I heard her car pull into the driveway, but she didn't come inside.

My mother went out to meet her.

They talked beside the garage for nearly twenty minutes.

I watched from the upstairs window.

Neither woman looked toward the house.

Neither looked toward my bedroom.

They stood close together, speaking in low voices.

Then Claire touched Mom's arm.

My mother shook her head.

Claire said something.

Mom answered.

Claire suddenly looked toward the upstairs window.

I stepped away before she could see me.

The next morning, I woke to twenty-three unread messages in the family group chat.

The first came from my aunt Denise.

*Hope everyone had a good weekend!**

Then my cousin Mark had posted three photographs from the lake.

The children were standing near the dock.

Claire's husband, Daniel, was grilling beside the cabin.

Grandma Helen was sitting in a folding chair beneath a red umbrella.

Everyone looked happy.

Everyone except one person who wasn't there.

Ethan.

I scrolled through the pictures.

Then I stopped.

In the second photograph, there was a cooler beside the cabin.

On top of it sat a framed photograph.

It showed my mother holding a baby.

I enlarged the image.

The baby looked familiar.

Not because I recognized the child.

Because I recognized the blanket.

It was the same pale green knitted blanket my grandmother had kept in an old cedar chest for years.

I had seen it once when I was a teenager.

I had asked whose it was.

Mom had told me it belonged to someone who wasn't around anymore.

I had never questioned her.

Now I did.

I saved the photograph.

Then I called Claire.

She answered on the fourth ring.

“What?”

“Who is the baby in that picture?”

Silence.

“Claire.”

“I answered anything.

Because Claire sounded frightened.

“Who is he?”

She whispered something.

I couldn't hear it.

“Claire?”

“I said I can't talk about this.”

“You can.”

“No. I can't.”

“Then I'll ask kitchen staring at the phone.

For years, I had believed my mother was the steady center of our family.

Now both of her daughters were telling me, in different ways, that she was hiding something.

I went to the cedar chest in the attic.

It had belonged to my grandmother.

Mom had kept it locked for as long as I could remember.

The key was usually on her key ring.

But three months earlier, after she had misplaced her purse, she had given me a spare key to the house.

I had never tried it.

That morning, I did.

The lock opened.

Inside were blankets, old Christmas decorations, photographs, letters, and a stack of yellowed hospital papers.

I started searching.

Not because I knew what I was looking for.

Because I had finally accepted that something was there.

At the bottom, beneath a folded quilt, I found a small envelope.

My mother's handwriting was on the front.

*For Claire.**

I sat down on the attic floor.

My first instinct was to put it back.

Then I remembered Ethan standing in the driveway.

I opened it.

There were two photographs inside.

One showed my mother in a hospital bed.

She looked much younger.

The other showed Claire as a toddler.

A baby was lying beside her.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written a date.

I recognized it immediately.

It was six months before I was born.

I turned the photograph over again.

There was a name.

*Benjamin.**

My heart began pounding.

I knew my family history.

Or I thought I did.

Claire was four years older than me.

I was the youngest daughter.

There had never been a brother.

At least, that was what I'd been told.

I carried the photographs downstairs.

My mother was in the kitchen.

She saw them.

Her face went white.

“Where did you get those?”

“The
