The folder contained the deed, the property tax records, the original mortgage documents, and the closing statement from thirty-one years ago. I knew the order because I had arranged them myself after Henry died.

The missing page had been near the back.

I pulled every document out and spread them across the desk.

Nothing else was missing.

That should have reassured me.

Instead, it made the absence more deliberate.

I called Emily upstairs.

She came into the study carrying two mugs of coffee.

“What happened?”

I pointed at the desk.

“Something is missing.”

She put the mugs down.

“What?”

“A page from the property file.”

Her face changed immediately.

“Which page?”

“I don't know yet.”

She came closer.

I showed her the folder.

She examined the remaining papers one by one.

“Could it have fallen somewhere?”

“That was my first thought.”

We searched the floor, the wastebasket, the drawers, even beneath the desk.

Nothing.

Emily crouched beside the filing cabinet.

“Mom.”

“What?”

She pulled open the bottom drawer.

Inside was an envelope.

It was one I had never seen before.

The envelope had my name written across it in Henry's handwriting.

My hands went cold.

I knew that handwriting immediately.

Henry had been gone for six years, but I could still recognize every curve of those letters.

I picked up the envelope.

There was no date.

No address.

Nothing except my name.

Emily stood beside me.

“Open it.”

I slid a finger beneath the flap.

Inside was a photocopy of the property deed.

My eyes moved down the page.

Then I saw a handwritten note attached to it.

If anyone ever tells you this house belongs to them, check the original deed before you believe them.

I read it twice.

“Mom?”

I handed it to Emily.

She read silently.

Then she looked at me.

“Why would Dad write that?”

“I don't know.”

There was another line underneath.

And keep the original somewhere they cannot reach.

Emily looked toward the folder.

“The missing page.”

I nodded.

We both understood at the same time.

Someone had been looking for something.

I returned to the desk and checked the folder again.

The original deed was still there.

I ran my fingers along the paper.

Then I noticed something strange.

The photocopy in Henry's envelope was not identical to the deed I had in my hand.

The legal description was the same.

But one page was different.

I called the county recorder's office the following morning.

The clerk confirmed that the deed recorded thirty-one years earlier remained unchanged.

The house was legally mine.

There had been no transfer.

No sale.

No lien.

No ownership change.

I felt relief for exactly three seconds.

Then I asked about recent filings.

The clerk paused.

“There was an inquiry.”

“By whom?”

“I can't provide information about private inquiries.”

I thanked her and hung up.

Emily was standing in the kitchen doorway.

“Someone checked.”

“Yes.”

“Ryan?”

“I don't know.”

“But you think it was him.”

“I think we should stop assuming everything is coincidence.”

She sat down.

“I remember something.”

“What?”

“Two weeks ago, Ryan asked where you kept your legal documents.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“He said he was helping with insurance.”

“Did you tell him?”

“I said I didn't know.”

I nodded slowly.

“Good.”

Emily looked sick.

“Mom, I think he has been planning this for a while.”

“So do I.”

We spent the afternoon going through my office.

Not searching for evidence this time.

Searching for access.

Keys.

Passwords.

Documents.

Anything that could be used without my knowledge.

We discovered that one spare key to the front door was missing.

Another key opened the garage.

I had given both to Emily years ago.

She said she had never taken the garage key.

I looked at her.

“Who has been using it?”

She shook her head.

“I don't know.”

I called the locksmith.

By evening, the locks had been changed.

The locksmith asked why.

“Family problem,” I said.

He nodded as if he had heard that answer before.

After he left, Emily sat at the kitchen table staring at her phone.

“He hasn't contacted me.”

“That's probably temporary.”

She looked up.

“What do you think he'll do?”

“I don't know.”

Then her phone buzzed.

It was a message from Linda.

Emily read it and went pale.

“What?”

She handed me the phone.

Linda had written:

You need to understand that Ryan has been making arrangements. Don't force him into a corner.

I read it twice.

“Making arrangements for what?”

Emily didn't answer.

A second message arrived.

Your mother should be careful about what she thinks she owns.

My stomach tightened.

I handed the phone back.

“That sounds like a threat.”

Emily nodded.

“What do we do?”

“We document it.”

She took a screenshot.

I asked her to forward it to the attorney.

Then I went back into my study.

The missing page bothered me more than the messages.

I knew there was a reason Henry had left that envelope.

He had been cautious about legal matters.

He had never been paranoid.

If he had written that note, something must have happened before his death.

I searched through old boxes.

Receipts.

Insurance policies.

Tax returns.

Photographs.

Then, beneath a stack of Christmas cards from years ago, I found a second envelope.

This one was addressed to Henry.

The return address belonged to a law office I recognized.

I opened it.

Inside was a letter dated five years earlier.

It referred to a conversation Henry had apparently had with the attorney about protecting my ownership of the house.

The letter mentioned something called a transfer-on-death arrangement.

I read the paragraph twice.

Then I understood why Henry had been concerned.

He had been trying to ensure that the house could never become confused with family property.

He had known that someday someone might assume marriage gave them rights over it.

Emily read the letter over my shoulder.

“Dad knew.”

“He suspected.”

“About Ryan?”

“No. Ryan wasn't even married to you then.”

She looked at me.

“Then who?”

I didn't know.

That was the part that unsettled me.

The problem had begun before Ryan.

Maybe Henry had simply understood people better than we did.

That evening, Emily stayed in my guest room.

The house was quiet.

At midnight, I heard a sound downstairs.

A door closing.

I got out of bed.

I walked slowly toward the staircase.

The hallway was dark.

At the bottom, the kitchen light was on.

I stopped.

Someone was standing near the back door.

Then the figure turned.

It was Emily.

She was holding a glass of water.

“Mom?”

“You scared me.”

“Sorry.”

“What are you doing?”

“Couldn't sleep.”

I nodded.

Then I noticed something in her hand.

A small brass key.

“Where did you get that?”

She looked down.

“I found it in my old coat.”

“What does it open?”

“I don't know.”

I took the key.

It was older than the locks we had just replaced.

And stamped into the metal was a tiny number.

31.

I stared at it.

Thirty-one.

The number of years I had owned the house.

Emily whispered, “What does that mean?”

“I don't know.”

But I knew one thing.

The missing page was no longer the only thing we needed to find.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Key Marked Thirty-One Opened Something I Had Forgotten, and Inside It Was Proof That Someone Had Been Watching My Family Long Before Christmas

I stared at the empty space inside the folder.
