it?”

“Good.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

Brooke nodded.

“I’m glad.”

She unpacked vegetables, bread, cheese, fruit, and enough pasta to feed an entire construction crew.

“You really didn't need all this.”

“I know.”

She looked at me.

“But I wanted to bring something.”

We cooked together.

It was the first time Brooke and I had ever prepared a meal without our parents somewhere nearby.

That seemed insignificant until I noticed how naturally we moved around each other.

She chopped vegetables.

I prepared the sauce.

She tasted it.

“Needs salt.”

“You always say that.”

“Because you always need salt.”

“I don't.”

“You do.”

I added salt.

She smiled.

“Better.”

We ate at the table.

She looked at the four chairs.

“I keep thinking about Christmas.”

“So do I.”

“I feel guilty.”

“I know.”

“I don't want you to tell me I shouldn't.”

“Okay.”

She looked surprised.

“You won't?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because guilt can be useful if it teaches you something.”

She nodded.

“But it can also become another way to make everything about yourself.”

She looked down.

“That's true.”

“Your job isn't to feel terrible forever.”

“What is my job?”

“Learn.”

She nodded.

“I think I am.”

We talked for hours.

About childhood.

About our parents.

About the ways we had each interpreted the same family differently.

Brooke admitted that she had known for years that our parents would usually choose her.

“I didn't think about it as choosing you against me.”

“I know.”

“I thought it was just how families worked.”

I nodded.

“So did I.”

She looked at me.

“You really thought you weren't supposed to need anyone?”

“Yes.”

“That's awful.”

“It wasn't always awful.”

She frowned.

“It made me independent.”

“But?”

“It made me lonely.”

She reached across the table.

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

She smiled.

“You say that a lot.”

“I'm learning too.”

That afternoon, we walked to the creek.

The snow had started melting.

The old marker was still in the garage.

Brooke saw it.

“What's that?”

“The twenty-two-minute marker.”

She looked at me.

“What?”

I told her.

She stood quietly.

“I was three.”

“Yes.”

“You found me.”

“Yes.”

“I don't remember.”

“You don't have to.”

She touched the faded wood.

“Mom told me.”

“About that day?”

“Yes.”

She looked at the marker.

“I think this is why they became so protective.”

“It was part of it.”

“And why they kept choosing me.”

“Part of it.”

She looked at me.

“Did you ever hate me?”

I answered honestly.

“Sometimes.”

She nodded.

“Fair.”

“But I never hated you for being three.”

She smiled sadly.

“I appreciate that.”

We carried the marker outside.

Brooke looked at me.

“What are we doing?”

“I don't know.”

“Then why are we carrying it?”

“Because I think it's time.”

We walked to the creek.

My father had placed the marker there thirty-one years earlier.

We set it on the ground.

Neither of us said anything.

Then Brooke picked it up.

“Should we destroy it?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“Because it happened.”

She nodded.

“Then what?”

“We put it somewhere it can be remembered without controlling us.”

She agreed.

We carried it back.

I placed it on a shelf in the garage.

Not hidden.

Not displayed.

Just there.

That evening, my parents arrived.

My mother brought dessert.

My father brought a toolbox.

Brooke looked at him.

“You always bring that.”

He shrugged.

“Never know when something will break.”

My mother laughed.

“He brought it to our honeymoon.”

“That is not true.”

“It is.”

“It was a small toolbox.”

Brooke and I laughed.

We ate dinner together.

At one point, my father looked around the table.

“This is nice.”

My mother nodded.

“Yes.”

Brooke looked at me.

“It is.”

I realized something.

Nobody was trying to recreate the Christmas we had lost.

We were making a different evening.

That mattered.

After dinner, Brooke helped my mother clear the plates.

My father stayed behind with me.

“You and Brooke seem different.”

“We are.”

“How?”

“I think we're finally seeing each other.”

He nodded.

“I wish we'd helped that happen sooner.”

“Me too.”

He looked at the table.

“But you did it.”

“We both did.”

He smiled.

“That's good.”

Later, my mother came to my room.

She held an old photograph.

“Your father found this.”

It was the picture from the creek.

I looked at it.

I was holding Brooke's hand.

My face was wet with tears.

Brooke was smiling.

My mother sat beside me.

“You were so brave.”

“I was terrified.”

“I know.”

She touched the photograph.

“I think we misunderstood that day.”

“How?”

“We saw you take care of Brooke and thought you were strong.”

I nodded.

“But what we should have seen was a nine-year-old who needed someone to take care of her too.”

I looked at her.

“Yes.”

She breathed out.

“I’m sorry.”

“I know.”

She smiled.

“Still learning.”

“Me too.”

She kissed my forehead.

Then she left.

I sat alone for a while.

The photograph rested in my hands.

I had spent years believing the story of my childhood was that Brooke was the center and I was somewhere outside the circle.

But now I could see something else.

I had been inside the circle.

I had simply been standing farther from the center than I should have been.

That distinction didn't erase the loneliness.

But it gave me a different place to stand.

A week later, I received another call from the production company.

They wanted to use the house again.

This time, I said yes.

But I gave them one condition.

No family interview.

No personal questions.

The house could be shown.

My family would remain ours.

The producer agreed.

Megan teased me about becoming difficult.

“I was always difficult.”

“No.”

She smiled.

“You were accommodating.”

“Same thing.”

“Not even close.”

She was right.

I had spent years confusing accommodation with kindness.

They were not the same.

The house appeared again in a short segment.

People sent messages.

Clients called.

A developer in Charlotte asked about working with Holt Ridge.

I answered the business calls.

I ignored the compliments about the family.

There was nothing to prove.

That evening, my mother called.

“Did you see the segment?”

“Yes.”

“It looked beautiful.”

“Thank you.”

“I saw the dining table.”

“Yes.”

“You were sitting there.”

“I was.”

“Were you alone?”

“No.”

She laughed softly.

“Good.”

We talked for twenty minutes.

Before hanging up, she said, “We're coming next Sunday.”

“You are?”

“Yes.”

“You don't have to ask?”

“We're asking.”

I laughed.

“Then yes.”

When the call ended, I stood beside the dining table.

Four chairs.

Then I looked toward the hallway.

I added a fifth.

Megan saw it the next day.

“Who's coming?”

“Maybe someone.”

She smiled.

“That's mysterious.”

“It isn't.”

“Then why the extra chair?”

I looked at it.

“Because I finally understand something.”

“What?”

“A home can have room before you know exactly who will need it.”

She nodded.

“That sounds like you.”

I smiled.

Maybe that was the point.

I had spent years trying to build a home that could hold everyone.

Now I understood that the house could hold people.

I didn't have to hold them myself.

That was their responsibility too.
