scheduled for Saturday evening.

I arrived at Margaret's house at six forty-five.

I did not bring food.

I did not bring a gift.

I did not wear anything she could later claim I had chosen for the occasion.

I simply carried my phone and a small folder containing copies of the documents.

The house looked exactly as I remembered it.

White columns.

Trimmed hedges.

The brass knocker Daniel's father polished every Sunday.

For a moment, I was transported backward.

Then the front door opened.

Margaret stood there.

She looked me over.

“You came.”

“I was invited.”

Her eyes flicked toward the empty space beside me.

“Where is Daniel?”

“I didn't come with him.”

Her mouth tightened.

“Of course.”

She stepped aside.

I entered.

The smell of roasted meat and baked bread filled the hallway.

People were already arriving.

Voices drifted from the dining room.

Then I saw Daniel.

He was standing beside his father.

His expression changed the moment he saw me.

Not surprise.

Relief.

That told me more than anything he could have said.

He had been waiting for me.

His father, Richard, approached slowly.

He was seventy years old, broad-shouldered despite his age, with silver hair and the controlled expression of a man accustomed to having other people adjust themselves around him.

He looked at me.

“You came after all.”

“I was invited.”

He between us.

“Let's not do this tonight.”

“Do what?”

“Discuss unpleasant matters.”

I almost smiled.

“You're the word made me realize the three of them had discussed me before I arrived.

I was not a guest.

I was the subject of the evening.

Dinner began.

I sat at the far end of the table.

No one mentioned the food.

No one asked why I had not cooked.

That was strange enough.

Then Margaret raised her glass.

“To family.”

Several people echoed her.

I did not lift mine.

Daniel looked at me.

His father noticed.

Margaret's smile became rigid.

After dinner, she approached me.

“Come upstairs.”

“No.”

Her eyebrows rose.

“We need privacy.”

“I don't need privacy.”

“Please.”

I looked at Daniel.

He was watching us.

Then I noticed something else.

The study door was open.

The same room Claire had described.

The room containing the folder.

I stood.

“Fine.”

Margaret led me down the hallway.

But instead of going upstairs, she turned toward the study.

My heart began beating faster.

Inside, a folder rested on the desk.

My name was written across it.

Margaret closed the door behind us.

“You've been asking questions,” she said.

“Yes.”

“You shouldn't.”

“Why?”

She placed both hands on the desk.

“Because there are things you don't understand.”

“Then explain them.”

She looked at me for a long moment.

Then she opened the folder.

Inside were bank statements, contracts, and several pages bearing my name.

She pushed the top document toward me.

“This is why you need to cooperate.”

I looked down.

The document described a transfer.

The same transfer Claire had mentioned.

The amount was enormous.

And beside the authorization line was my forged signature.

I looked up.

“I didn't sign this.”

Margaret's face remained calm.

“You don't remember signing
