had spent months controlling every conversation realized he was no longer the person deciding what happened next.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: When Sienna Finally Told the
