The café seemed strangely small with all three of us standing there, listening to the refrigerator hum behind the counter. Outside, the black sedan was already gone. Steven had told us to leave, but Gavin looked toward the locked front door and shook his head. “If I walk out now, I'm letting him decide where I go.” His voice was unsteady, but there was something new beneath it. It sounded less like fear and more like resolve.

Steven called again. This time Gavin answered. “We're still inside.” Steven's response came immediately. “Then stay there. I've contacted the attorney and the police. Do not touch anything else.” Gavin glanced at me. “We found the ledger.” “I know,” Steven said. “And that's exactly why you need to be careful.” Gavin's hand tightened around the phone. “He threatened us.” There was a pause. “I heard.” Steven's voice became quieter. “Richard has spent years protecting himself. Don't give him an opportunity to turn this into something else.”

We waited nearly twenty minutes before Steven returned. He came through the back entrance with Victoria beside him. She hurried to me first, checking my face and then looking at Otis. “Are you all right?” “I'm frightened,” I admitted. Saying it aloud felt strangely relieving. Victoria nodded. “So am I.” Gavin stood behind the counter, still holding his phone. He looked at her, and something passed between them that I couldn't quite read. Their engagement was over, but their concern for each other hadn't disappeared simply because the relationship had.

The attorney arrived shortly afterward. He carried a slim briefcase and wore the same expression he had worn when we first brought him the documents: calm, careful, unwilling to promise more than the evidence could support. He examined the threatening message and the photograph, then reviewed the ledger. “This is no longer merely an old property dispute,” he said. “The threat creates a separate issue.” Gavin asked whether Richard could be arrested immediately. The attorney shook his head. “A threat is evidence, but we need to establish who made the call and connect it properly.”

Gavin looked frustrated. “So we just wait?” “No,” the attorney said. “We document everything. Every call. Every message. Every vehicle. Every conversation. We don't confront him.” Gavin looked toward the window. “He already knows where we are.” “Then we make sure he knows we're not going to panic.” The attorney turned toward me. “And you should not return home alone tonight.” I nodded. I was tired of being told to be careful, but this time I understood why.

That evening, I stayed at Steven's guesthouse again. Victoria brought Otis a blanket and made tea for me. We sat outside beneath a small covered porch while Steven spoke quietly with the attorney inside. Victoria looked toward the dark garden. “I keep thinking about Gavin.” “Why?” “Because I don't know what happens to him now.” I thought about the café owner I had met weeks earlier, the man who had insulted my dog and then watched his carefully built world collapse. “Maybe what happens next depends on what he chooses.”

Victoria looked at me. “Do you think people can really change?” “Sometimes.” I touched Otis's head. “But change isn't a speech. It's what someone does when nobody is watching.” She smiled faintly. “Dad said something similar.” “Your father seems to say very little unless he means it.” She laughed. “That's true.” Then her expression became serious. “I don't want Gavin to become another victim of his father's choices.” I understood. “Then don't let his father choose for him.”

The following morning, Gavin arrived early. He had barely slept. He carried a cardboard box containing photographs, tax records, and old business papers from his father's estate. “I found these at home,” he said. “I went through everything last night.” Steven frowned. “You should have waited.” “I know.” Gavin placed the box on the table. “But there was something I needed to know.” He removed an old photograph. It showed his father beside Richard outside the original development site. Behind them stood several men in suits.

Gavin turned the photograph over. On the back was a date. “This was taken three weeks before Howard refused to approve the project.” He handed it to me. I studied the younger faces. Howard wasn't in the photograph, but I recognized the building behind them. “Where is this?” I asked. Gavin answered, “The old warehouse.” Steven looked at the picture more closely. “That's not just a warehouse.” He pointed toward a vehicle parked in the distance. “That's a city inspection truck.” My heart tightened. Howard had been there.

We returned to the warehouse with the attorney and two officers. The building looked even more abandoned than before. Dust covered the windowsills, and weeds had grown through cracks in the concrete. We searched the office area again, this time following the photograph carefully. Behind an old shelving unit, we found a rusted metal plate attached to the wall. Gavin removed it. Behind it was a narrow compartment containing a bundle of papers wrapped in plastic.

The papers were mostly copies, but one was different. It was a handwritten statement signed by Howard. I recognized his handwriting immediately. He had documented a meeting with Richard and Gavin's father. According to the statement, Richard had offered him money to approve the project. Howard had refused. He had also written that another city employee was present and had witnessed the exchange. The witness's name stopped me cold.

It was Steven.

I looked at him.

“You were there?”

He nodded.

“I was.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Howard asked me to wait until the evidence could be protected.”

“You could have told me after he died.”

“Yes.”

The answer came without defense.

“I should have.”

I looked away.

For years I had thought grief was the hardest thing I would ever carry. Now I understood that unanswered questions had their own weight.

The attorney read the statement carefully. “This is important.” Steven nodded. “It establishes that Howard reported the attempted bribe at the time.” Gavin stared at the paper. “My father knew.” “Yes,” Steven said. “And he kept the secret.” Gavin's eyes filled. “Why?” The attorney answered before Steven could. “Fear, loyalty, money, shame. There are many reasons people protect the wrong person.” Gavin looked at the statement again. “I spent my whole life thinking my father was the victim.”

I placed my hand on his shoulder.

“You were a child.”

He looked at me.

“That doesn't excuse everything I've done.”

“No.”

“But it explains where some of it came from.”

“Yes.”

He nodded slowly.

“I need to tell Victoria.”

“She already knows enough,” I said.

“No. I need to tell her what I've found.”

That afternoon, Gavin met Victoria privately. I stayed with Steven while they talked. Nearly an hour passed before Victoria came outside. Her eyes were red, but her expression was steady.

“He told me everything.”

I nodded.

“What are you going to do?”

She looked back through the window.

“I don't know about us.”

“That is fair.”

“But I know one thing.”

“What?”

“I won't help him lie.”

I smiled.

“Then you already know what matters.”

Steven joined us.
