explain.”

He couldn't.

That night, I learned that the beach house had been listed as a potential asset in negotiations with a lender months before Grandma died.

The listing had never been completed because Grandma had transferred the property into the trust.

She had moved it beyond my father's reach.

That was why the inheritance mattered.

Not because it was valuable.

Because it was unavailable.

Grandma had taken the one asset they believed they could eventually control and placed it directly in my hands.

I sat in the study after everyone left.

I opened the red notebook.

A page near the end contained another entry.

“David believes the house will solve the word:

“Pressure.”

My father's name had the largest amount beside it.

Patricia's had another.

Stephen's was smaller.

Lauren's name when she was nineteen.

It was not a withdrawal.

It was a deposit.

I stared.

Maybe she had received money.

Maybe she had been told it was legitimate.

Maybe she had known nothing.

I refused to assume.

That mattered.

My phone rang.

Lauren.

I excuse.

She whispered, “I'm sorry.”

I did not say it was okay.

Because it wasn't.

But I told her, “Thank you for telling
