Then he realized the transactions were deliberate.”

The recording crackled.

“He came to me after finding evidence connecting Vivian to the transfers.”

I looked at Ryan.

He stared at the recorder.

My father continued.

“I confronted Vivian. I arranged a place where he could remain hidden while we gathered enough evidence to expose Vivian.”

Thomas looked stunned.

“Then why was there never a record?”

“Because the person we trusted inside the legal system was compromised.”

The recording paused.

A faint click followed.

Then my father said, disappeared.

Daniel had survived.

And the missing document was still somewhere.

The question was where.

Thomas searched the desk.

He found another compartment.

Inside was a handwritten number.

42.

Nothing else.

I recognized it.

“Dad used 42 for his old storage units.”

Thomas looked at me.

“You're right.”

Ryan stepped closer.

“Vivian knew about the archive.”

“Yes.”

“She may know about the storage unit.”

“Then we move quickly.”

We left the archive with the photograph and recorder.

The police secured the building.

The storage facility was across town.

Unit 42 was locked.

My father's old key opened it.

Inside were boxes covered with dust.

Financial ledgers.

Photographs.

Legal documents.

And a tape recorder.

I stared at the recorder.

Thomas shook his head.

“Your father planned everything.”

“Not everything.”

I looked at the boxes.

“He planned for someone to survive him.”

We played the tape.

My father's voice returned.

“If you're hearing this, the archive has been compromised.”

My stomach tightened.

“The original document is not in this unit.”

Thomas frowned.

“Then why lead us here?”

“To prove who is searching.”

A pause.

“The person who knows about this unit is the person who took the bait.”

The door behind us slammed.

We turned.

The lights went out.

Ryan cursed.

Thomas reached for his phone.

A voice came from the darkness.

“Put the recorder down.”

Vivian.

I knew her voice instantly.

She stepped into the dim emergency light.

She wasn't alone.

Two men stood behind her.

My heart hammered.

“You followed us.”

Vivian smiled.

“You were always predictable when family was involved.”

I stepped forward.

“You hurt my mother.”

She looked bored.

“Your mother was weak.”

Ryan moved.

One of the men raised his arm.

I stopped him.

“Don't.”

Vivian looked at Ryan.

“You disappointed me.”

Ryan stared at her.

“You used me.”

“You allowed yourself to be used.”

He swallowed.

“You promised me money.”

“I promised you an opportunity.”

“You wanted me to steal from my wife.”

Vivian smiled.

“You married her for the same reason.”

Ryan flinched.

I felt the words hit harder than anything else.

“Did you arrange our meeting?”

Vivian looked at me.

“Yes.”

The room became silent.

Ryan lowered his head.

I stared at him.

He had known.

Not everything.

But enough.

“How much did you know?”

He looked at me.

“I knew she wanted me close to you.”

“When?”

“Before we married.”

My throat tightened.

“And you still married me.”

“I fell in love with you.”

Vivian laughed.

“Don't embarrass yourself.”

Ryan looked at her.

“You never cared about me.”

“No.”

She said it without hesitation.

“You were useful.”

I looked at the two men.

“Where is Samuel?”

Vivian's smile disappeared.

“You are asking the wrong question.”

“What is the right one?”

“Where is Daniel?”

I understood.

She wasn't searching for the document.

She was searching for the person who knew where it was.

I held up the photograph.

“Daniel is alive.”

Her face changed.

For the first time, I saw genuine fear.

Thomas whispered, “Now we know.”

Vivian looked at him.

“What?”

“The document was never the real danger.”

She stared.

“The witness was.”

Vivian turned toward the men.

“Take the photograph.”

One man stepped forward.

Ryan blocked him.

The struggle happened quickly.

A shelf fell.

Boxes crashed.

Thomas pulled me backward.

Police sirens sounded outside.

Vivian froze.

She had walked into the trap herself.

The officers entered.

One of the men surrendered.

The other ran and was caught outside.

Vivian stood still.

I watched her being handcuffed.

She looked at me.

“You have no idea what you've uncovered.”

I said nothing.

She smiled faintly.

“Ask your mother about the night your father died.”

My blood went cold.

“What does my mother know?”

Vivian was led away.

She never answered.

I turned toward Thomas.

He looked troubled.

“Your father died six years ago,” he said.

“I know.”

“Then we need to ask Margaret what she remembers.”

My phone rang.

My mother.

I answered.

Her voice was shaking.

“Sabrina?”

“Mom?”

“You need to come home.”

“Why?”

She took a breath.

“Because someone just came to the house.”

My heart stopped.

“Who?”

She whispered a
