Somewhere downstairs, a cabinet closed softly. Water ran through the pipes. Then I heard Virginia's footsteps crossing the hallway.

For a few seconds, I considered staying upstairs.

Instead, I got dressed and went to the market.

I wasn't going to cook defensively. I wasn't going to prepare some enormous meal designed to prove my worth. I simply wanted to make the kind of dinner I would normally serve when people I cared about came to our house.

I bought a pork loin, fresh rosemary, garlic, oranges, tomatoes, greens, bread, cheese, and a small piece of salmon for an appetizer. At the checkout, I looked at the bags and almost laughed.

I had no idea why I suddenly felt as though I were preparing for an examination.

Back home, I cleared the counter and began working.

The pork went into a bowl with crushed garlic, rosemary, black pepper, orange juice, and olive oil.
