the exciting part.”

Melissa sat down.

“You're serious about traveling.”

“Very.”

“Where first?”

“Italy.”

I laughed.

“Of course.”

Mom smiled.

“I've spent my whole life saying someday.”

She looked around the living room.

“I think someday has arrived.”

We helped her sort through the house.

That was harder than I expected.

Every drawer contained something.

Every closet had a memory.

Mom refused to keep things simply because they had history.

“Take this,” she told me.

I held up an old lamp.

“No.”

“Why not?”

“It belonged to your father.”

“I know.”

“Then you should keep it.”

She smiled.

“Your father hated that lamp.”

I laughed.

“I didn't know that.”

“He said it made the room look like a hotel.”

I kept the lamp.

Melissa took an old dining table.

Mom gave away the rest.

The house slowly became empty.

One afternoon, I found Mom sitting on the floor in her bedroom.

She was holding a photograph.

“Are you okay?”

“Yes.”

“What are you looking at?”

She handed it to me.

It was a photograph of Dad standing beside the lake.

Lake Briar.

He looked younger than I remembered.

Mom smiled.

“He wanted to retire there.”

“You time.”

I sat beside her.

“Did you?”

“No.”

She didn't say it sadly.

She said it as a fact.

Then she put the photograph into a box.

“I don't want to spend the rest of my life saying I have time.”

That sentence stayed with me.

The house sold two weeks later.

The buyer was a young couple with a small child.

Mom handed them the keys.

The woman cried.

Mom hugged her.

“Make good memories.”

When we drove away, Mom didn't look back.

I did.

Melissa did too.

Mom noticed.

“You can look.”

I smiled.

She turned toward us.

“It was a house.”

Melissa nodded.

“It was our house.”

“And now it's theirs.”

That night, Mom stayed at my house.

The next morning, we began planning Italy.

Mom wanted Rome.

Then Florence.

Then Venice.

Melissa wanted to book everything.

Mom insisted on doing some of it herself.

“You're not planning my life.”

“I'm helping.”

“You're controlling.”

“There's a difference.”

“Not with you.”

I laughed.

The trip was scheduled for six weeks later.

Mom bought a small suitcase.

Then another.

She refused to bring the larger one.

“I don't need that much.”

Melissa looked at her.

“You're going to Italy for three weeks.”

“Then I'll wash clothes.”

“You are not washing clothes in Italy.”

“Why not?”

“Because you're on vacation.”

Mom smiled.

“Exactly.”

A few days before the trip, something unexpected happened.

Melissa called me.

Her voice was tense.

“Amanda, can you come over?”

“What happened?”

“I found something.”

“What?”

“It's about the money.”

I went immediately.

Melissa was sitting at her dining table with several documents spread in front of her.

“What is this?”

She pushed one toward me.

It was a bank statement.

“Mom's account.”

I looked at the date.

“Why do you have this?”

“I found it in the folder she gave me.”

I read the balance.

Then I frowned.

“This can't be right.”

“What?”

“There's less money than I expected.”

Melissa nodded.

“Exactly.”

I looked at the statement again.

Mom had sold the house.

She had savings.

She had investments.

And yet the account showed far less than the amount I thought she should have.

“Maybe she moved it.”

“Where?”

“I don't know.”

Melissa looked worried.

“I think she gave more money away.”

“To whom?”

“I don't know.”

We sat in silence.

Then I remembered the second folder.

“Did you ask Mom?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

“I don't want to accuse her of anything.”

“Then don't.”

We went to Mom's apartment.

She was packing.

Three suitcases stood open.

She looked at us.

“You're early.”

I held up the bank statement.

“Mom.”

Her face changed.

“Where did you get that?”

“Melissa found it.”

Mom sat down.

“What do you think?”

“I think we don't understand where the money went.”

Mom sighed.

“I knew this conversation would come.”

“Then explain.”

She looked at Melissa.

“I gave some of it away.”

“To whom?”

“People who needed it.”

Melissa frowned.

“Who?”

Mom shook her head.

“That's not your concern.”

I felt frustrated.

“Mom, if it's your money, of course it's your choice.”

“Yes.”

“But if it's part of the estate plan—”

“It isn't.”

