Emma came running out between them, talking before she had even reached the sidewalk.

“Daddy, guess what?”

Ryan smiled.

“What?”

“I got a hundred on my spelling test.”

He looked genuinely proud.

“That's my girl.”

Travis raised his hand.

“High five.”

Emma slapped his palm.

“Travis, I got every word right.”

“I know. He began asking Emma about school without turning the conversation into an interrogation. If she mentioned Travis, he didn't tense up. If she wanted Travis to see something she had made, Ryan didn't treat it as evidence of disloyalty.

It was imperfect, but it was real.

Still, I noticed something strange on Wednesday.

When I arrived at the school to pick Emma up, her teacher was standing near the gate.

She smiled at me.

Then her expression became more serious.

“Could I speak with you for a minute?”

My stomach tightened automatically.

“Is Emma okay?”

“She is.”

I followed her a few steps away from the other parents.

“There has been a man around the school several times this week.”

I looked toward the parking lot.

“What man?”

“We don't know his name.”

“What does he look like?”

She described someone in his forties, medium height, dark jacket, gray baseball cap.

I frowned.

“Is he a parent?”

“We don't think so.”

“Why haven't you asked him to leave?”

“We have. out.”

Ryan looked across the street.

“Does Travis know?”

“No.”

“Tell him.”

“I will.”

Travis arrived ten minutes later.

Ryan explained what the teacher had said.

Travis's expression became unreadable.

“How long?”

“The teacher said several hardened.

“Why didn't you tell us?”

“Because I didn't think it mattered.”

“You thought someone repeatedly watching you didn't matter?”

Travis sighed.

“He could have been waiting for someone.”

“Or?”

“Or not.”

Ryan stepped closer.

“That's not good enough.”

Travis looked at him.

“I agree.”

The old tension returned for a moment, but it wasn't jealousy this time.

It was concern.

We decided to speak with the school the next morning.

That night, Ryan checked the locks twice.

I noticed.

He noticed me noticing.

“I know,” he said.

“You're worried.”

“Yes.”

“About Travis?”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“About Emma.”

I nodded.

That was different.

The next morning, Travis didn't ride his motorcycle to school.

He drove an old pickup instead.

Ryan noticed.

“You think he's following you?”

“I don't know.”

“Then why change vehicles?”

“Because if someone is watching, I'd rather not make it easy for them to predict where I am.”

Ryan nodded.

The four of us—me, Ryan, Travis, and the school principal—met briefly before classes began.

The principal had already instructed staff to document the man's presence.

He showed us a photograph taken from the school's security camera.

It was blurry.

But the figure was unmistakable.

The same gray cap.

The same dark jacket.

He stood across the street, facing the school.

Not the entrance.

Not the children.

The parking area.

And specifically, the place where Travis usually waited.

Ryan stared at the image.

“Can you zoom in?”

The principal shook his head.

“We've tried.”

Travis leaned closer.

Then he went completely still.

“What?”

He pointed at the photograph.

“That's not the same jacket.”

I looked at him.

“What?”

“Look at the shoulder.”

We leaned closer.

The image was poor, but there was a small light-colored mark near the left shoulder.

Travis shook his head.

“The other man had a tear there.”

Ryan looked at him.

“You're saying there are two?”

“I think so.”

The principal frowned.

“That's concerning.”

I felt my palms grow cold.

“One person watching Travis might be explainable.”

Travis nodded.

“Two isn't.”

The principal immediately increased security around dismissal.

That afternoon, Ryan insisted on picking Emma up himself.

Travis stayed several yards away.

Everything seemed normal.

Until Emma came out.

She wasn't smiling.

She walked directly to me.

“Mommy?”

“What happened?”

She looked toward the parking lot.

“There was a man.”

My heart stopped.

“What man?”

“The one with the gray hat.”

Ryan immediately crouched beside her.

“Did he talk to you?”

“No.”

“Did he come close?”

“No.”

“Then how did you notice him?”

Emma pointed.

“He was looking at Travis.”

Travis turned.

The man was gone.

For several seconds, none of us moved.

Then Emma said something quietly.

“I saw him yesterday too.”

I looked at Travis.

His expression had changed.

“Emma,” he said gently, “did he ever wave at you?”

She shook her head.

“Did he ever say your name?”

“No.”

“Did you tell anyone?”

“I told my teacher.”

The teacher confirmed it.

She had mentioned the man because Emma had noticed him.

Ryan stood.

“We're going home.”

But as we walked toward the car, Travis stopped.

“Wait.”

He pointed toward the far end of the street.

A gray sedan was parked there.

Its engine was running.

Then it pulled away.

Travis watched it disappear.

Ryan looked at him.

“Do you recognize the car?”

“No.”

“Can you remember the plate?”

“Part of it.”

He recited three letters and two numbers.

I wrote them down.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

I opened it.

There was no text.

Only a photograph.

My breath caught.

It was a picture of our house.

Taken from across the street.

The image showed our front porch.

Our windows.

Our driveway.

And Travis's motorcycle parked beside the curb.

The photograph had been taken that afternoon.

I looked up.

Ryan was watching my face.

“What is it?”

I couldn't answer immediately.

Then I handed him the phone.

His expression drained.

Travis looked over his shoulder.

The three of us stared at the photograph.

For the first time, this wasn't about jealousy.

It wasn't about trust.

Someone had been watching our family.

And now that person had decided to let us know.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Photograph on
