office had moved twice since Henry died, but the old records had been preserved.

I knew that because the receptionist recognized Henry's name when I gave it to her.

“We still have the archived file,” she said. “It may take some time to retrieve it.”

“I'll wait.”

Emily sat beside me in the reception area.

Neither of us spoke.

The photograph was in my handbag.

I had looked at it so many times that I knew every detail.

Henry standing beside the garage.

Linda beside him.

Ryan in the background.

The date written on the back.

June 3, 2021.

Three months before Henry died.

And the note in Henry's handwriting:

Ask her why she wants to know.

The receptionist returned carrying a thick gray file.

“This is everything associated with Mr. Hale's property consultation.”

I thanked her.

We were taken into a private conference room.

The attorney who had represented Henry was older now, but when he entered, he recognized me immediately.

“I was wondering when you'd come.”

I looked at him.

“You knew?”

“I knew your husband was concerned.”

“That isn't what I asked.”

He closed the door.

“I knew there were things Henry didn't want to frighten you with.”

Emily leaned forward.

“What things?”

He sat across from us.

“Your father believed someone was trying to pressure him into changing the ownership structure of the house.”

Emily looked at me.

“Who?”

“He never gave me a definitive answer.”

I placed the photograph on the table.

“Was Linda involved?”

He studied it.

Then he looked at me.

“Yes.”

The word landed heavily.

“How?”

“Linda contacted him several times.”

“Why?”

“She said she was worried about Emily.”

I almost laughed.

“About Emily?”

“She claimed that you were becoming increasingly controlling and that Emily needed financial security.”

“That is ridiculous.”

“I told Henry the same thing.”

“What did she want?”

The attorney opened the file.

“There was a proposal.”

He removed several pages.

“It was never executed.”

I recognized the formatting immediately.

It was the same agreement that had been copied and later forged.

My hands went cold.

“This.”

“Yes.”

“When was this created?”

“June 2021.”

Emily stared at the document.

“Before Dad died.”

“Yes.”

“Who prepared it?”

The attorney paused.

“A lawyer representing Linda.”

I felt a strange mixture of relief and anger.

At least we finally had a name.

“Why would Linda's lawyer prepare a transfer involving my house?”

“Linda claimed you wanted to place the property in Emily's name.”

“I never said that.”

“Henry knew.”

“How?”

“He asked you about it.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

“He said he raised the subject indirectly.”

I searched my memory.

Then I remembered.

That summer, Henry had asked me whether I had ever considered putting the house into Emily's name.

I had told him, “After you and I are gone, perhaps.”

He had nodded.

I had assumed it was a casual conversation.

It wasn't.

The attorney continued.

“Linda took your answer and presented it as an intention to transfer the property.”

My stomach tightened.

“So she lied.”

“She interpreted your general statement as authorization.”

“She had no authorization.”

“No.”

Emily looked at the document.

“Why did Dad meet her?”

“He wanted to find out what she was trying to do.”

“And Ryan?”

The attorney looked at the photograph.

“Ryan attended part of the discussion.”

The room went quiet.

“Why didn't you tell me?” I asked.

“Because Henry asked me not to.”

I stared at him.

“Why?”

“He feared that confronting them would make matters worse.”

“What did he plan to do?”

“He planned to wait until the draft disappeared.”

“What does that mean?”

“He believed Linda would lose interest if there was no cooperation.”

“But she didn't.”

“No.”

The attorney reached for another document.

“This was the last letter Henry sent me.”

I read it.

The letter was short.

He wanted confirmation that the original deed remained secure.

He wanted the draft agreement destroyed.

And he wrote one final sentence:

If they return after my death, my wife must understand that pressure is the weapon, not the paperwork.

I closed my eyes.

Henry had understood.

He had known exactly what kind of battle this would become.

“What happened to the draft?” Emily asked.

“I don't know.”

“Did you destroy your copy?”

“Yes.”

“Then how did they get another?”

The attorney looked at us.

“That is what I can't explain.”

I thought of the missing page.

The old cabinet.

Linda's visit.

Ryan's access.

The answer was probably somewhere in those three facts.

We left the office carrying certified copies of the original property records.

The forged agreement no longer frightened me.

It angered me.

There was a difference.

On the drive home, Emily was silent.

Finally, she said, “Mom.”

“Yes?”

“Dad knew they might do this after he died.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn't he tell you?”

I kept my eyes on the road.

“Maybe because he thought he could protect me by handling it himself.”

She looked out the window.

“He was wrong.”

“Yes.”

Neither of us blamed him.

Grief makes people protective in ways that sometimes create new vulnerabilities.

When we reached the house, Ryan's car was parked across the street.

I stopped.

“He's waiting.”

Emily looked frightened.

“Should we go somewhere else?”

“No.”

“Mom.”

“We're not running from our own house.”

We parked in the driveway.

Ryan stepped out.

He did not approach immediately.

Instead, he stood beside his car with his hands in his coat pockets.

Finally, he walked toward us.

“I need to talk to you.”

I stepped out.

“You can talk from there.”

He looked irritated.

“I spoke to an attorney.”

“I assumed you would.”

“He says there may be a dispute concerning the property.”

“There isn't.”

“You don't get to decide that.”

“I don't need to.”

I took the certified records from my handbag.

“The county already did.”

His face changed.

He looked at the documents.

“Where did you get those?”

“They are public records.”

He stared at me.

Then he looked at Emily.

“Your mother is trying to keep you dependent on her.”

Emily stepped forward.

“No.”

He blinked.

“She isn't.”

“Emily.”

“I saw the documents.”

“You don't understand them.”

“I understand that Mom never signed anything.”

He looked at me.

Then back at her.

“You've chosen her.”

Emily's voice was steady.

“No. I chose the truth.”

Ryan's jaw tightened.

He stepped backward.

“You'll regret this.”

I had heard those words before.

This time, they did not frighten me.

“Ryan.”

He looked at me.

“If you have anything legitimate to say, say it through the attorneys.”

He turned away.

Then stopped.

“There are things you don't know about Linda.”

I stared at him.

“What things?”

He shook his head.

“You'll find out.”

He walked away.

Emily watched him get into his car.

“What did he mean?”

“I don't know.”

But for the first time, I wondered whether Linda had been leading Ryan all along.

Maybe the two of them had not shared the same plan.

Maybe one had used the other.

And if that was true, the next conversation with Linda could change everything.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Linda Finally Told Us Why She
