Evening light stretched across the parking lot, turning the windows orange. Beneath the intimidating appearance, he was cautious. When he didn't know something, he rarely pretended otherwise.

The principal arrived carrying a folder.

“We've reviewed the records from the last month.”

He placed them on the table.

“There were five changes involving Emma's pickup.”

I looked at the pages.

The first was when Travis was added.

The second was when Ryan temporarily removed him.

The third was when Melissa was added.

The fourth was when Ryan resumed picking Emma up.

The fifth was the day of the school incident.

The officer pointed to the fifth entry.

“Who submitted this?”

The principal checked.

“An administrative account.”

“Whose?”

He frowned.

“That shouldn't be possible.”

“Why?”

“Because this account is normally used for emergency updates. noticed.

“You don't believe she did it.”

“I don't know.”

Neither did he.

We left the school after nine.

On the drive home, neither of us spoke.

When we reached our street, Travis was already outside.

He had gone to check the house.

He walked toward us.

“The police should see this.”

He held up a small plastic bag.

Inside was a torn piece of paper.

“Where did you find it?”

“Behind the mailbox.”

The know?”

“Because that's the time she normally leaves school.”

I felt sick.

Someone had been recording our daughter's schedule.

The officer photographed the paper.

Then he looked toward the house.

“Everyone inside.”

We followed.

Emma was staying with my mother that night.

For the first time since this began, I was grateful she wasn't home.

The officer reviewed the security footage from our neighbor's camera.

At 6:14 p.m., a figure approached our mailbox.

The face was hidden.

But the clothing was visible.

Dark jacket.

Gray cap.

The same person from the school.

Then the figure turned toward the house.

He paused.

And looked directly at the camera.

It felt deliberate.

He knew he was being recorded.

The officer rewound the footage.

“Look at the hand.”

The man lifted one hand toward the camera.

There was something around his wrist.

A black band.

With a silver triangle.

The same symbol as the keychain.

Travis stared.

“That belongs to Mark.”

“How do you know?”

“He used to wear one.”

Ryan looked at him.

“Then we know it's him.”

“Maybe,” the officer said.

“Maybe?”

“The footage doesn't identify his face.”

“But the symbol—”

“Could be copied.”

He was right.

Still, I felt as though we were finally getting somewhere.

Then the officer received a call.

He stepped aside.

When he returned, his expression had changed.

“Derek has been attacked.”

My blood he?”

“Hospital.”

Travis closed his eyes.

The officer continued.

“He says the attacker never spoke.”

“Mark?”

“He can't identify him.”

Ryan looked at me.

“Someone wanted him quiet.”

The officer nodded.

“And that means the records matter.”

I looked at Travis.

“What happens now?”

“We secure the documents.”

“They're already with you.”

“I mean all copies.”

Travis looked at the officer.

“There may be another.”

“What?”

He turned toward us.

“The original ledger.”

I stared at him.

“You never mentioned an original.”

“Because I forgot about it.”

“How do you forget something that could explain all of this?”

He looked ashamed.

“Because I thought it was gone.”

“Where was it?”

“In the rehearsal building.”

The officer's expression hardened.

“Is it still there?”

“I don't know.”

The police immediately made plans to search the building.

But before we could leave, my phone buzzed.

A message.

No photograph this time.

Just four words.

YOU'RE LOOKING IN THE WRONG PLACE.

I showed the officer.

Then another message arrived.

CHECK WHO SIGNS EMMA OUT.

Everyone in the room went silent.

The officer looked at me.

“Do not respond.”

I nodded.

He stared at the message for several seconds.

Then he asked the principal to send him every dismissal record from the last two months.

The principal agreed.

And as he walked away, I realized something.

The person behind this didn't merely know when Emma left school.

They knew exactly how we were trying to find them.

They were watching the investigation.

Which meant they weren't far away.

They were close enough to see our next move.

Click