“What?”

Mom looked at me.

“Not everything I own belongs to my estate.”

That stopped me.

She continued.

“I changed the plan because I realized I was still thinking like a mother instead of a person.”

Melissa looked confused.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I can decide what to do with my money while I'm alive.”

I nodded.

She was right.

But there was something else.

“You gave money to strangers?”

“Some.”

“How much?”

Mom smiled.

“Enough.”

Melissa shook her head.

“You're impossible.”

“I learned from both of you.”

I laughed.

Mom stood.

Then she opened a drawer.

Inside were envelopes.

Several.

Each had a name.

I recognized none of them.

She picked one up.

“This woman worked with me thirty years ago.”

Another.

“His family helped your father when he was sick.”

Another.

“This couple lives down the street.”

I looked at the envelopes.

Mom wasn't giving away everything.

She was closing old circles.

“Why didn't you tell us?”

“Because I didn't want praise.”

Melissa looked down.

“I think I understand.”

Mom smiled.

“Good.”

Then she pulled out one final envelope.

It had no name.

Just a date.

The date of Dad's death.

I looked at her.

“What is that?”

Mom didn't answer.

She placed it back in the drawer.

“That's private.”

I didn't push.

But I knew something was there.

Something connected to Dad.

The next morning, Mom called me.

“I need you to do something.”

“What?”

“Come with me.”

“Where?”

“You'll see.”

She drove us to a small bank outside the city.

Melissa met us there.

Mom walked inside.

She spoke with an employee.

Then we were taken into a private office.

The manager placed a box on the table.

Mom opened it.

Inside were documents.

A deed.

Old photographs.

A letter.

And a small key.

Melissa stared.

“What's this?”

Mom looked at both of us.

“This is the part of the story I never told you.”

She placed the deed on the table.

The property description meant nothing to me.

Then I saw the location.

Lake Briar.

I looked at Mom.

“You own property there?”

She nodded.

“Your father bought it.”

“When?”

“Before he died.”

Melissa looked shocked.

“Why didn't we know?”

“Because he never finished building the house.”

I stared at her.

“You've owned land there all these years?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Mom looked at the letter.

“Because your father wanted it to become our retirement home.”

She opened the letter.

His handwriting filled the page.

He had written about growing old together.

About sitting near the lake.

About bringing us there.

About watching grandchildren run across the grass.

But there was one sentence that made Mom stop.

She couldn't read it aloud.

Melissa took the letter.

She read it.

Then covered her mouth.

I asked, “What does it say?”

Melissa looked at me.

“He wrote that if he didn't live long enough to build it, Mom should use it however she wanted.”

Mom nodded.

“That is why I kept it.”

I looked at the property deed.

“Are you going to build the house?”

Mom smiled.

“No.”

“Then why keep the land?”

She looked at us.

“Because I have an idea.”

Melissa frowned.

“What kind?”

Mom placed the key on the table.

“A place where people can stay.”

I didn't understand.

She continued.

“Women who need somewhere safe.”

Melissa stared.

“You mean a shelter?”

“Something small.”

“For whom?”

“For women starting over.”

I looked at the deed.

Mom had already thought about it.

She had contacted an architect.

She had spoken with a local nonprofit.

She had researched the costs.

This wasn't a sudden idea.

It had been developing quietly.

“You've been planning this.”

“Yes.”

“With your money?”

“Yes.”

Melissa sat back.

“And the estate?”

Mom smiled.

“Now you understand why I changed it.”

The money was no longer sitting untouched for us.

Mom was using it while she could still decide where it went.

She wasn't abandoning us.

She was choosing what her money meant.

I looked at Melissa.

She was crying.

Mom reached across the table.

“Are you angry?”

Melissa shook her head.

“No.”

“Good.”

She wiped her eyes.

“I think I'm finally proud of you.”

Mom laughed.

“You're allowed to be.”

I smiled.

For years, we had thought the birthday story was about a wealthy sister giving her mother twenty dollars.

Now I understood that the twenty dollars had only opened a door.

Behind it was a lifetime of choices.

And Mom was still making them.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The Property by the Lake Was Meant to Become Mom’s Final Gift, Until an
