7 – The Letter Howard Left Behind Told Me to Look Somewhere I Had Never Thought to Look, and Otis Led Me There First

I did not sleep.

At four in the morning, I was still sitting at the kitchen table with Howard's letter in front of me.

Otis had fallen asleep with his head against my thigh.

The sentence would not leave my mind.

If they tell you Richard is finished, don't believe them.

I had never heard the name before Steven mentioned it.

Now it appeared in my husband's handwriting.

I read the rest of the letter.

There wasn't much.

Howard wrote that he loved me.

That he was sorry for the secrets.

That he had trusted the wrong people at times.

Then he wrote something strange.

The evidence is not where they expect it to be.

I stared at the sentence.

What evidence?

He had not explained.

Instead, he wrote:

Look at the things I refused to throw away.

I almost laughed.

Howard had refused to throw away everything.

Receipts.

Old tools.

Broken radios.

Instruction manuals.

Keys to buildings that no longer existed.

He had once kept a cardboard box containing twelve dead batteries because he believed he might someday find a use for them.

I knew exactly how impossible this search could become.

I looked at Otis.

“You're no help.”

His tail moved.

Morning came.

I started with the garage.

Howard's workbench remained mostly untouched.

I had cleaned around it after his funeral, but I had never reorganized it.

There were old inspection helmets.

A toolbox.

A cracked measuring device.

Several notebooks.

I opened each one.

Most contained ordinary measurements.

Dates.

Addresses.

Names.

Then I found a notebook with a blue cover.

The first pages were empty.

The middle pages contained sketches of drainage lines and property boundaries.

I recognized the café property.

I turned the page.

There was a hand-drawn circle around an area behind the building.

Beside it, Howard had written:

Not on official plan.

My heart began beating faster.

I called Steven.

He answered on the second ring.

“Elaine?”

“I found something.”

“What?”

“Howard's notebook.”

“What does it say?”

I told him.

There was silence.

“Send me a photograph.”

I did.

A minute later, he called back.

“That area was never supposed to be developed.”

“Why?”

“It was part of the drainage corridor.”

“What does that mean?”

“If the construction had continued, several properties could have flooded.”

I looked at the notebook.

“Why would Richard want it?”

“Because building over it increased the usable commercial space.”

“So the illegal plan was larger than we thought.”

“Yes.”

I sat on the garage floor.

“Howard knew.”

“He did.”

“Then why did he write that the evidence wasn't where they expected?”

“I don't know.”

I looked around.

“Maybe he hid something here.”

Steven paused.

“Maybe.”

I searched for another hour.

Nothing.

Then Otis began scratching at a cardboard box.

I looked at him.

“What?”

He scratched again.

I pulled the box toward me.

Inside were old shoes.

A broken umbrella.

A set of Christmas lights.

Three notebooks.

I opened the notebooks.

Nothing.

Then I noticed a false bottom.

My hands froze.

Howard had built it himself.

Inside was a small key.

Attached to it was a paper tag.

The word CAFÉ was written on it.

I stared at it.

Then I laughed softly.

“You really did leave me a treasure hunt.”

Steven arrived forty minutes later.

He examined the key.

“It could be old.”

“It has the café name on it.”

“Does it fit anything?”

“I don't know.”

We drove to the café.

Gavin was there.

When he saw the key, his face changed.

“I've seen that.”

“Where?”

“In my father's records.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“I didn't know what it opened.”

He took us into the office.

The room smelled of paper and coffee.

Gavin opened a cabinet.

“There was a storage room behind the kitchen.”

“Is it still there?”

“Yes.”

We walked through a narrow hallway.

Gavin unlocked a door.

Inside were shelves stacked with boxes.

At the back was a metal cabinet.

He tried the key.

It turned.

The lock opened.

Inside were files.

Old photographs.

Receipts.

A ledger.

And a small cassette tape.

I stared at it.

“Does anyone still play these?”

Gavin looked embarrassed.

“I have an old recorder.”

He found it.

We inserted the tape.

Static filled the room.

Then Howard's voice.

My knees almost gave out.

“Elaine?”

I whispered his name.

Steven stood behind me.

The recording continued.

“If you're hearing this, I didn't know whether I'd have the chance to explain.”

I covered my mouth.

Howard's voice was older than I remembered.

Tired.

But unmistakably his.

He described the development project.

He described the falsified reports.

He named Richard.

