answer.

I looked at my father.

“According to Stephen?”

Patricia's husband had gone very still.

He was standing near the rear van.

He looked the documents say.”

I opened the binder.

“Stephen wrote that I was impulsive, financially irresponsible, and incapable of making independent decisions.”

I house.

“Every time I disagreed, I was called unstable.”

I looked at my parents.

“Every time I asked why I wasn't invited, I was told I was too sensitive.”

I looked at Lauren.

“Every time I defended myself, I was told I ruined things.”

Then I looked at Patricia.

“And every time Grandma tried to protect me, you told everyone she was confused.”

Nobody spoke.

Sheriff Callahan remained beside me.

At that moment, a car pulled into the driveway.

Mr. Vance stepped out.

He carried a thin envelope.

He walked toward the porch.

“Nora.”

I stepped down one stair.

“What is it?”

“Your grandmother's final letter.”

Patricia immediately moved forward.

“Why does she get everything?”

Mr. Vance looked at her.

“Because Ruth chose her.”

He handed me the envelope.

My name was written across it.

My fingers shook.

I opened it.

Inside was a single sheet.

I read the first line.

Then I stopped.

I had to sit.

Grandma had written:

Nora, if twenty-three people arrive together, they are not here because they suddenly remembered how much they love you.

I looked up.

Every person in the driveway was watching.

I continued.

They are here because they believe the house is still theirs.

They may tell you I promised them access.

They may tell you family history gives them rights.

They may tell you you are cruel.

Let them speak.

Do not confuse noise with truth.

My eyes burned.

I read the next paragraph.

The house is not the reason I am giving you this property.

It is the place where I want you to learn that your life belongs to you.

I lowered the letter.

Patricia whispered:

“This is absurd.”

I kept reading.

There are financial records in the blue binder.

There are court records.

There are copies of documents your father and others hoped you would never see.

I did not tell you because I wanted you to grow without living every day afraid of what they might do.

But I made copies.

I preserved dates.

I kept signatures.

If they challenge you, you will not have to rely on memory.

You will have evidence.

My father closed his eyes.

Patricia stepped backward.

I reached the final paragraph.

And there was one line that made everything inside me go still.

You were never the difficult one, Nora.

You were the one they needed to believe was difficult.

I folded the letter.

For fifteen years, I had wondered what was wrong with me.

Grandma had just answered.

Nothing.

The answer was nothing.

I looked at my family.

“No one is coming inside.”

Patricia shook her head.

“You can't do this.”

“I can.”

“Where are we supposed to go?”

I glanced at the four vans.

“There are hotels in town.”

“It is Christmas.”

“Yes.”

“You would really send your own family away?”

I looked at my mother.

Then my father.

Then Lauren.

Finally Patricia.

“You spent fifteen years teaching me that family doesn't require an invitation.”

I held up the letter.

“I'm finally listening.”

Nobody moved.

The ocean thundered below the bluff.

Wind pushed snow across the driveway.

A child began crying inside one of the vans.

The adults looked at one another.

For the first time, they seemed to understand that there would be no negotiation.

Then my father noticed the blue binder.

His face changed.

Not anger.

Fear.

“What else is in there?”

I looked at him.

“I don't know yet.”

He swallowed.

“Give it to me.”

“No.”

“Nora, you don't understand.”

“I think I'm beginning to.”

He took one step toward the porch.

Sheriff Callahan raised a hand.

“Stay where you are.”

My father stopped.

Patricia stared at him.

“What is in that binder?”

He didn't answer.

I looked down at the cover.

Grandma had known.

Mr. Vance had known.

My father was afraid of it.

That meant the guardianship petition was only part of the story.

I opened the binder again.

Behind the court documents was a bank statement.

Behind that was a transfer record.

Behind that was a photocopy of an old account I had never seen.

The account had been opened when I was seventeen.

The beneficiary was me.

The account balance was almost zero.

But the transaction history showed something else.

Large deposits.

Withdrawals.

Transfers.

Names I recognized.

Dates I remembered.

The first withdrawal had occurred three weeks after the guardianship petition.

I looked at my father.

“You took money from my account.”

His face went pale.

Patricia whispered:

“Oh, God.”

I turned another page.

There were more withdrawals.

More signatures.

More evidence.

The beach house suddenly seemed very small.

The family gathered outside it no longer looked like guests arriving for Christmas.

They looked like witnesses who had accidentally walked into the opening scene of a case they had never expected me to investigate.

I closed the binder.

“Everyone needs to leave.”

My father stared at me.

“What are you going to do?”

I looked toward the ocean.

Then back at him.

“For once?”

I tightened my grip on Grandma's letter.

“I'm going to find out everything.”

Click here to continue reading: PART 5: The account Grandma had hidden exposed a trail of withdrawals
