her eyes.

Dad smiled.

The tension broke.

Not completely.

But enough.

That night, after everyone left, I placed the photograph beside the child's drawing.

House.

Four people.

Everybody stays.

I looked at it for a long time.

Then I realized something.

The little girl who drew that house had not been asking for perfection.

She had been asking for stability.

She had wanted everyone to remain together.

She had believed that if she could build the right house, nobody would leave.

That belief had followed me into adulthood.

Maybe that was why I had worked so hard.

Why I had built beautiful places.

Why I had become obsessed with creating spaces where people belonged.

Architecture had become the language of something I couldn't explain as a child.

I had spent thirty-one years answering a question I didn't know I was asking.

Can people stay?

Now I knew the answer.

Sometimes.

Sometimes they leave.

Sometimes they fail.

Sometimes they come back.

And sometimes belonging has nothing to do with whether someone stays.

The next morning, I received an email from the production company.

They wanted to film the house again.

This time, they wanted a Christmas special focused on family.

I stared at the message.

Then I closed it.

I didn't want cameras.

I didn't want strangers interpreting my family.

I wanted one Christmas without an audience.

I called my parents.

“We're not doing the show.”

My mother around.

“Yes.”

That evening, Brooke arrived with groceries.

She had gone shopping without asking our parents.

She carried bags into the kitchen.

“I bought too much.”

“You always do.”

“I’m learning.”

She began unpacking.

I watched her.

She had changed in a small way.

Not transformed.

Just started.

She wasn't waiting for someone to tell her what needed to be done.

She had noticed.

She acted.

That was enough.

A week before Christmas, my father repaired a loose hinge on the back door.

My mother planted herbs in the greenhouse.

Brooke helped me decorate.

Nobody asked whether the house looked impressive.

Nobody talked about the television show.

We were simply together.

One afternoon, my mother stood beside hadn't disappeared.

It had simply been named.

And once something had a name, it could finally be changed.

<a
