unhappy.

She had been documenting.

Quietly.

Carefully.

Perhaps some part of her had been waiting for permission to admit what was happening.

I looked at her.

“How long have you been saving these?”

“Since October.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“I thought I could fix organizing everything.

There was nothing dramatic about it.

No shouting.

No slammed doors.

Just paper.

Dates.

Numbers.

Facts.

That was somehow more frightening than anger.

At noon, Emily received a call.

She looked at the answered.

“Hello?”

Her voice was cold.

“What exactly are you doing to my son?”

I looked across the table at Emily.

“Nothing.”

“You've turned Christmas into a family war.”

“I left Christmas dinner.”

“You abandoned everyone.”

“I was told I couldn't sit at my own table.”

Linda sighed.

“You misunderstood Ryan.”

“No.”

“He was is?”

“Ryan told me I make everything about ownership.”

“You do.”

“Then perhaps you can explain why your son has been asking my daughter what to do that.”

“Yes, I did.”

She smiled sadly.

“Thank you.”

That afternoon, she contacted an attorney.

I stayed in the next room while she explained what had happened.

I did not listen to every detail.

Some things belonged to her.

When she finished, she sat quietly for several minutes.

“What did they say?” I asked.

“That I should keep every document.”

“Anything else?”

“They said I shouldn't meet Ryan alone.”

I nodded.

“That makes sense.”

Emily looked down at her hands.

“I feel embarrassed.”

“Why?”

“Because I stayed.”

“Emily.”

She looked at me.

“You stayed because you loved someone and believed you could make the marriage work.”

“I should have known.”

“Knowing later is easy.”

She wiped her eyes.

“Do you hate him?”

“No.”

She looked surprised.

“I don't.”

“Why not?”

“Because hate would keep me thinking about him.”

She gave a small smile.

“What do you feel?”

“I feel finished.”

That evening, I went upstairs to check on the children.

Ava was drawing at the desk.

“What are you drawing?”

“Our house.”

I looked at the paper.

There was a large rectangle with windows, a Christmas tree, three stick figures, and a dog we did not own.

“Who's this?” I asked, pointing to the smallest figure.

“Mommy.”

“And this?”

“Me.”

“And Noah.”

She pointed to the tallest figure.

“Grandma.”

I smiled.

“Where's Dad?”

She paused.

Then she added him outside the house.

I did not comment.

Children notice more than adults want to believe.

The following morning, Ryan sent Emily another message.

I want my belongings.

Emily showed me.

“Should I tell him he can come?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because you don't need him here without someone else present.”

She nodded.

We arranged for him to collect his belongings later with another adult present.

At three o'clock, his car appeared.

He stayed outside.

A neighbor came over while Emily packed the few things that belonged to him.

He took his clothes, computer equipment, personal documents, and some kitchen items he claimed as his.

Then he stood in the doorway.

“This is ridiculous.”

Emily said nothing.

He looked at me.

“You're happy now?”

I answered calmly.

“No.”

“Looks like it.”

“I don't celebrate when families break apart.”

“You broke mine.”

I shook my head.

“No, Ryan.”

He waited.

“You did that yourself.”

His jaw tightened.

“You think you can keep this house forever?”

The question hung in the doorway.

Emily looked at me.

I looked at Ryan.

“This house was mine before you entered my family,” I said. “It will remain mine after you leave it.”

He smiled without warmth.

“We'll see.”

Then he walked away.

Emily closed the door.

Neither of us spoke for several seconds.

Finally, she whispered, “What did he mean?”

“I don't know.”

She looked toward the folder on the kitchen table.

“Do you think he's planning something?”

I looked at the documents.

Then at the closed front door.

Then back at my daughter.

“I think we should assume he is.”

That night, I went through the house alone.

Every room looked familiar.

But now I noticed things I had ignored before.

A drawer that had been emptied.

A document folder moved from my office.

A key that was no longer hanging where I kept it.

I stood in my study and opened the bottom desk drawer.

The folder containing the house deed was still there.

I touched it with my fingertips.

Then I noticed something else.

The folder was open.

And one page was missing.

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The Missing Page Was Not an Accident, and What I Found Behind the Desk
