following afternoon.

Her name was Rebecca Bell.

She lived less than an hour away.

Daniel had known her for years without realizing who she was.

That fact seemed almost impossible.

Yet after everything we had uncovered, impossibility had stopped meaning very much.

Rebecca opened the door herself.

She was in her early thirties, with dark hair pulled into a loose knot and a tired expression that suggested we had interrupted her work.

When she saw Daniel, she froze.

“Daniel?”

He nodded.

“Can we talk?”

Her eyes moved to Claire.

Then to me.

“About what?”

Daniel held up the birth certificate.

Her closer.

“What else did she say?”

Rebecca walked to a bookshelf.

She removed an old notebook.

“My mother wrote things down when she couldn't tell me.”

She opened it.

Most pages contained names and dates.

Then she stopped.

“This.”

The page contained a hospital room number.

A date.

And two names.

Benjamin Carter.

And an infant identified only by a number.

The same number from the hospital bracelet.

I felt didn't say.”

Daniel looked at the notebook.

“There has to be more.”

Rebecca turned several pages.

Then stopped.

“There is.”

She showed us another entry.

*Helen knows.**

Claire sat down.

“Mom.”

The next line read:

*She saw the switch.**

I looked at Rebecca.

“What switch?”

She shook her head.

“I don't know.”

Daniel looked at me.

“We need to ask Helen.”

“We already did.”

“No. We need to ask her about the babies.”

We returned to my mother's house.

She was sitting at the kitchen about the babies?”

Helen looked at Daniel.

Then at me.

“I hoped this day would never come.”

Rebecca's voice hardened.

“You owe me the truth.”

Helen nodded.

“Yes.”

She sat down.

“I saw Maria switch the bracelets.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Claire whispered, “Which babies?”

Helen looked at me.

“One was Benjamin.”

“And the other?”

“A baby whose mother had died during childbirth.”

I felt my stomach drop.

“Whose baby?”

Helen looked at Rebecca.

“Maria's daughter.”

Rebecca went completely still.

“No.”

Helen continued.

“Maria had been trying to hide the fact that her daughter had been born under another woman's name.”

Rebecca shook her head.

“I don't understand.”

“Your mother had been afraid your biological father would take you.”

“Who was my biological father?”

Helen looked at Daniel.

“Our father.”

Rebecca's breath caught.

“But I was born after Benjamin.”

“Yes.”

“Then how could I have been there that night?”

“You weren't.”

Helen's voice broke.

“The bracelet belonged to you, but it wasn't on you.”

Silence.

Daniel stared at her.

“Then whose wrist was it on?”

Helen looked at me.

I felt my blood run cold.

“Benjamin.”

I couldn't speak.

Claire whispered, “Why would Maria put Rebecca's bracelet on Benjamin?”

“To make the records impossible to trace.”

“Why?”

“Because your father wanted Benjamin gone.”

I stood.

“What does that mean?”

Helen finally said the words we had been waiting for.

“Your father didn't want Benjamin to inherit anything.”

I stared at her.

“Anything?”

“He had discovered that Benjamin was not his biological son.”

The room went silent.

Claire looked horrified.

“What?”

Helen nodded.

“Your father believed Maria's husband was Benjamin's biological father.”

Daniel looked at her.

“That doesn't make sense.”

“It does if your father was trying to erase a child he believed was not his.”

I shook my head.

“Then why did he list himself as the father?”

“To protect the family name.”

“Why would Maria help him?”

“She was afraid.”

“Of him?”

“Yes.”

Rebecca began crying.

“My whole life was built on a lie.”

Helen reached for her.

Rebecca stepped away.

“No.”

She looked at me.

“Does that mean Benjamin might still be alive?”

Helen didn't answer.

That silence was enough.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Mom.”

She looked at him.

“Is he?”

Helen's lips trembled.

“I don't know.”

I felt my knees weaken.

After thirty years, the word “dead” suddenly seemed less certain.

Claire grabbed the table.

“You told us he died.”

“I believed he did.”

“But you never saw a body.”

“No.”

“And you never saw a burial.”

“No.”

“Then why did you let us mourn him?”

Helen looked at her daughter.

“Because your father made me.”

Daniel turned away.

Rebecca wiped her face.

Then she said quietly, “There is something else.”

We all looked at her.

“My mother kept one final envelope.”

“Where?”

“She told me never to open it unless someone came looking for Benjamin.”

I felt my pulse rise.

“Do you have it?”

Rebecca nodded.

She reached into her bag and removed a sealed envelope.

The handwriting on it was Maria's.

On the front were six words.

*For the family who lost him.**

Claire stared.

“Open it.”

Rebecca hesitated.

Then she tore the envelope open.

Inside was a single photograph.

A baby.

Older than a newborn.

Maybe several months old.

The child was sitting in someone's lap.

His eyes were unmistakable.

My mother made a sound behind us.

Rebecca turned the photograph over.

On the back was a date.

It was three months after Benjamin's supposed death.

And beneath the date was an address.

I knew the address.

Everyone in the room did.

It belonged to the lake house where Claire had taken the family that weekend.

The place where three empty seats had started all of this.

Claire whispered, “No.”

I looked at the photograph again.

The baby was alive.

And someone in our family had known exactly where he had been.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Address at the Lake House Forced Us Back to
