Justin was still asleep upstairs, and I was standing barefoot on the cool tile, deciding whether we had enough eggs for breakfast.

My phone rang.

I saw Virginia's name.

“Good morning.”

“Good morning, Chloe.”

Her voice sounded lighter than it had during the weeks of appointments.

“How are you feeling?”

“Tired.”

“That sounds expected.”

“I suppose.”

There was a pause.

Then she said, “I have a question.”

“Go ahead.”

“Do you still have that old recipe for the chicken you made when Brenda visited?”

I smiled.

“The one you called dry?”

Virginia laughed.

“I have admitted defeat on that matter.”

“You did.”

“I want to make it for Walter.”

“Why?”

“He keeps telling everyone that your cooking changed my standards.”

I leaned against the counter.

“That's actually sweet.”

“Don't tell him I said that.”

We talked for nearly twenty minutes.

She asked about the marinade. I explained it. She wrote down the ingredients.

Before hanging up, she said something that stayed with me.

“I like calling you.”

I smiled.

“I like when you call.”

“Even when I ask about chicken?”

“Especially then.”

She laughed.

After we hung up, Justin came downstairs.

“Mom?”

“Yes.”

“What did she want?”

“The chicken recipe.”

He smiled.

“She likes that recipe.”

“She used to hate it.”

“She used to hate a lot of things.”

I laughed.

Then Justin opened the refrigerator and frowned.

“We're out of eggs.”

“I know.”

“You just said we had enough.”

“I changed my mind.”

He looked at me.

“Mom's influence.”

“Don't start.”

We went grocery shopping together.

It was ordinary.

That was what made it feel so precious.

There was no crisis.

No argument.

No hidden conversation.

Just two people pushing a cart through a grocery store while debating whether we really needed three kinds of cheese.

For several weeks, the rhythm continued.

Virginia followed her treatment plan.

Walter accompanied her to appointments.

Brenda called often.

Justin and I visited whenever we could.

Virginia became more willing to accept help, although she still complained whenever someone carried a bag for her.

“I can lift that.”

“I know,” Justin would say.

“Then why are you taking it?”

“Because I want to.”

She would roll her eyes.

But she let him.

That was progress.

One evening, Virginia called while I was cooking.

“Are you busy?”

“I'm making dinner.”

“What are you making?”

“Pasta.”

“Which kind?”

I smiled.

“Why?”

“I'm collecting evidence.”

“Evidence of what?”

“That you really can cook.”

I laughed.

“You're impossible.”

“I know.”

Then her voice became quieter.

“Can I ask you something serious?”

“Of course.”

“Do you ever worry that I will go back to being the woman I was?”

The question surprised me.

I turned down the stove.

“Sometimes.”

She sighed.

“I appreciate the honesty.”

“But I don't expect you to be perfect.”

“That's not what I'm asking.”

“I know.”

I leaned against the counter.

“I think everyone can fall back into old habits when they're frightened.”

“That sounds right.”

“But now we know what the old habit looks like.”

She was quiet.

“And if you start moving my towels again?”

“I'll ask.”

“If you criticize my cooking?”

“I'll eat somewhere else.”

I laughed.

“You've learned.”

“I have.”

Then she said,

“And if I'm afraid?”

I answered without hesitation.

“You call.”

She took a breath.

“Okay.”

After we ended the call, I stood in the kitchen for a while.

I thought about how much had changed.

The first time Virginia had called me, she had wanted to know what Justin was eating.

Now she called because she was afraid.

The difference mattered.

A month later, Virginia came for another appointment.

This time she arrived alone with Walter.

She walked into the house carrying a small overnight bag.

“I brought my own towels.”

I laughed.

“Why?”

“I don't want to interfere with your system.”

“You can use my towels.”

“I know.”

She smiled.

“I brought them anyway.”

Walter shook his head.

“She packed for a two-day trip like she's moving across the country.”

Virginia ignored him.

That evening, we ate outside.

The weather was cool.

The four of us sat around the patio table while Justin grilled vegetables.

Virginia watched him.

“You're getting better.”

Justin looked at her.

“Thank you.”

She glanced at me.

“I taught him.”

“You absolutely did not.”

“I taught him something.”

“What?”

“How to argue.”

Justin laughed.

Walter raised his glass.

“That skill was already there.”

The evening passed easily.

After dinner, Virginia helped me clear the table.

She stopped beside the kitchen doorway.

“Do you remember the first night?”

“Yes.”

“I thought you hated me.”

“I was angry with you.”

“That's different?”

“Very.”

She nodded.

“I think I needed to hear that.”

“Why?”

“Because I assumed anger meant rejection.”

I looked at her.

“It doesn't.”

She smiled.

“I'm learning.”

Later that night, Justin and I sat together on the sofa.

“She's different,” he said.

“Yes.”

“Do you trust her?”

I considered the question.

“Yes.”

“Completely?”

I smiled.

“Trust isn't a switch.”

He nodded.

“That sounds like something Mom would say now.”

“She has been influencing me.”

He laughed.

Then he became serious.

“I never thanked you.”

“For what?”

“For not making me choose.”

I looked at him.

“That was never my goal.”

“I know.”

He took my hand.

“But I know what it could have become.”

I squeezed his fingers.

“You chose your own way.”

“So did you.”

We sat quietly.

Upstairs, the house was still.

The following morning, Virginia left early for her appointment.

When she returned, she was carrying a folder.

She placed it on the counter.

“Everything is okay.”

I smiled.

“That's good.”

“Yes.”

She sat down.

“The doctor says the treatment is working.”

I felt relief spread through me.

“That's wonderful.”

Virginia nodded.

Then she looked at me.

“I was thinking about something on the way home.”

“What?”

“I want to do something for you.”

“You don't have to.”

“I know.”

She smiled.

“I want to.”

I waited.

“I want to invite everyone to our house for Thanksgiving.”

I laughed.

“Everyone?”

“Brenda, Frank, you, Justin, Walter.”

“That sounds like a lot.”

“It will be.”

She looked nervous.

“I want to cook.”

I stared at her.

“You?”

“Yes.”

“Are you sure?”

“No.”

I laughed.

Virginia laughed too.

“But I want to try.”

There was something brave about the way she said it.

Not because cooking was difficult.

Because she was choosing to create something instead of control it.

“Then we'll come,” I said.

She smiled.

“Good.”

But when she left that afternoon, I noticed something she had forgotten.

The folder from the doctor's office.

I picked it up.

I wasn't going to read it.

Then I saw the last page.

There was a handwritten note.

It wasn't medical information.

It was a list.

Names.

Phone numbers.

And beneath them, one sentence.

“If something happens, call Chloe first.”

I stared at the page.

I understood what it meant.

Virginia had finally decided that needing someone was not the same as losing herself.

And somehow, she had chosen me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10:
