She asked whether I would meet her somewhere away from the café because she was afraid Gavin might hear the conversation.

I looked at Otis.

He was asleep beneath the kitchen table, one ear folded over his face.

“Well,” I said, “apparently we're not finished with this.”

He did not move.

I texted Nora back and suggested a small park near the library. She agreed to meet at ten.

The morning passed slowly.

I tried to occupy myself with ordinary things. Laundry. Dishes. Sorting the mail that had accumulated beside the telephone. None of it worked. My mind kept returning to Nora's message.

I had assumed the café incident was finished.

Gavin had apologized.

He had changed the sign.

Victoria had ended their engagement.

Steven had withdrawn his investment.

Those seemed like consequences enough.

But Nora's message suggested that what I had seen that afternoon was only one piece of something larger.

At ten, I arrived at the park with Otis.

Nora was already sitting on a bench.

She looked nervous.

When she saw me, she stood.

“Thank you for coming.”

“Of course.”

She looked at Otis.

“Can I?”

I nodded.

She knelt and let him sniff her hand.

His tail moved.

“He remembers you.”

“I hope so.”

We sat.

For several seconds, Nora watched children playing near the fountain.

Then she said, “I quit.”

I looked at her.

“When?”

“Yesterday.”

“After I left?”

“Yes.”

“How did Gavin react?”

“He wasn't angry.”

That surprised me.

“He just looked tired.”

Nora folded her hands.

“He asked why.”

“What did you tell him?”

“That I had been afraid of him for a long time.”

She swallowed.

“And that I didn't want to work somewhere I had to be afraid of telling the truth.”

I nodded.

“What happened then?”

“He said he understood.”

“That doesn't sound like Gavin.”

“I know.”

She gave a small, uncertain smile.

“Maybe something actually got through to him.”

“Maybe.”

“But that's not why I asked you to meet.”

I waited.

Nora reached into her handbag.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this in the office.”

She held it toward me.

I didn't take it.

“What is it?”

“I don't know exactly.”

“Then why give it to me?”

“Because your name is on it.”

My stomach tightened.

“What?”

She nodded.

“It was in Gavin's desk.”

I took the envelope.

My name was written across the front.

Elaine Mercer.

I stared at it.

The last name stopped me.

“Mercer?”

Nora looked confused.

“I thought that was your last name.”

“It isn't.”

She frowned.

“My last name is Parker.”

Nora's face changed.

“Then why does it say Mercer?”

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a photocopy of an old newspaper article.

I unfolded it carefully.

The photograph showed a younger man standing outside a city building.

I recognized him immediately.

Howard.

My hands began to shake.

Nora leaned closer.

“Do you know him?”

“Yes.”

“My husband.”

She looked at the article.

“What does it say?”

I read the headline.

A CITY INSPECTOR RESIGNS AFTER DISPUTE OVER LOCAL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT.

I stopped.

Howard had never told me about it.

I had known that he had once worked with city development projects, but I had never heard about a resignation.

I read the article.

The details were vague.

There had been disagreement over a commercial redevelopment project.

Several permits had been questioned.

A business owner had complained that Howard had delayed approvals.

The business owner was identified as Gavin Mercer's father.

I looked at Nora.

“This doesn't make sense.”

“What?”

“Howard never worked against anyone because of personal reasons.”

She pointed to the article.

“There was a dispute.”

“Yes.”

“Could it have been this?”

“I don't know.”

I folded the paper.

“What else was in the envelope?”

“Nothing.”

“Where did you find it?”

“In a locked drawer.”

My eyes narrowed.

“You opened a locked drawer?”

“No.”

“Then how?”

“Gavin opened it yesterday.”

I looked at her.

“He showed you?”

“No. I was helping him clean the office.”

She lowered her voice.

“He told me he was finally going through old records.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

I looked at the article again.

There was something unsettling about seeing Howard's name in a place I had never known existed.

For forty-six years, I had believed I knew the important parts of his life.

Apparently I didn't.

Nora touched my arm.

“Are you okay?”

“I don't know.”

She nodded.

“I thought you should have it.”

“Why?”

“Because Gavin said something strange.”

“What?”

“He said he finally understood why your husband never talked about the café.”

I stared at her.

“What café?”

Nora shook her head.

