photograph, not the address.”

I looked at the back again.

The handwriting was unmistakably Maria's.

The address belonged to the lake house Claire had rented for the family weekend.

The same place where she had told me there was no room for Ethan.

The same place where three empty seats had sat inside her minivan.

Suddenly, the exclusion was.”

“When?”

“Before your father bought the property.”

I looked at Claire.

“You never mentioned it.”

“Because I didn't know.”

My mother walked to the cabinet and took out an old key.

It was brass, darkened with age.

She placed it on the table.

“Your father kept the guesthouse locked.”

“Why?”

“Because he used it for something he didn't want us to see.”

Daniel picked up the me.”

I took it from Daniel.

The number stamped into the metal matched a tiny marking on Maria's photograph.

Seven.

Claire stared at it.

“The it.”

“You weren't supposed to.”

I felt the weight of the moment.

We had been standing around a photograph of a baby, and somehow the lake house had become the center of everything.

“Then we go there,” I said.

My mother shook her head.

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because whoever kept that me.

“I'll drive.”

We left within the hour.

Ethan stayed with Mrs. Parker.

Before I left, I knelt beside him.

“I might be gone for a while.”

“Are you going to Grandma's?”

“No.”

“Then where?”

I hesitated.

“I'm trying to find an answer.”

He studied my face.

“About the baby?”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“Okay.”

Then he reached into his pocket and handed me his little blue notebook.

“I drew something.”

Inside was a rough drawing of the photograph he had seen.

A baby.

A window.

And a person standing outside.

“Who's that?”

Ethan shrugged.

“Uncle Daniel.”

I looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“He told me.”

I closed the notebook.

“We'll talk later.”

The drive to the lake house took almost two hours.

Nobody spoke much.

Claire drove.

Daniel sat beside her.

Rebecca and I were in the back.

My mother sat beside me, staring through the window.

Eventually, I asked her the question I had been times?”

“Twice.”

“Why?”

“He said he needed somewhere quiet.”

“To do what?”

My mother shook her head.

“I didn't know.”

Rebecca spoke.

“My mother knew.”

We all looked at her.

“She wrote about the lake house.”

“What did she say?”

Rebecca opened her notebook.

“She said Benjamin was taken there after the hospital.”

Claire turned.

“Taken there alive?”

Rebecca nodded.

My mother closed her eyes.

“I didn't know that.”

“You knew the house was involved.”

“I knew my husband used it.”

“That isn't the same thing.”

“I know.”

When we reached the property, the main cabin looked exactly as it had in Claire's photographs.

The dock stretched into the lake.

The red umbrella was folded beside the porch.

The driveway curved through the trees.

Claire parked.

Nobody got out.

Then Daniel pointed.

“There.”

Behind the main cabin, partly hidden by overgrown bushes, stood a small wooden structure.

The guesthouse.

The windows were boarded.

The door was secured by an old lock.

I took out the brass key.

It fit.

The lock opened with a heavy click.

The smell inside was stale wood and dust.

There was a narrow bed.

A small table.

An old heater.

And a cabinet against the far wall.

Rebecca moved toward it.

“My mother wrote about this room.”

“What did she say?”

“That she was told never to open the cabinet.”

I pulled it open.

Inside were folders.

Photographs.

Medical papers.

And a small cassette recorder.

Claire picked up the first folder.

Her hands began shaking.

“Benjamin.”

The name was written across the front.

I opened it.

Inside were medical records.

Not hospital copies.

Originals.

The first page confirmed something we already knew.

Benjamin had been born with a serious heart condition.

The second page was different.

It listed a transfer.

*Patient transferred from St. Mary's Pediatric Wing to private residence.**

I stared at the destination.

The lake house.

Claire whispered, “He was brought here.”

My mother covered her mouth.

The next page contained a doctor's signature.

Then another document.

A handwritten note.

*Child stable. Continue observation. Do not notify family until instructed.**

Daniel looked at me.

“Who signed it?”

I pointed.

The signature belonged to Maria Bell.

Rebecca began crying.

“She kept him alive.”

“Maybe,” I said.

“No,” my mother whispered.

We looked at her.

“She didn't just keep him alive.”

“What do you mean?”

My mother pointed toward the final page.

“Look at the date.”

It was three months after Benjamin's supposed death.

The same date as the photograph.

Benjamin had not merely survived the hospital.

Someone had been caring for him.

And someone had been hiding him.

Claire found another document.

It was a property record.

The guesthouse had been rented under a false name.

My father's name wasn't listed.

Neither was Maria's.

But the tenant's name was there.

Rebecca stared at it.

“That's my mother's handwriting.”

“No,” Daniel said.

“It is.”

I looked closer.

The signature belonged to someone else.

Someone we knew.

Someone who had been at the lake house that weekend.

Claire slowly looked at me.

“Who?”

I pointed to the signature.

Daniel's face went white.

It was his.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: Daniel’s Signature Was on the Guesthouse Lease, but His Explanation Revealed Why He Had Spent Years Searching for the Child

For several seconds, nobody moved.
