long?”

“Before Henry died.”

Emily looked stunned.

“Then why did you help him?”

“I didn't.”

I almost interrupted.

She raised a hand.

“Not at first.”

That qualification mattered.

“What did you do?”

“I encouraged him to speak to your forward.

“You were alone in the study.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Linda hesitated.

“I was looking for the bathroom.”

I admission.

“Why?”

“Because Ryan asked me to.”

Emily looked devastated.

“Mom…”

“I thought it was only information.”

“It wasn't.”

“I know.”

I asked, “Did you take anything?”

“A copy.”

“Only a copy?”

“Yes.”

“The missing page?”

Linda looked at me.

“No.”

That answer came too quickly.

I watched her.

“You know about the missing page.”

She said nothing.

“Linda.”

Her hands began trembling.

“I saw Ryan take it.”

Emily closed her eyes.

“When?”

“After Henry died.”

“Why?”

“He said he needed proof.”

“Proof of what?”

“That your mother had already agreed to transfer the house.”

I leaned back.

“And he believed that page would prove it.”

“Yes.”

“Did you know the signature was forged?”

“No.”

“Did you know he planned to use it against me?”

“Not at first.”

“And later?”

She looked away.

“Yes.”

Emily stared at her.

“Why didn't you stop him?”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“After Christmas.”

I almost laughed.

“You were sitting in my chair.”

“I know.”

“You knew what was happening.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you do it?”

Linda's eyes filled with tears.

“Because Ryan told me that if I didn't cooperate, he would blame everything on me.”

The pieces shifted.

Not enough to excuse her.

Enough to explain her.

I asked, “Did he threaten you with the forged document?”

“Yes.”

“He said he would claim you created it?”

“Yes.”

Emily whispered, “So you were trapped too.”

Linda nodded.

“I made terrible choices.”

“Yes.”

She looked at me.

“I am sorry.”

I did not forgive her.

Not then.

But I believed her.

There was still one question.

“Who forged my signature?”

Linda looked at the table.

“I don't know.”

“Ryan?”

“I never saw him do it.”

“Then who?”

She whispered a name.

“His business partner.”

I stared at her.

“Why would his business partner do that?”

“Because Ryan owed him money.”

The situation had become larger than the house.

Ryan's debts.

His mother.

His business partner.

The forged document.

The pressure campaign.

The Christmas dinner.

All of it connected.

But the house remained at the center.

“What was Ryan planning to do if the document worked?” I asked.

Linda hesitated.

“He wanted you to sign a new deed.”

“To whom?”

“Emily.”

“And then?”

Linda looked at Emily.

“He wanted her to add him.”

Silence.

There it was.

The entire plan.

Make it appear that I had voluntarily transferred the property to Emily.

Then persuade Emily to add her husband.

If she refused, pressure her.

If I resisted, claim there was a dispute.

If everyone became frightened enough, force a settlement.

The chair had been a rehearsal.

A test of submission.

I stood.

“We're finished.”

Linda nodded.

Before I left, she said, “There is one more thing.”

I turned.

“Ryan doesn't know I told you.”

“Why tell me now?”

“Because I finally realized something.”

“What?”

“He never wanted the house.”

I frowned.

“He wanted what the house represented.”

“Money.”

“Control.”

She looked at Emily.

“And proof that he had won.”

Outside, Emily walked beside me.

“Do you believe her?”

“Mostly.”

“Mostly?”

“She still hasn't told us who forged the signature.”

Emily nodded.

“What do we do now?”

I looked toward the courthouse.

“We stop trying to understand Ryan.”

“And?”

“We make sure he cannot use the house against us.”

The attorney filed the necessary documents that afternoon.

The county record remained unchanged.

The forged agreement was preserved.

The messages were preserved.

Linda's statements were documented.

The evidence was becoming a wall.

For the first time, Ryan's threats felt smaller than the facts.

Then, late that evening, Emily received one final message.

It contained a photograph.

It was a photograph of my house.

Taken from across the street.

Underneath it were six words:

You don't know what Dad left behind.

Emily looked at me.

I stared at the photograph.

Henry had already left us something.

Not money.

Not property.

A warning.

And suddenly I wondered whether there was one final document we had not found.

<a