“I don't know.”

I stood.

Otis immediately lifted his head.

“Come on, sweetheart.”

Nora looked worried.

“Where are you going?”

“To see Gavin.”

She caught my wrist.

“Elaine.”

I stopped.

“What?”

“I don't think he wants to hurt you.”

“I don't think so either.”

“Then why are you going?”

I looked at the article.

“Because I think my husband left a piece of his life somewhere I never knew to look.”

The café was only a fifteen-minute drive away.

When I arrived, the sign outside had changed.

DOGS WELCOME.

NO MINIMUM. NO EXCEPTIONS.

The words looked different now.

Less like advertising.

More like a promise someone was trying to keep.

I walked inside.

Gavin was alone.

He looked up.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he said, “I wondered when you would come.”

I stopped.

“You knew?”

“I knew Nora would tell you eventually.”

“About Howard?”

He nodded.

“Sit.”

“I'd rather stand.”

He accepted that.

“I owe you an explanation.”

“Yes.”

He rubbed his hands together.

“My father owned a construction company.”

“I know.”

“He wanted to buy the property where my café now stands.”

I said nothing.

“He couldn't get the permits.”

“Because of Howard?”

“Partly.”

“Was Howard corrupt?”

“No.”

The answer came immediately.

That mattered.

“Then why did he resign?”

Gavin looked toward the window.

“Because my father accused him of taking money.”

My breath caught.

“Did he?”

“No.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I found the records.”

He walked toward a cabinet.

“I spent years believing my father.”

He opened a drawer.

“I thought your husband had ruined his business.”

He pulled out a folder.

“But last month, I found documents that showed my father had lied.”

I took the folder.

Inside were copies of permits, inspection reports, and letters.

Howard's signature appeared repeatedly.

Everything was professional.

Careful.

Methodical.

There was no evidence of wrongdoing.

“What happened to your father?”

“He died seven years ago.”

“And you kept these?”

“I didn't know what they meant.”

Gavin sat down.

“I only understood after Steven told me he was reviewing the café.”

I looked at him.

“What does Steven have to do with this?”

“His company owns several properties in the area.”

I knew that.

“But there was another connection.”

He paused.

“My father borrowed money from Steven's company years ago.”

“For the redevelopment?”

“Yes.”

“And Howard stopped it?”

“He stopped an illegal section of it.”

I stared at him.

“What section?”

“A building plan that would have displaced several small businesses.”

I remembered Howard coming home late during those years.

I remembered him saying he was tired.

I remembered asking whether something was wrong.

He had kissed my forehead and said, “Nothing I can't handle.”

I had believed him.

Gavin looked at me.

“He protected people.”

I looked down at the folder.

“Why didn't he tell me?”

“Maybe because he knew you worried.”

“That sounds like him.”

Gavin nodded.

“He also refused a bribe.”

I looked up.

“How much?”

Gavin named the amount.

It was more money than I had ever seen in one place.

I closed my eyes.

Howard had never told me.

He had simply gone to work every morning.

He had come home every evening.

He had eaten dinner.

He had kissed me goodnight.

And he had carried an entire battle in silence.

I sat down.

Otis rested his chin on my knee.

Gavin looked at him.

“I was cruel to him without even knowing it.”

“You were cruel to me.”

“I know.”

He swallowed.

“I think I was trying to punish the wrong person.”

I studied him.

“Why did you keep the documents?”

“Because I thought someday I'd need to know the truth.”

“And now?”

“Now I think you deserve it.”

I looked around the café.

“How does this connect to Steven?”

Gavin's expression changed.

“He knows more than I do.”

“About Howard?”

“Yes.”

“Then why hasn't he told me?”

“I don't know.”

I stood.

“Then I'm going to ask him.”

Gavin nodded.

“I expected you would.”

As I reached the door, he called after me.

“Elaine.”

I turned.

“I really am sorry.”

I believed him.

This time, I did.

But forgiveness was not the same as forgetting.

I walked to my car with Otis beside me.

Before I opened the door, my phone rang.

Steven.

I answered.

“Hello?”

His voice was quiet.

“Elaine, we need to talk.”

I looked at the folder in my hand.

“Yes.”

“Not about Gavin.”

“Then about what?”

There was a long pause.

“About Howard.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 6:
