I almost let it go to voicemail. Then I saw the school’s number and answered.

“Mrs. Carter?”

“Yes?”

“This is Emma’s teacher. I need you to come to the school right away.”

The chair scraped backward as I stood. “Is Emma hurt?”

“No. She’s physically fine.”

The pause that followed was too long.

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Then what happened?”

Her voice dropped. “It’s about the man who picks her up.”

For several seconds, I couldn’t breathe properly.

There was only one man she could mean.

Travis.

I had known him for most of my life. My husband, Ryan, had known him for years too. But knowing someone and trusting them were clearly two different things in Ryan’s mind.

I grabbed my purse, told my supervisor I had a family emergency, and hurried toward the parking lot. I barely remembered the drive to Emma’s elementary school. Every red light seemed to last twice as long, and every possible explanation that crossed my mind was worse than the one before it.

Three weeks earlier, I would have laughed if someone had told me Travis would become the source of a family crisis.

To most people, he looked like trouble before he ever opened his mouth.

He was thirty-six, six-foot-four, broad enough to make doorways look narrow, with tattoos running from his wrists up beneath the sleeves of his black shirts. He rode a motorcycle, wore a weathered leather vest, and played bass in a local band on weekends.

The first time Ryan met him, he watched Travis cross our driveway and muttered, “That guy looks like he could break someone in half.”

I had laughed.

“You’ve known him for six years.”

“That doesn’t make him less intimidating.”

What Ryan never seemed able to see was the man underneath the appearance.

Travis had fixed my first car when I was seventeen. He had refused payment because he knew my mother was struggling after my father died. When a pipe burst under my mother’s kitchen sink years later, Travis had spent half a Saturday replacing it. When my car battery died in a grocery-store parking lot during a thunderstorm, he appeared before I could finish calling roadside assistance.

He had simply been there.

Not in an intrusive way. Not demanding anything.

Just there.

So when my work schedule changed and Emma needed someone to walk her home from school, Travis was the one who offered.

The problem was that Ryan never liked the idea.

Our daughter, Emma, was seven. She was old enough to be fiercely independent and young enough to believe that every adult she loved possessed some special ability.

Her school ended at three.

My old department had allowed me to leave early and finish work from home. After I transferred, that arrangement disappeared. Ryan worked across town and usually couldn't get home until after six.

For nearly two weeks, we survived on after-school care, favors from other parents, and increasingly desperate scheduling.

One evening, Ryan suggested his sister.

“Melissa could pick her up.”

I looked over my shoulder.

He already knew my answer.

“Melissa?”

“She loves Emma.”

“She also once arrived forty minutes late because she stopped for coffee.”

“That happened once.”

“Twice.”

He frowned.

Then we remembered the babysitting incident.

Melissa had let Emma watch a horror movie because Emma had promised she wouldn't get scared.

Emma slept in our bed for four nights afterward and refused to look at the balloon aisle in the grocery store.

Ryan sighed.

“Fine. We keep looking.”

The next afternoon, I was standing beside my car, complaining to my mother over the phone about childcare costs, when I noticed Travis leaning against his fence.

He waited until I hung up.

“What time does Emma get out?”

“Three.”

He nodded toward the road.

“My rehearsal place is two blocks from her school. I finish early most afternoons. I could walk her home.”

I stared at him.

“You?”

He glanced down at his black vest.

“What? I look trustworthy.”

“You look like the person parents warn their children about.”

He smiled.

“Good point. I’ll wear a tiara.”

I laughed despite myself.

But we did everything properly.

The school copied his identification. I filled out the authorization forms. Travis was added to the approved pickup list. There was nothing secretive about it.

Emma was thrilled.

Ryan was not.

That first evening, while I was drying dishes, he leaned against the kitchen counter.

“I don't want our daughter depending on some biker every afternoon.”

I put the towel down.

“He's not some biker. He's Travis.”

“I know who he is.”

“Then what exactly is the problem?”

Ryan looked away.

“You trust people too easily.”

That answer bothered me more than I admitted.

Still, I told myself he was being protective.

Emma was our only child. Ryan worried about everything. He checked the locks twice at night. He called if I was five minutes late. He once spent an entire weekend researching whether a playground surface met safety standards.

So I let the argument die.

For the next three weeks, Travis walked Emma home every afternoon.

Nothing went wrong.

In fact, everything went better than expected.

Emma came through the front door full of stories.

“Travis showed me how the engine works.”

“Travis says crows can remember people.”

“Travis can whistle without putting his fingers in his mouth.”

Ryan would nod while eating dinner.

Sometimes he even smiled.

But I noticed something else.

Whenever Emma said Travis’s name too enthusiastically, Ryan’s expression changed.

It was brief.

A tightening around the mouth.

A pause before he answered.

A look toward the window when Travis’s motorcycle came into the driveway.

I noticed.

I just didn't know what it meant.

Then Tuesday came.

By the time I reached the school office, my hands were cold despite the warm afternoon.

Emma’s teacher was waiting for me.

“Mrs. Carter, thank you for coming.”

“Where is she?”

“She’s with the principal.”

My stomach dropped.

“Why?”

Her teacher hesitated.

“There was a problem with pickup.”

I looked through the glass panel in the office door.

I saw Emma first.

Then Travis.

And then someone I absolutely did not expect to see there.

Melissa.

Emma sat in a chair with her arms folded tightly across her chest. Travis stood several feet away, his face unusually hard. Melissa looked nervous.

I pushed open the door.

“Emma.”

She immediately stood and ran to me.

I dropped to my knees.

“Are you okay?”

She nodded against my shoulder.

“I’m fine, Mommy.”

I held her tighter.

Then I looked at the principal.

“What happened?”

He motioned toward the chair.

“Please sit down.
