at nine the next morning.

Malcolm arrived first.

He wore the same dark suit he had worn during the previous meeting.

Calm.

Measured.

Professional.

As if nothing had changed.

I watched him enter.

He looked at me.

“Mrs. Ashford.”

“Malcolm.”

His eyes moved toward Sienna.

“I hope you're feeling better.”

She didn't answer.

He sat.

The other directors followed.

Helena placed copies of the forensic report in front of each person.

Malcolm opened his.

“This is incomplete.”

“It is preliminary,” Helena said.

“You've drawn conclusions without giving management an opportunity to respond.”

“Management is under investigation.”

“You mean Garrick.”

“Yes.”

“And yet you're treating him as though guilt has already been established.”

Helena remained calm.

“We are preserving evidence.”

Malcolm closed the report.

“I move that the forensic investigation be suspended until independent counsel reviews its methodology.”

I looked around the room.

Three directors supported him.

Three did not.

The interim chair turned toward me.

“The trust holds thirty-eight percent of the voting shares.”

“Yes.”

“And the estate structure holds twelve.”

“Yes.”

“Do you intend to vote?”

“I do.”

Malcolm looked at me.

“You should reconsider.”

“Why?”

“Because you're emotionally involved.”

I met his eyes.

“I am.”

He smiled faintly.

“Then you're not impartial.”

“No.”

“I would hate for your daughter's situation to influence corporate decisions.”

Sienna's face tightened.

I answered quietly.

“My daughter's situation is not the reason the company is being investigated.”

I placed the forensic report on the table.

“Financial transfers are.”

Malcolm's expression didn't change.

But his fingers stopped moving.

Helena noticed.

So did I.

The vote proceeded.

Malcolm's motion failed.

He leaned back.

Then he produced a document.

“This changes the situation.”

He slid it across the table.

It was a challenge to the trust's voting authority.

He claimed the original trust agreement had been improperly executed.

The room became silent.

I read the argument.

It was technically sophisticated.

And wrong.

Not obviously wrong.

Carefully wrong.

It relied on a version of the trust agreement that omitted the amendment Daniel had created.

The same amendment Malcolm had tried to suppress.

Helena looked at me.

“He has the old version.”

“Yes.”

Malcolm smiled.

“The trust cannot exercise rights based on documents that were never properly filed.”

I turned toward the interim chair.

“May I submit additional evidence?”

“Yes.”

Helena placed the authenticated amendment on the table.

Malcolm's smile disappeared.

“This is a copy.”

“Certified.”

“By whom?”

“The state registry.”

He stared at the stamp.

The room changed.

The amendment was legally valid.

The protected estate block was active.

And Malcolm's challenge collapsed.

He sat back.

“You've been preparing this.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“You have.”

The meeting continued.

The board voted to preserve the trust structure.

Then the interim chair announced a second matter.

“Given the new evidence concerning historical financial misconduct, I move that Malcolm Reed be suspended from all board duties pending investigation.”

Malcolm stood.

“You cannot do this.”

“We can.”

He looked around.

“You're making a serious mistake.”

Nobody responded.

The vote passed.

Malcolm gathered his papers.

As he reached the door, he turned toward me.

“You have no idea what you're uncovering.”

“I think I do.”

“No.”

His voice dropped.

“You're uncovering something Daniel spent years trying to bury.”

I stared at him.

“What did Daniel bury?”

Malcolm smiled.

For the first time, I saw genuine fear behind his eyes.

Then he left.

Raymond arrived ten minutes later.

He had brought detectives.

The case concerning Daniel's death had been reopened.

They wanted the original files.

We gave them everything.

The traffic-camera evidence.

The recordings.

The financial documents.

The photographs.

The correspondence.

The dead-man's archive.

The detectives worked for hours.

Then one of them found something.

A vehicle maintenance record.

Malcolm's company car had been repaired the morning after Daniel's death.

The repair involved the front bumper.

I stared at the document.

“Was there an accident?”

The detective shook his head.

“We don't know.”

“Can you determine?”

“Maybe.”

The original vehicle still existed.

It had been sold twice.

But the current owner agreed to surrender it for examination.

Forensic testing began.

While we waited, Sienna sat beside me.

She was exhausted.

“Mom.”

“Yes?”

“If Dad knew all this, why didn't he tell you?”

“I don't know.”

“Maybe he was trying to protect you.”

I looked at her.

“That's what he did.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

She touched the folder.

“He was trying to protect us.”

I smiled faintly.

“Yes.”

That afternoon, Garrick's attorney requested a meeting.

I refused.

He then sent a formal statement.

Garrick denied the financial allegations.

He denied knowing about North Coast's misuse.

He claimed Sienna had attacked him first.

He claimed the board had conspired against him.

But the statement contained one unexpected admission.

He acknowledged meeting Malcolm repeatedly during the months before the Sunday dinner.

He described those meetings as “business discussions.”

Helena checked the records.

One meeting occurred on the same day Garrick accessed the deleted correspondence.

Another occurred the day before Sienna found the bank statements.

A third occurred three days before the assault.

The pattern was undeniable.

But we still needed proof of what they discussed.

That evening, Evelyn returned.

She had another recording.

“I found this after Daniel died.”

She placed an old cassette on the table.

I recognized the label.

DANIEL — MEETING.

“Where did you get it?”

“Daniel gave it to me.”

“Why didn't you mention it before?”

“Because I was afraid.”

We listened.

Daniel's voice came first.

Then Malcolm's.

Then another voice.

Miriam.

The conversation was tense.

Miriam demanded that Daniel surrender control of the trust.

Daniel refused.

Malcolm warned him that the company could be destroyed if he continued.

Daniel answered calmly.

“Then let it fall before I hand it to people who will turn it into a weapon.”

Miriam threatened him.

Daniel said he would expose everything.

The recording ended.

Sienna stared at me.

“That proves they were working together.”

“It proves they had a confrontation.”

Helena nodded.

“We still need to establish what happened afterward.”

The police arrived that night.

They had results from the vehicle examination.

The bumper contained microscopic traces consistent with Daniel's car.

Not enough to prove the entire case.

But enough to reopen the collision investigation as potentially deliberate.

Then the detective handed me another document.

A phone record.

Malcolm had called Daniel fourteen minutes before the crash.

After the crash, Malcolm called Miriam.

Then Garrick.

I read the sequence.

Three calls.

Three people.

One night.

Seven years of unanswered questions suddenly had a shape.

But one question remained.

Who had actually caused the crash?

The detective looked at me.

“We may have an answer.”

He placed one final photograph on the table.

It showed a second vehicle near the road.

Not Malcolm's.

Not Daniel's.

A vehicle registered to Miriam.

I stared at it.

Miriam had always said she was at home that night.

Now the evidence suggested otherwise.

Sienna looked at me.

“Mom.”

I folded the photograph.

“We're not finished.”