Then he said something that made Gavin sit down.

“Richard believes the café property contains documents proving what he did.”

I looked at Gavin.

“What documents?”

Howard continued.

“I moved the originals before they could be destroyed.”

My heart raced.

“Where?” Gavin whispered.

The recording answered.

“Not at the city office.”

A pause.

“Not at my house.”

Another pause.

“I placed them where no one would think to look.”

The tape crackled.

Then Howard said:

“The café.”

Gavin stared at the walls.

I did too.

Howard continued.

“Richard believes the evidence was destroyed. Let him believe it.”

The recording ended.

No one moved.

Finally, Gavin said, “My father knew.”

“Yes,” Steven said.

“And he kept the evidence here?”

“Apparently.”

Gavin looked sick.

“What happens if Richard finds it?”

Steven answered.

“He won't.”

“How do you know?”

“Because we're going to find it first.”

We searched every room.

Behind cabinets.

Under floorboards.

Inside storage closets.

Nothing.

Then I remembered Howard's words.

Where no one would think to look.

I looked at the café sign through the window.

DOGS WELCOME.

I walked outside.

Gavin followed.

“What are you thinking?”

I looked at the building.

“The sign.”

“What about it?”

“Howard knew people would search the office.”

“Yes.”

“So where would he hide something?”

Gavin shook his head.

“I don't know.”

I looked down at Otis.

He was sniffing around the base of the sign.

Then he stopped.

His nose pressed against the wooden post.

I crouched.

There was a loose section near the bottom.

I touched it.

It moved.

Gavin stared.

“You've got to be kidding.”

I pulled it open.

Inside was a narrow metal tube.

Steven came outside.

He saw it.

“Don't touch it yet.”

I froze.

He put on gloves from his car.

Then he removed the tube.

Inside were several rolled documents.

The originals.

Howard's evidence.

For a moment, none of us spoke.

Gavin began to cry.

Quietly.

He turned away.

“My father knew.”

“Yes,” Steven said.

“He knew all these years.”

“Yes.”

Gavin wiped his face.

“I hated the wrong man.”

I looked at the documents.

“So did I.”

“What do you mean?”

“I hated myself for not knowing.”

Steven shook his head.

“Don't.”

I looked at him.

“He made the choice to protect you.”

“That doesn't make it fair.”

“No.”

“It doesn't make it right.”

“No.”

“But it was his choice.”

I nodded.

The documents were real.

They contained signatures, dates, altered reports, payment records, and correspondence.

Enough to establish what had happened.

Enough to expose Richard.

Enough to explain why Howard had remained silent.

Then Gavin noticed one document.

He picked it up.

“What is this?”

I read it.

It was dated only two years earlier.

Richard had purchased an interest in another property nearby.

My blood went cold.

Steven took the paper.

“He's still working.”

Gavin looked at him.

“How?”

“Through shell companies.”

“Why?”

Steven pointed toward the address.

It was the same neighborhood.

The same drainage corridor.

Richard had returned.

And he was trying to finish what he had started.

That evening, we took the documents to an attorney Steven trusted.

The attorney confirmed their significance.

But he also warned us.

“Evidence this old needs careful authentication.”

Steven nodded.

“We'll do it properly.”

I looked at the documents.

“What happens to the café?”

The attorney looked at Gavin.

“That depends on the property.”

Gavin swallowed.

“What do you mean?”

“The lease may be invalid if the original development agreement was fraudulent.”

Gavin closed his eyes.

After everything, the café itself might disappear.

I looked at him.

“Maybe that's what you need to face.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

I didn't feel satisfaction.

Only sadness.

Because places hold memories.

Even bad ones.

The café had become a place where I was humiliated.

But it had also become the place where the truth finally surfaced.

As we left the attorney's office, Steven stopped me.

“There is one more problem.”

“What?”

“Richard knows the documents survived.”

I stared at him.

“How?”

“The recorder.”

My stomach dropped.

“He could have known about the room.”

Steven nodded.

“And if he knows we found the evidence…”

He didn't finish.

He didn't have to.

That night, I returned home with Otis.

Before I went inside, I noticed something on the porch.

An envelope.

No name.

No return address.

Inside was a single photograph.

Howard standing outside the café years earlier.

On the back, someone had written:

You should have left the past buried.

I held the photograph so tightly that it bent.

Otis growled.

For the first time since this began, I was afraid.

Not for myself.

For him.
