Do not let the money decide how you feel about me, your mother, or yourself.

Lucille wiped her cheek.

Harold explained that he had spent years watching people become different when they discovered what Meridian was worth.

Some became generous.

Some became suspicious.

Some became entitled.

Some became frightened.

He did not want his daughter to be raised inside that atmosphere.

He wanted her to know the value of work before she knew the value of wealth.

But there was another reason.

Harold wrote that Edna's founder rights had attracted unwanted attention from people who believed ownership could be taken if enough pressure was applied.

Martin Vale had been the most persistent.

The family needed a structure that could survive both Harold and Edna.

Lucille read slowly.

The founder trust was designed to accomplish three things.

Protect Edna.

Protect the original technology.

And prevent Lucille from receiving wealth simply because she was born into the family.

Then she reached the paragraph about the test.

The hundred dollars was never meant to determine whether Lucille deserved money.

It was meant to determine whether she could recognize dignity when money was absent.

Lucille closed her eyes.

She had failed.

But then she read the next paragraph.

If she fails, do not punish her forever.

Lucille's eyes widened.

Edna looked at her.

“What does it say?”

Lucille continued reading.

A cruel answer in one moment does not define an entire life. If she fails, give her time. Let her understand what happened. Then give her another opportunity to choose differently.

Lucille looked up.

“But the money was transferred.”

Robert nodded.

“The first trust was.”

“Then Dad didn't want me permanently disinherited.”

“No.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Edna's eyes filled.

“Because I was instructed not to.”

Lucille read the next page.

Harold had written that the $260 million should be transferred to a charitable foundation if Lucille failed the first test.

But he had also created a second path.

The founder trust would remain protected.

If Lucille later demonstrated that she understood the difference between dependence and compassion, Edna could choose whether to transfer her founder interest.

Lucille stared at the sentence.

“Choose?”

Edna nodded.

“It was always my decision.”

Lucille lowered the letter.

“So you never had to give it to me.”

“No.”

“You could keep it.”

“Yes.”

“Or give it away.”

“Yes.”

“Then why did you bring me here?”

“Because I wanted you to know the truth before I made the decision.”

Lucille looked at her.

That answer hurt in a different way.

For the first time, she understood that her mother was not guarding a fortune from her.

She was guarding a choice.

Robert read the final section.

Harold had written that if Lucille reached the founder records, she should be given one last opportunity.

Not a test.

Not a trick.

A conversation.

He wanted Edna to ask Lucille what she intended to do with the knowledge.

Not the money.

The knowledge.

Lucille looked at the old engineering drawings.

“What would you have wanted me to say?”

Robert shook his head.

“That is for you.”

Lucille sat down.

She thought about the previous two days.

The hundred dollars.

The insult.

The trust.

The foundation.

The old photographs.

Martin Vale.

Her father's secret.

Her mother's sacrifices.

And the woman she had believed was weak because she lived quietly.

“I don't know what I would have said yesterday.”

Edna nodded.

“But I know what I would say now.”

“What?”

“I was wrong.”

Edna looked at her.

“I don't mean only about the money.”

Lucille continued.

“I was wrong about you.”

Her mother's eyes filled.

“I thought because you didn't have a paycheck that mattered to me, you didn't have a life that mattered.”

Edna looked down.

“I thought I was supporting you.”

“I know.”

“But I was measuring everything.”

“Yes.”

“And I hurt you.”

“Yes.”

Lucille swallowed.

“I don't want the founder trust if having it means becoming the person Dad was afraid I would become.”

Edna looked up.

“What would you do with it?”

Lucille thought.

“I don't know yet.”

“That is an honest answer.”

“I would need to learn.”

Edna smiled faintly.

“That's what your father wanted.”

Peter had been silent throughout the conversation.

Now he spoke.

“My father spent his entire life believing money was proof that he had won.”

Lucille looked at him.

“He died with almost nothing he trusted.”

Peter glanced at the documents.

“I found his private notes.”

“What did they say?”

“He regretted what he did to your family.”

Edna looked surprised.

Peter continued.

“He believed he had been cheated.”

“By Dad?”

“Yes.”

“Was he?”

Peter shook his head.

“Not in the way he thought.”

Robert nodded.

“The documents show that Vale received exactly what he agreed to receive.”

Peter looked down.

“He spent years fighting something that was never his.”

Lucille looked at him.

“What about you?”

Peter smiled sadly.

“I don't want any of it.”

Edna studied him.

“Why?”

“Because I watched my father spend his life chasing a company he didn't build.”

He closed the document case.

“I'd rather build my own.”

The sentence affected Lucille more than she expected.

Maybe that was what her father had wanted.

Not wealth.

Choice.

Daniel gathered the documents.

“There is still one legal issue.”

Lucille sighed.

“Of course.”

“The founder trust requires a final valuation and independent confirmation of the intellectual-property chain.”

“How long?”

“Several weeks.”

Edna nodded.

“Then we wait.”

Lucille looked at the letter again.

“There is something else.”

“What?”

Harold's final paragraph.

She read it aloud.

Do not give her the fortune because she passed a test. Give it to her only if, after knowing the truth, she still wants the responsibility.

Lucille folded the letter.

She looked at her mother.

“I do want the responsibility.”

Edna's expression remained unreadable.

“Why?”

“Because it belongs to the work you did.”

“That isn't an answer.”

Lucille smiled through tears.

“Then because I don't want the work to disappear.”

Edna's face softened.

“What work?”

Lucille touched the engineering drawings.

“Yours.”

For the first time, Edna smiled without restraint.

But Robert interrupted gently.

“There is still one final document.”

Lucille looked at him.

“Another one?”

“Yes.”

He removed a certificate from the folder.

It showed the current valuation of the founder interest.

Lucille stared at the number.

She had expected another fortune.

She had not expected this.

The founder interest was worth substantially more than the $260 million that had already been transferred.

Lucille looked at her mother.

Edna said nothing.

The number was enormous.

But after everything she had learned, it no longer felt like the center of the story.

It felt like a responsibility waiting to be named.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: Edna Finally Named the Price of Her Silence, and Lucille Had to Decide Whether She Wanted Wealth or the Work Behind It

Robert handed the letter to Lucille.
